DeadwoodDitto Controversy UpdatesA Note from Your Current EditorDittoWhen I agreed to volunteer to help edit theDeadwood Ditto, I was told that the goal was tocreate a positive community newsletter thatprovided information while striving to createcommon ground in a region that encompassespeople from diverse political and religiousbackgrounds.June 20182-38library sale in FlorencePriority registration forSiuslaw Watershed Councilsummer camp910Fire extinguisher trainingFire extinguisher training14Fire district board meetingMapleton Food ShareEnrollment deadline for LCCFlorence summer term21222326When we publish articles of an overtly religiousor political nature, we receive complaints. Overthe years, a number of people have been offendedby religious articles they perceived to becondemnatory of their own spiritual beliefs (orlack thereof).I do not feel comfortable arbitrating Ditto contentwithout first coming to a formal idea of whatDitto content should be. Most publications havesubmission guidelines. In drafting formalsubmission guidelines and submitting them toDeadwood Community Services (DCS) forreview, we hoped to find a compromise thatwould make everyone happy. We proposed tolimit political and religious content to articles thatwere positive in tone and specific to local issues.I posted the proposed submission guidelines inthe Ditto and asked for community feedbackbefore writing a final draft.Triangle Lake Food ShareMapleton Food ShareRestoration project meetingNote: For additional information on theseevents, check out the rest of the ditto. We have received plenty of feedback, but it’s allover the map. A few people have asked to bepublished and others have sent personal messagesto the editors. Some people would like to see theDitto wide open, while other would prefer to limitcertain types of content. Some communitymembers see this as a free speech issue.Although I think it’s reasonable for a publicationto have submission guidelines, I can see bothsides of the argument, and I’m fine with eitheroption.(Continued on page 2.)1

(continued from page 1)Watershed Council Summer CampSince we don’t seem to be in any danger ofcoming to consensus on this issue, I propose thatwe move forward without formal submissionguidelines and instead impose (from here on out)a word count of 350 on any article that’s not partof an editor-requested essay series (like “How ICame to Deadwood”).The Siuslaw Watershed Council is pleased toannounce thatwewill again offersummer camp for students entering 4th gradethrough high school. This year SWC is offeringone camp for all youth 4th through 12th grades onJune 25th through 29th. Come be a part ofexploring the Siuslaw watershed's many rivers, streams, and lakes.Read on for more on this issue.-submitted by ChurpaDuring the camp we travel throughout theSiuslaw region learning about plants, animals, water and land. We focus on the restoration workthat is being done to keep our watershed healthy.Campers will get a chance to make a differenceby doing hands-on restoration work. We alsohighlight some of the unique recreationopportunities in our area such as stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, sandboarding and muchmore!A Note from Your Former Co-EditorI took on being a ditto editor in order to encourageothers to participate in being an editor so thisDeadwood tradition could continue.I have many other wonderful projects andopportunities in my life at this time that I want tobeabletofocuson.I have enjoyed creating the graphic layouts andgenerally putting the ditto together, but wasalways pretty pushed for time.In the light of recent complaints, it seems that Iam not the best person for this volunteer positionand therefore I resign as editor to make way forsomeone else more suited to this job.My simple request is to be considerate of theeditors who are simply doing their best to satisfya diverse community of people. Please rememberthe motto of Deadwood "Where Diversity Lives,"which includes many spiritual and religiouspaths. Meanwhile we can invite each other toparticipate in our different ways, we need notbombard. Let's be gentle with each other.-Submitted by MarygoldCamp is 75 for the whole session from June 25ththrough 29th and scholarships are available!Registration packets are available on our websiteat http://www.siuslaw.org/camps/. You may alsocontact our office at 541-268-3044 to request apacket. We hope that your child can join us this summeras we explore the lakes, forests, and streams ofthe Siuslaw and Coastal Lakes Watersheds.Additional Community FeedbackWow! The Ditto is really getting interesting. Please let’s not trade out important stuff forgardening news—after all, what is more engagingthan the answer to the great question? Yeah Ditto!Print what you want. Unfortunately, this makesthe job of sorting more difficult. Ladies you’reunder the glass now.-submitted by James Webb2

“Riding on the Clapboard of Omnibus”A relatively modern expression but with suchdepth of meaning—anyone (well mostanyone) who’s visited a “third world”country, particularly where there is nohighway system, has experienced thatphenomenon of public transportation knownvariously as the omnibus. There are, I’m sure, many variations of form and name, but theimage is of a smallish VW bus-style vehicle, maybe slightly larger and perhaps even madeby Volkswagon, whose sole purpose is tocarry as many people as possible over themost impossible terrain features, referred toin this country as roads. Quite often longboards have been added outside the length ofthe bus on which more desperate passengerscan stand and hang on for dear life. These arecalled clapboards or “claps.” These alwaysoverlooked vehicles are the mainstay oftransportation and are usually seen coveredwith humanity, even on top, as they hold ontothe rails along the sides of the roof. Mymemory is of one faded red and white orcream color and, quite often, little or noseating inside. Each trip is a unique adventureand well worth the price. On Memorial DayCoast Community Radio KMUN Astoriaplays the greatest R&R from the 60s and 70s,stuff from Chubby Checker and before. Thisis Memorial Day and nobody wants to talkabout that—let’s party! Yeah, we all gotmemories—some good, some not so good. When KMUN played Arlo’s UniversalSoldier today (by request), it really got tome—took me back, and I had to let it out.Only once in the forty years of my residencehere has anyone thanked me for my service—and it was a tourist couple who stopped to askme for directions. I was so stunned I nearlyfell over. I was speechless.I was drafted but quickly got addicted to theexcitement and stayed ten years. At no timecan I remember a sense of “fighting for mycountry.” I was in it for the thrills—like amercenary of sorts. I felt I didn’t deserve theirthanks.-submitted by James Webb-submitted by James (no last name given)Editor’s note: Drawings on this page by the late greatPeter Ashwanden, who illustrated The People’s Guideto Mexico.
