Janet has been on the staff of theFoundation since 1995 and is their Director ofEducation, responsible for family support programsand staff education/training.Several 50/50 prizes were distributed as wellas a set of vintage Grumman glasses donatedby Richie Buck whose dad had passed away. Thanks, Rich.Ms. Steiner’s presentation was most informative;she provided some astounding informationregarding the brain and how it functions, as well ashow the brain is affected by adverse conditions orcircumstances. Some of the points she made: There are over 3,500 brain diseases. Dementiais not a disease, it is a symptom. Alzheimer’s is acluster of several of the 3,500 diseases. We all forget things; as the body ages, this isnormal. Memory impairment becomes problematicwhen one forgets recently learned informationor forgets more often; and the inability to recallinformation later becomes more frequent. The ruleof thumb is. “As long as you remember that youforget, you are probably OK.” Alzheimer’s cannot be 100 percent diagnosedexcept through autopsy. There are many contributing risk factors for poorbrain health: some medications, smoking, excessiveuse of alcohol, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, poor diet, insufficient sleep/sleep apnea, lack of physical activity, minimal social activity/beingalone most of the time, depression, traumatic braininjury, and the list goes on. In addition to heredity, any of these factors make a person more prone todevelop brain disease. Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s; however, there are some treatments that can slow theprogression of the disease. There are clinical trialson-going across the nation, including in BrevardCounty.Next meeting February 18, at Icibahn buffet,US-1 So.
