BBOEPage 6Programs and AdvisingHigh School CompletionNeed a High School Diploma? There are 3 programsavailable to students who are at least 17 years of age and areofficially withdrawn from school. All students 17 years ofage must schedule a meeting with the Director prior toentering Adult Education.High School Credit Diploma Program(HSCDP or CDP)In the High School Credit Diploma program students earnacademic credit which are added to any credits they alreadyearned previously in high school. Upon fulfilling all coreand elective requirements, students will receive their highschool diploma. Credit may be given for previously earned highschool credits, military experience, or independentstudy. 22.5 credits are required to receive a Diploma,which is awarded by the Bridgeport PublicSchools. Bridgeport Adult Education requires students toearn: English: 4 credits Social Studies: 3 credits Mathematics: 4 credits Science: 3 credits Electives: 8.5 credits

BBOEPage 7A certified school counselor will review your officialtranscripts and design a program to meet all requirementsnecessary to receive a high school diploma. Credit Diplomaclasses are offered at Central High School in the evening,from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. Each class meets two nights aweek (Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday).Students must accumulate a minimum of 48 hours of seattime in each class to receive credit for a course.Additionally, we offer on-line classes for students usingEdgenuity on Saturday mornings at the Adult LearningCenter from 8:30 A.M.– 12:30 P.M.The Credit Diploma Program is also offered online 5 daysduring the week at the Adult Learning Center. Theseclasses are also provided on the Edgenuity online platform.Bridgeport Adult Education is in compliance withConnecticut General Statutes Sec.10-73a and does not chargefees for registration, textbooks or materials used inmandated program areas.

BBOEPage 8High School Equivalency/General Educational Development (GED )The focus of the GED program is to prepare students topass the computer-based GED test. Preparation to completethe GED test includes problem-solving skills in the subjectareas of Language Arts, Social Studies, Science andMathematics. Classroom instruction is supplemented bycomputer assisted instruction with a GED interactivecomputer program. It is given in both English and Spanish. All students take a placement test to determine theirappropriate class level. Classes are available at all levels. You are eligible to take the official State GED Examif you are 17/18 years of age and officially withdrawnfrom school for at least 6 months or if your class hasgraduated. If you are 17 years old, you must submit awithdrawal form signed by a parent or guardian. Those who pass the GED test are awarded aConnecticut State High School Diploma. Day GED classes are held at the Adult LearningCenter located at 418 Kossuth Street, MondayThursday and evening classes are held at CentralHigh School, Monday-Thursday.

BBOEPage 10National External Diploma Program(NEDP)The National External Diploma Program (NEDP) is a HighSchool diploma program for adults who qualify and haveacquired their academic skills through life and workexperiences and demonstrate what they have learned. NEDPmeasures academic and life skills, such as Reading, CriticalThinking, Oral Communications, Mathematics, Writing, SelfAwareness, Consumer Awareness, Occupational Awareness,Scientific Awareness, and Social Awareness.The NEDP is offered by our educational partners, LiteracyVolunteers of Southeastern Fairfield County in partnershipwith the Bridgeport Public Library, and the MercyLearning Center (a women’s ONLY program). Candidateswork independently while maintaining weeklyappointments with their NEDP advisor/assessor.Diplomas are issued by the Bridgeport Adult EducationDepartment.

BBOEPage 12English for Speakers of Other Languages(ESL)We offer ESL classes to students whose primary language isnot English. Courses range from introductory to advancedlevels and are designed to improve reading, writing,listening, speaking, and life skills. The use of technology isan integral part of our program. Students are given aplacement test to determine ability level. Integrates Life Skills and Basic Skills. Listening, writing, speaking and reading skills aretaught. Weekly interactive computer instruction. Classes are offered in four instructional levels: Survival,Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Students areplaced according to their ability level. A placement testis given to assess students’ level. These courses are designed to strengthen the students’basic math, reading comprehension, and grammar skills.English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) classes areoffered during the day at the Adult Learning Center and inthe evening at Central High School.

BBOEPage 13CitizenshipThis course prepares students for the U.S. Citizenship andImmigration Services (USCIS) exam and interview of U.S.History. Students must be assessed at Intermediate level orhigher. Prepare to become a US Citizen by studying for the USNaturalization Interview and Test. Course covers US History, Government and Civics.Must be able to read, write and speak English to pass thetest.

Advanced Microsoft OfficeHave some experience with Microsoft Office andwant to improve your skills or need a refresher? Thiscourse will help you learn advanced techniques. Youwill learn how to create and update a Table ofContents, Mail Merge to labels, envelopes, formletters, and emails, work with captions and footnotes,track changes, and much more. The basics ofMicrosoft Publisher will also be explored.

BBOEPage 19Bridgeport Adult EducationOnline Credit Diploma Coursesthrough Edgenuity LearningOnline CDP courses are offered at the Adult LearningCenter. This is an ideal option for those students who arecomputer literate and seek to work independently to earncredits at their own pace.In this program, students are monitored by certifiedinstructors. Those enrolled in online courses have the ability,and are encouraged, to continue to work independently athome, or elsewhere, as long as a computer with Internetaccess is available.This is a high demand program and spots are limited, so ifyou think this may be a good fit for you, please speak to aguidance counselor as soon as possible.Summer 2021 Credit Diploma CoursesWe will offer summer credit diploma courses at the AdultLearning Center, 418 Kossuth Street.Classes meet Monday through Friday from 9:00 am – 1:00pm. July 1st, 2021 to July 30th, 2021

BBOEPage 21Adult Education Policies and ProceduresAttendance/TardinessAttendance will be taken daily in class and monitoredclosely by office staff. Students who do not attend for theminimum required hours will not receive credit for thecourse. Students will be marked tardy after 6:45 P.M. Threetardies to any class shall constitute an absence from thatclass. No students will be permitted to enter the buildingafter 6:45 P.M.SecurityAll students must pass through one of the securitycheckpoints at Central High School. Cell phones, jewelry,and other metal items must be removed prior to passingthrough the metal detector. Hats are not allowed, with theexception of head coverings required in religiousobservance. Students may be refused entry for inappropriatedress.Cell phones, other electronic devicesThe use of these during class time is prohibited unless theuse is directed by the teacher and is necessary for a learningactivity.Use of School TelephoneStudents will not be called out of class for incoming calls,except for extreme emergencies.

Clothing should be clean and appropriate for a schoolenvironment.SmokingSmoking of any kind is not permitted on school grounds.Change of Address/TelephonePlease notify the school if you have a change of address ortelephone number.Identification Cards/Bus PassesStudents must wear a school‐issued identification card at alltimes while in attendance.Bus PassesBus passes will be issued to students in good standingaccording to established criteria. Behavior that is in any way disruptive to theeducational process or disrespectful of others may result inremoval from the program.
