This course is required beforeenrollment in Mathematics 241.TEXTBOOK: THOMAS’ CALCULUS THIRTEENTH EDITION with STUDENT’S SOLUTIONMANUAL by Thomas, Weir, Hass with publisher: Addison Wesley Longman. Includes access to“MyMathLab”.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS/CALCULATORS: I recommend bringing a picture takingdevice for in-class problems. Problems get long and taking a picture is a time saving strategy.Be aware TI-Nspire CAS calculators will also be loaned out at the beginning of the semester.BELIEFS ABOUT STUDENT LEARNING:Learning is a life-long process that is enhanced through formal classroomexperiences. While textbooks, tutors, and instructors exist to assist in learning, ultimately theresponsibility and reward of learning rests on the learner.BELIEFS ABOUT TEACHER'S ROLE:The teacher provides an environment which enables and encourages each learner toachieve his/her educational goals. METHOD OF EVALUATION:Students will earn points for successful completion of:1.Tests@50-100 points2.Daily Work (video worksheets, homework, quizzes, projects)@1-50 points3.Comprehensive Final Exam@150 points4.Participation@ 60 pointsGrading Scale:90 - 100A80 - 89B70 - 79C60 - 69D0 - 59FPlus and minus grades will be determined by the instructor at the end of the semester.You must show work when it is warranted on homework assignments, I will not accept just neatlyprinted answers. Homework must be turned in at the start of class or it will not be accepted. Ifyou are absent, homework may NOT be turned in late. No homework assignments will bereceived late for any reason.AUDITS: I will not approve your desire to change to audit status unless you are passing with a"C" grade and unless you give me a commitment to attend class.INCOMPLETE GRADE: I will consider granting an incomplete grade only in rarecircumstances such as a lengthy illness that precludes successful completion of the course withinthis semester. I will not grant an incomplete grade if you are failing or receiving a "D" grade atthe time you request an incomplete grade.CALCULATOR: You will need a graphing calculator to enhance your learning. I will loan the classTI-nspire CAS calculators for the semester. Have all cell phones and beepers turned off during class.You will not use the calculator functions of cell phones.POLICIES ON ATTENDANCE: Regular class attendance is an important part of educationalsuccess and is expected of all students. The student is responsible for all work missed due toabsence. I also expect to be notified before class that a student will not be attending a class, thiscan be done via e-mail or a phone call. I consider this common courtesy. Class begins promptlyat the scheduled time. I expect that everyone will be attentive. In the event that you must arrivelate, please enter the room unobtrusively. Excessive absences will directly affect a studentsgrade. Please be considerate and turn off cellular phones and pagers. An ADMINISTRATIVEWITHDRAWAL will be initiated when the instructor believes it is no longer possible for thestudent to pass the course.Note on late quizzes and tests:1. Quizzes: No quizzes will be made up.2. Tests: It is assumed that when a test is given during a class period that all students will beready to take the test at that time. If you are unable to attend class due to unforeseencircumstances you must contact me immediately and make up the test in the testing center(Lane Thomas bldg., third floor) BEFORE the next class period. Students who have not2

made up the test prior to the next class period will receive a grade of zero.Note: Some circumstances, such as extended illness, death in the family, will make thispolicy void, but they need to be discussed with the instructor. You must email, or phoneme with these extended circumstances.ACADEMIC HONESTY:If I determine that you have cheated on any test or group project, then you will earn a zero forthe examination or the group project. Depending on the nature of the cheating, I may considerharsher action as provided in the college “Student Handbook”.PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS:Kellogg Community College students are expected to model the skills and behaviors of workingprofessionals. This includes maintaining confidentiality, using college level oral and writtencommunication skills, and being courteous. You may be withdrawn from any course when it hasbeen determined that your behavior has been disruptive or detrimental to the learningenvironment.Confidentiality: Some courses may place you in a position of trust with access to privilegedinformation. You are expected to not divulge information that was disclosed in a relationship oftrust.Oral Communications: Some of the material in this course will touch on sensitive subjects.Always speak and listen to others, including your instructor, in a respectful way.Written Communications: All written correspondence and assignments will use college levelwriting skills in regards to spelling, grammar, punctuation, and clarity of content. This includese-mails, forums, and other electronic communication. It also includes journals, essays, and anyother written assignment.Courtesy: Arrive on time and stay for the entire class period.Put your cell phone on mute and be sure it is not visible to anyone, including you. If you musttake or return an emergency call, please go out in the hall to do so.Using personal electronic devices inappropriately hinders instruction and learning, not only forthe student using the device but also for other students in the class. Texting, surfing the internet,listening to music and other activities not conducive to learning are prohibited. Notify theinstructor if you are using an electronic device to access an electronic textbook. Ask for theinstructor’s permission before recording any portion of the class.Drinks and snacks, not complete meals, may be brought into the classroom. Please make sureyour drink has a secure lid. Clean up any mess you make.Children cannot attend class. Child care reimbursement services are available to qualifyingstudents.
