GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL KINESIOLOGYONE-YEAR, STUDY FROM ANYWHEREThe Graduate Diploma in ProfessionalKinesiology provides professional training andclinical skill upgrading for current and futurepractitioners of Kinesiology. Individuals willgain advanced theoretical knowledge andpractical experience to help prepare themto work within the scope of practice of aKinesiologist.The diploma program is offered over a12-month time frame commencing inSeptember. Students enroll on a full-timebasis and complete course work as required.The program includes four online coursesthat run consecutively, and four 5-day on-sitepractical courses.This combination of online and on-sitecourses gives students the option to live inThunder Bay or to live in an alternate locationand attend the Thunder Bay campus tocomplete the practical courses. Bi-weeklyGrand Rounds compliment the onlinelearning modules and can be attendedvirtually. These sessions offer students theopportunity to study from a distance andstill engage with professors and peers. Theformat of course delivery may also allowstudents to maintain employment whilecompleting their studies. The program alsoincludes a 200-hour practicum placementthat may occur within the province, thecountry, or internationally provided a suitablesetting is identified with an appropriatesupervisor.“The graduate program gave me many tools to assess, treatand design appropriate programs for my clients. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSContent in the program includes the followingadvanced level topics: assessment skillsrelated to peripheral and spinal joints;exercise prescription for both healthyindividuals and those with chronic disease;communication and leadership in the contextof ergonomics and disability management;business, ethics, and risk managementrelated to kinesiology.Admission to the program is consistent withLakehead University’s policy for admissionto Graduate Programs. COURSE DESCRIPTIONSFive full course equivalents (FCEs) arerequired to fulfill the requirements forgraduation, including the required practicumcourse, Kinesiology 5380 (9380) Experiences in Professional Kinesiology,which is equivalent to one FCE.KINE 5310 ADVANCED CLINICALASSESSMENT IN KINESIOLOGYProvides the theoretical foundations ofadvanced clinical assessment. Topicsinclude gathering relevant medical history,conducting functional assessment,understanding the role of posture, balance,and gait in the assessment process, andperforming upper and lower body musculartesting and neurological screening.KINE 5315 ADVANCED CLINICALASSESSMENT PRACTICALFocuses on the practical application of thetheoretical foundations of advanced clinicalassessment. Students are provided withthe opportunity to gain practical experiencein taking a medical history, performingfunctional tests and assessments, andanalyzing balance, gait and posture.4KINE 5331 COMMUNICATION ANDLEADERSHIP IN ADVANCED ERGONOMICSAND DISABILITY MANAGEMENTProvides the theoretical foundations ofreturn-to-work, disability management, andergonomics while considering organizationalcontext and basic principles of behaviourchange. Models of communication andleadership with respect to rehabilitation anddisability management are also examined.KINE 5336 COMMUNICATION ANDLEADERSHIP IN ADVANCED ERGONOMICSAND DISABILITY MANAGEMENTPRACTICALFocuses on the practical application oftheoretical foundations of ergonomics,return-to-work, and disability management,using learned models of communicationand leadership. Students will gain practicalexperience in developing and implementingphysical demands analyses, functionalcapacity evaluations, and return-to-workprograms, within the context of organizationaldisability management programs.

KINE 5350 ADVANCED EXERCISEPRESCRIPTIONKINE 5375 THE PRACTICE OFKINESIOLOGYProvides the theoretical foundation ofadvanced exercise prescription for apparentlyhealthy individuals and for populations withchronic disease and/or related disorders,including cardiovascular diseases, obesity,cancer, diabetes, and musculoskeletaldisorders. Advanced training concepts toimprove health, fitness, and performance arediscussed in relation to client needs.Theoretical and practical aspects ofassessment, prescription, communicationand leadership, and business practice areincorporated in this culminating course.Scenarios provide a comprehensive overviewof the practice of kinesiology drawingfrom experiences gained by the studentsthroughout the program.KINE 5355 ADVANCED EXERCISEPRESCRIPTION PRACTICALFocuses on the practical application ofadvanced exercise prescription for apparentlyhealthy individuals, and for populations withchronic diseases and/or related disorders.Encompasses development, implementation,and critical analysis of treatment plansthrough the discussion of case scenarios.KINE 5370 BUSINESS, ETHICS, AND RISKMANAGEMENT ISSUESProvides conceptual knowledge that hasreal-world applications in business, ethics,and risk management for the professionof kinesiology. Topics may include thedevelopment of marketing and businessplans, project management, businessfinancing, and accounting principles. Legalliability, risk management, and fitness andsafety standards are discussed from anethical practitioner approach.KINE 5380 (9380) EXPERIENCES INPROFESSIONAL KINESIOLOGYProvides students with professionalexperiences through the completion ofa 200-hour practicum. Opportunitiesare selected from diverse pre-approvedcommunity placement partners. Studentswork closely with the Graduate DiplomaProgram Coordinator to arrange thepracticum, and subsequently work underthe supervision of an on-site mentor. A list ofpast and current placement partners can befound on page 10.5

ONLINE COURSE FORMATON-SITE PRACTICAL COURSE FORMATOnline courses consist of self-directedlearning as well as bi-weekly Grand Rounds.Students are required to complete thenecessary readings, online learning modules,and assignments as scheduled by theprofessor. Approximately every second weekstudents participate in a three-hour GrandRounds discussion. Students in ThunderBay attend in class, while those out of townattend via video conference. Grand Roundsare structured in a problem-based learningstyle where students work through casescenarios and discuss relevant research as agroup.On-site practical courses are five days inlength and take place at the Thunder Baycampus. Students gain hands on experienceperforming the skills and assessmentsthey learned the theory behind during thecorresponding online course. Attendance ismandatory in order to pass the course andcomplete the program.“This program taught me a lot about the practical andtheoretical aspects of Kinesiology. PLACEMENT FORMATThe placement provides opportunities forstudents to gain relevant practical experienceby completing a 200-hour communitybased applied placement, working withinan appropriate setting. Students with priorexperience will be expected to seek outopportunities that expand on their presentknowledge and practice base. Placementsare to be arranged by the individual studentsin conjunction with the Program Coordinator.Students must discuss placement ideas withthe Program Coordinator prior to contactinga potential placement host. Studentscan access a database of pre-approvedplacement sites, or students can complete aplacement at an alternate site not listed in thedatabase, subject to approval by the ProgramCoordinator. Students will work closely withthe Program Coordinator (course instructor)and a Field Supervisor from the PlacementPartner to set up specific arrangements.The placement may be completed on a fulltime (minimum 6 weeks) or part-time (up to20 weeks) basis. Students are matched withplacements based on criteria determinedby the Program Coordinator in consultationwith the Placement Partner and the student;however, the Placement Partner ultimatelyselects the student for placement. A learningcontract stipulating placement objectives,and work to be completed and evaluatedto meet these objectives, must be jointlyapproved by the student, the student’s FieldSupervisor, and the Program Coordinator.7

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCYREQUIREMENTSApplicants whose first language is not Englishmust demonstrate they can cope with thelanguage demands of an English languageuniversity.
