PROGRAM & CAREER INFORMATIONCareer DescriptionPrepare for one of the hottest jobs around. Learn to diagnose, repair, and performmaintenance on automobiles and light trucks. As an Automotive Technician, you will need theskills to accurately diagnose and demonstrate quality workmanship. If you have an interest ina particular area, larger repair shops often employ specialized mechanics. Areas ofspecialization include air conditioning, drivability/emissions, steering & suspension, electrical,transmission and heavy-line mechanics. You can find employment in car dealerships,independent garages, private companies, government agencies, or you can choose selfemployment.How to Get StartedGateWay’s Automotive Technology program partners withtwo auto makers to produce highly trained and qualifiedtechnicians through Toyota’s Toyota Technical EducationNetwork (T-TEN) and Honda’s Professional AutomotiveCareer Training (PACT). GateWay offers five certificatesand one degree program. Each of these certificatessignifies to a potential or present employer that you arequalified for an entry-level position as a general orspecialized mechanic. Our Associate in Applied ScienceDegree may include paid work experience at a localdealership or independent repair facility.Employment OutlookIn Arizona, job openings for Automotive Technicians areexpected to increase 10% over 10 years, creatingapproximately 840 jobs annually. DEALER-BASED INTERNSHIPSToyota T-TEN Internship Information& RequirementsThe Toyota Technical Education Network (T-Ten) is a twoyear automotive program designed to upgrade thetechnical competency and professional level of theincoming dealership technician. The curriculum is designedby Toyota and GateWay Community College (GWCC)and leads to an Associate of Applied Science Degree inAutomotive Service Technology or certificate. The programinvolves not only attending classroom lecture andlaboratory on Toyota products at GWCC, but also requiresthe student to work at a Toyota dealership.The total program lasts two years with approximately 32 weeks spent at GateWay CommunityCollege and approximately 32-44 weeks at a Toyota dealership. Each semester consists of rotating 8weeks class at GateWay (8:00 am - 3:00 pm) and 8 weeks paid work experience opportunities at aToyota Dealer.Since considerable time is spent at the dealership, it is a requirement of the program for thestudent to have a sponsoring Toyota dealer. The student will receive assistance in location andidentification of participating Toyota dealerships. DEALER-BASED INTERNSHIPSHonda PACT Internship Information& RequirementsAt PACT schools like GateWay, students are taught by ASEcertified instructors who are also Honda certified. Eachschool is equipped with the special tools and equipmentrequired in every dealer, as well as the training materialfound in the Training Centers. The curriculum conforms toNATEF’s stringent guidelines as well as meets the needs ofthe local dealerships and community.Students in the PACT programs have the opportunity to work at local dealerships to gain real worldexperience. Students will also get to work with the specialized tools to supplement their own tool set,as well as the opportunity to earn wages while going to school.Students that make the commitment to join the Honda team secure their future in the automotiveindustry and must meet the performance standards set up by the dealership while attending schoolas a full-time student. Students will also need to maintain satisfactory grades and need to have abasic automotive tool set to work from to participate in the program. Each graduating student isrecognized by American Honda for their commitment as a PACT student. Honda PACTcertification is recognized at Honda & Acura dealers nationwide.
