Why we’re closingWhy we’ve made the decision to closeHow we came to the decisionAt Nationwide, our branches are importantto us. They’re at the heart of your Society andwe know you value the face-to-face servicethey offer. There are many we have to consider whenwe’re looking at closing a branch. And it’snever a decision that’s taken lightly. But it’s more than that. We were foundedby like-minded people coming together tohelp each other to save and buy homes oftheir own. They built communities togetherand our branches were a vital part of thosecommunities. As they still are.Which is why we’re so committed to ourbranch network and we’ll always do our best tokeep our branches open. In fact, we’ve made apromise to every town and city in the UK thathas a Nationwide branch that you’ll still have abranch until at least January 2023.But there are some towns and cities wherewe have more than one branch. And wherewe have more than one branch serving acommunity, we will always have to considerthe future of the most underused branchand whether it makes sense to keep it open.Unfortunately, that’s what’s happened in thecase of Bow.First, we look at how it’s being used: how manymembers have visited over the past five yearsprior to Covid, how the branch is being usedand what other ways those branch membershave been choosing to bank with us. Evenbefore the coronavirus changed so much ofour day-to-day lives, this branch was not beingused by enough members to make it viable.Next, we consider what’s the best use of theSociety’s money for all members. As we saidbefore, this branch is being used by fewer andfewer people every year. But the day-to-dayrunning costs keep rising. When a branch costsyour Society more money than it returns, wehave to act for the benefit of every member. We’re also finding more and more membersare turning to alternative ways to look aftertheir money with us, like our online bank,Banking app and Telephone Banking services. These services require significant investmentto maintain them. So, we have to spend fairlyand in a way that benefits all our members’different needs. Finally, we look at the local community andthe surrounding branches available. In thecase of Bow, we have five branches within a3 mile radius.4Fall in branch transactions9.7%2015Important informationWe’re part of something calledthe ‘Access to Banking Standards’,which means that if ever we do closebranches, we do so responsibly. The overarching principle of thestandard is:2020% of members exclusivelyusing Bow25%% of Bow members registered foronline banking73%Please note that the data wasgathered pre-lockdown.“Customers and relevant stakeholdersof a bank branch that is closing will beprovided with clear, understandable, accessible documentation andinformation about that specific closureas soon as the bank is able to doso, also what it will mean for themand how they can continue to bankfollowing its closure.”

Working with our communitiesEven though we know it’s the best thing to do, we do appreciate that closing our Bow branch will affect the local community. Which iswhy we’re working to understand the impact of closing the branch and how we can ensure we’re still offering our members the verybest service. We’ll contact your representatives in the local area, includingyour local MP.We’ve written to our branch members to let them know we’re closing. That includes members who have visited the branch in the last 12months and have made at least three transactions. Our branch team are speaking to members in the branch toexplain the options they have. We will also be arranging a ‘Tea andTech’ event to help give members the confidence to manage theirmoney online, safely and securely. We’re putting communications in the branch and online to let peopleknow that we’re closing. We will be proactively calling vulnerable members to ensure they aresupported through this change. We’ll share any feedback we’ve received before we close the branch.5
