1. Introduction and CommentaryThe learner work that follows has been assessed accurately to national standards. This is one example of Merit achievement. The assignment brief covers Learning Aims A and B. TheAssignment BriefThere are no authorised assignment briefs available as yet and the one used here has beenindividually produced by the centre to fit local needs, by way of encouraging the learner todevelop materials for a Life Skills Day; a very relevant topic today. When writing AssignmentBriefs to be used for the assessment of the BTEC Entry 3 Entry to Vocational Study suite ofunits, the Assessor should ensure that all tasks clearly meet the targeted assessmentcriteria. The structure of the tasks will always target an entire learning aim(s). This is afundamental cornerstone of this suite, as it enables any learner to achieve the best grade forthem. The assessment criteria are not a set of sequential activities but a way of making ajudgement. For example, if a Pass specifies a ‘description’ and a Merit an ‘analysis’, thesedo not require two different activities but rather one activity through which some learners willprovide only description evidence and others will also provide analysis evidence.A Learning Aim must NOT be broken down into discrete tasks. It is not acceptable to havetasks or sub-tasks that target, for example, a Pass criterion only. All tasks must encouragethe learner to challenge themselves and aim for the highest level of personal achievement. In this instance the Assignment Brief contains one task for both Learning Aim A and LearningAim B. The Assignment Brief presented is fit for purpose. The overarching task for Learning Aim A is the provision of examples of how the learner hasused online technology in their everyday life. For Learning Aim B it is about how they havemanaged associated risks. The mode of presentation is noted as possibly a table but is reallyquite open-ended. This is appropriate as it will allow the learner to choose the way to presentthe information whilst then demonstrating their own experience. There is sufficient scope forlearners at all levels to achieve.Pearson BTEC Entry Level 3 Introductory Qualifications – Sample Marked Learner Work - Issue 2 – February Pearson 2022

2. The Learner WorkAlways use the Essential information for assessment decisions section in the specification forclarification on when an assessment criterion can be awarded. This provides amplification tothe grading criteria. Reference to this assessment guidance will ensure that the assessmentof the evidence that the learner has produced fully meets the quantitative and qualitativerequirements of the criterion. When assessing the learner’s work it is important that the assessor looks for where thelearner has produced evidence of a quality that is appropriate to the command verb in theassessment criteria. For Learning Aim A the learner has to Develop online technology skills. The learner has achieved A.M1 by producing materials that show how she has used onlinetools she has used. The Merit criterion requires the learner to Develop simple skills forusing online technology, recognising some risks. The learner has met this in the table. Several tools are used and at the end of each anassociated risk is noted. For Learning Aim B the learner has to Use online technology safely. The learner has met B.M2 in the table of work, following up on each risk identified with astrategy of how to stay safe including an account of why she did this. The Merit criterionrequires the learner to Use simple strategies for staying safe online, outlining thepurpose of the strategies. The learner has produced a poster about staying safe which gives some very good advicefor the day but is a guide rather than personal reflection. Whilst it is a good piece of work itdoes not in itself address the criteria. The assessor has made suitable comments to validate the award of the Merit and has fedback well to the learner.Pearson BTEC Entry Level 3 Introductory Qualifications – Sample Marked Learner Work - Issue 2 – February Pearson 2023
