In MemoryPamela YipDallas Morning News Personal Finance ColumnistFor the last 16 years, Pamela Mary Yip helped Dallas Morning News readers navigate the obstacles of personal finance. Her columns covered all of life’s economic stages, including planning for college expenses and saving forretirement. And she handled all of the topics with professional care and a personal touch. Pamela was a greatfriend of the FPA of Dallas/Fort Worth and did many things to assist our chapter in the Public Relations area and shewill be truly missed.Born in Hong Kong, Yip was 2 when she emigrated from communist China to California with her parents. The familylived in San Francisco for five years before moving to Sacramento, where Yip grew up. In 1979, she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a concentration in economics from California State University-Sacramento. Later, shereceived a personal financial planning certificate from the University of Houston. Yip worked for United Press International, USA Today and the Houston Chronicle before she joined The News as a business columnist in 1999. Her previous work included covering the 1997 handover of Hong Kong by Great Britain to China. She had been a member ofthe Society of American Business Editors and Writers’ board of governors since 2007. In 2010, Yip was part of a reporting team that won a SABEW award for a series of articles about the high cost of health care. She served as co-chairof the society’s 48th annual national conference in Dallas in 2011.Pamela helped promote the highest standards of business journalism and made lasting friendships with many individuals in the journalism industry, as well as the FPA and financial planning community.Peter Johnson, assistant business editor at The News and Yip’s editor, said she was “a good reporter and an evenbetter person.” “She really loved helping people, and I think that’s what made her such a good personal financereporter,” he said. He noted that Yip’s death came the same day The News conducted its annual financial planninghotline for readers, a service she started about 15 years ago.On Sunday, Thomas E. Murphy, a close friend of Yip’s and a member of the Financial Planning Association, was busyanswering calls and live chat queries from the public as part of the annual hotline. Yip and Murphy met through thehotline, which enlists FPA members to offer pro bono financial advice to callers. Murphy said that Yip was alwayspushing to find new ways to explain financial concepts to her readers and that she “felt very compelled to helppeople understand personal finance.”The Financial Planning Association of Dallas-Fort Worth is honoring Yip by donating the proceeds from its annual honors dinner Thursday in her memory. The money will go to the Pamela Yip Scholarship Fund for CFA students. Memorials may made to the Pamela Yip Fund, FPA DFW, P.O. Box 261750, Plano, Texas 75026.

To celebrate the honor, TD Ameritrade Institutional will flytwo UNT representatives to the New York Stock Exchange to accept the award July 22(Wednesday), where they'll be joined by UNT's mascot, Scrappy, to help ring the closing bell. Two grants and 14 scholarships were awarded by TD Ameritrade Institutional as part ofan ongoing effort by the company to bring more young talent to financial planning careersat a time when the investment advice industry is facing a critical shortage."Registered investment advisors as a group are aging: roughly half are 55 years or older, and many of them will be looking to retire over the next decade," said Tom Nally, presidentof TD Ameritrade Institutional, in an April 14 press release. "Add that with the fact that fewerthan eight percent of advisors are under 35, and it's clear our industry needs more youngprofessionals to join us and help families better manage their finances."In addition, predictions from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2014 show that by 2022,jobs for personal financial advisors will grow by 27 percent. That's three times faster thanthe national average for other careers.Mascot Scrappy and UNT faculty join TD Ameritrade Institutional President Tom Nally in the NewYork Stock Exchange board room ahead of the closing bell ceremony, in celebration of a 50,000awarded by TD Ameritrade Institutional to the UNTfinance program. Pictured: Tom Nally, president ofTD Ameritrade Institutional, Marcia Staff, chair ofthe department of finance, insurance, real estate andlaw, Scrappy, UNT's mascot and Dave Ragan, grantwriter and adjunct faculty member."There is a huge need for financial planners," said Dave Ragan, adjunct faculty member inUNT's Department of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Law. Ragan, along with MarciaStaff, chair of the department, will represent UNT at the closing bell ceremony."Financial planning isn't just selling a mutual fund, though that is the perception some still hold," said Ragan, who is also an alumnus of the UNT department and senior financial planning specialist at Grunden Financial Advisory, Inc. "It touches on a variety oftopics, including cash flow management; home, auto, life and long-term care insurance; investments; and retirement, estate andcollege planning. Financial planning is about securing one's financial future."Ragan said the UNT program plans to use the funds to create a TD Ameritrade Internship Program at the UNT Student MoneyManagement Center, boost recruitment for the program, reimburse UNT students who complete financial literacy courses and integrate business case studies into classes – all to provide more real-world experience to future graduates and to expose more youthto financial advising."We are thrilled at the opportunities that we will be able to afford students as a result of the grant," said Staff. "Our partnership withUNT's Student Money Management Center and providing financial literacy training will allow us to reach students that we could nototherwise."In addition to providing the award to UNT, TD Ameritrade Institutional gave a second, 25,000 emerging-program grant to TempleUniversity and a total of 14 scholarships to undergraduates across the country pursuing financial planning degrees. This marks UNT's second prestigious award from TD Ameritrade.
