We asked for yourinvolvement and you delivered, just likeyou always do. Independent pharmacistsstand together, and we are proactive. Weknow that what we do today determinesour futures. What we set in action determines our legacy,” Sherrer said.Answering the call, especially onbehalf of patients, is a basic tenet forcommunity pharmacists.“As independent community pharmacists we are the voice of our patients. We are faced with the enormous task offighting for the rights of their health careand our small businesses,” Sherrer said.“Our collective actions have the ability toinfluence the lives of our patients and toshape the future of independentpharmacy.”He pointed to the struggles faced byPresident Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who ventured to his Little White Housein Warm Springs, Ga., for its therapeutichealing springs for treatment of the poliohe contracted at 39. Just as Rooseveltdid not see his leg braces, wheelchair, and paralysis as failures and, ratherremained determined, community pharmacists must be resilient and fight.“Our world in community pharmacyhas changed, and today we face enormous challenges. Like Roosevelt, wehave to be resilient and be fighters. Community pharmacists are a special breed, but we continue to flourish becausewe are willing to adapt,” Sherrer said.“We know we have to be innovative tosurvive. As leaders in our community,It turns out, he said, about one in 10children in America reported on taxforms were fabricated by their parents.“They were just plain made up. One thing is certain: Weare stronger together, and our future isbright.”Sherrer knows all too well how one’sjourney can take a challenging turn. Sixyears ago, he had a major stroke.“I love being a pharmacist, and I loveserving my patients and my community.I never imagined that the tables wouldturn. But I had a major stroke. My entirelife changed in the blink of an eye. Iwas used to helping others, but I foundmyself in need of more help than ever before,” Sherrer said. “Now, six years later,I stand before you as a survivor. I alsostand before you as a stronger and morecompassionate leader.”He attributed his ability to persevereto his family’s love and encouragement, the support of the NCPA community, andthe help of dedicated physical therapists.“It’s not the future as I dreamed. It’sdifferent. And from what I’ve lost, I’vefound so much more. I know that everyminute is a miracle, every single daycounts, and what I do today matters,”Sherrer said. “The future of pharmacymay be different than we imagined, butI believe together we are building a trulysustainable legacy that will make the future of independent pharmacy brighter, and will ultimately improve the qualityof health care for our patients.”Be part of theconversation#NCPA2015NOTABLE TWEETS@BZRPH: Proud of all@Commpharmacy studentspresenting at yesterday’s biz plancompetition.
