A Message from Our President.Unlocking potential. One life at a time.Dear Friends,Woods Services has earned a national reputation for thecompassionate, quality supports it provides for people withintellectual and developmental disabilities. We assistpeople with special needs in unlocking their potential, discovering their talents, and learning skills that help themlive as independently as possible and enjoy fulfilling andrewarding lives. An energy radiates at Woods Services as you move through ourresidences and day programs. The individuals we serve are growing, learning, and living well with the support of a dedicated andcompassionate staff. We cheer the successes of individuals, some ofthem major like Maddy and Val who you will read about in this report, butmore are small incremental steps taken toward greater independence. We also celebrated organizational successes in fiscal year 2015, whichincluded the opening and dedication of the Stabler NeuroRehab Centerwith a keynote address given by The Honorable Patrick J. Kennedy. Therenovated and expanded space has enabled us to open a Clubhousefor individuals who have acquired brain injuries, one of 17 in the UnitedStates in which persons with brain injuries can participate in groupactivities that help them build their skills to prepare them for communityemployment. In addition, Beechwood NeuroRehab was awarded acontract with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for its AssistedLiving Program for Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury. Our day programs are an area of growth for Woods. Including ourschools, employment alternatives, and the Clubhouse, we increased dayprogram enrollment by 61 percent from 2014 to 2015. We also increasedemployment opportunities for the people we serve by opening a kioskat the Oxford Valley Mall where the individuals we serve sell crafts andfloral arrangements for our Yellow Daffodil Flower Shop. In addition,we opened the Common Grounds Café in our former WoodlandsEducation Center where one can purchase coffee, snacks and lunchMonday through Friday from 7 am-4 pm. Both provide many differentskill development opportunities from retail sales to inventory to foodpreparation. All lead to community employment possibilities. We were founded more than a century ago by visionaryMollie Woods with two simple goals — to advance thequality of life and standard of care for individuals withdisabilities. She gained international recognition for hergroundbreaking work in helping children with exceptionalneeds experience the joy of achievement and leadfulfilling lives.Today, we’ve broadened her mission to serve people of allages and levels of care with a unique model that empowersthem to set and achieve ambitious goals. Our model relieson the strength of our highly trained, highly motivated, andextremely dedicated team of clinicians, educators andcounselors who work in partnership with the people we serveto develop and implement highly individualized support plansthat are as unique as they are.Like most human service organizations, we’ve experiencedchallenges as funding resources dwindle and demands forservices increase. Despite these difficulties, Woods Servicesremains in a strong financial position enabling us to stayfocused on our commitment to the people we serve. We will continue to innovate and find solutions to helpindividuals with disabilities unlock their potential andrealize their dreams.Sources of Funding for Individuals Served by WoodsFrom the days of Mollie’s founding, to the present, we have helpedpeople with exceptional needs unlock their potential, experience the joysof achievement, and live meaningful and fulfilling lives. We are gratefulfor the extraordinary support we receive from family, friends, businessesand foundations who partner with us to guarantee that we can continueto honor the ideals set forth by Mollie Woods. Thank you especially to ourstaff who form the core of our programs. Their dedication, in conjunctionwith participation from many family and friends, ensures that individualswith disabilities will have opportunities and choices that lead to growthand personal fulfillment. Thanks once again for all of your support.Sincerely,Scott Spreat, Ed.D.President and CEO2015 Woods Services Annual Report Unlocking potential.EXCEPTIONAL PEOPLE. FULFILLING LIVES.

Program Specialist Chris Jowett; Clinician Kim Schreffler;Clinical Director Constance Grant; Residential ManagerRichard Reid, and Education Director Terry Czarkowski. While Val’s parents and his team met weekly to set goals,it was the direct care staff who were with him continuallyand gained his trust who have helped him become aloving, interesting young man.In general, teams meet as frequently as is needed, but notas often as Val’s. This extraordinary group met each weekto discuss his progress and to establish the next goal towork toward. Some weeks, the same goal remained on thetable and different strategies were developed to help himachieve it. Over the first few weeks, Val was able to walk toschool where a special classroom was set up for him.The duration of time spent in a chair in the classroomincreased over time, gradually other students wereintroduced into the room, and now Val takes part in lessonsspending a full day actively participating in school. The Woods Difference. Val’s Story.A warm July day greeted a then 14 year-old Val as hearrived at Woods in a padded van accompanied by hisfather and a behaviorist. Val’s actions prevented him frombeing transported any other way as he would kick out thewindows. Those and other behaviors kept him fromparticipating in daily life activities as he usually hurt himselfor others. Even with the most intensive supports, schoolbecame a place of continual crisis.Jani and Lenny Sblendorio, Val’s parents, arrived withunsettled certainty as they accepted their decision tomake a journey of the heart more than 100 miles from thetheir home in Wayne, New Jersey to Woods in Langhorne,PA. Could Woods unlock the power of thought that theyhoped their son with autism capable? Would he be safe? While their expectations of Woods were high, what hastranspired has exceeded their wildest hopes and dreamsfor Val, and frankly, for them as well. As a result ofintensive teamwork in his first year, his aggressivebehaviors decreased significantly, he became curiousabout his surroundings, his communication improvedand a loving personality started to blossom. The staff assigned to work with Val played a significantrole in his improvement. His team comprised thefollowing: two direct care staff members, Tony Balterand Marcelle Goode; teacher Denise Tholey; No longer isolated, Val is now a recognized and well-lovedresident of Woods. He lives a life beyond confusedexistence, and interacts, understands and learns from hisfriends, each one with their own special gifts and needs. To the delight of all, Val now has a limited, yet growing, sight word vocabulary, and looks for new experiences.Jani and Lenny believe that, “This type of collaborationover the years is unmatched and cannot be duplicated.Where else is there such a detailed database of howinterventions work or do not work in multiple environments? This would NEVER be duplicated outside of Woodsdespite our intensive efforts.” The progress is clear,“Our son had zero friends and he is now the mini Mayor ofWoods. His safety needs are met without hindering himfrom new experiences. Val has opportunities forenrichment at all times.”The Sblendorios recognize that the sacrifice and challengethey met more than six years ago now affords a new lifefor their family - a life that they had not envisioned, or eventhought attainable. Holidays and weekends are spent withVal at Woods Services. While Val is their only child, theylovingly open their hearts to ALL of their Woods family.“Thank you Woods Services, we are so grateful to you andyour team, and are proud to walk arm and arm as we gothrough our journey with autism together.”2015 Woods Services Annual Report Unlocking potential.THANK YOUTo all of ourgenerous donors. We couldn’t do whatwe do without youand all your support. We extend our sincere GRATITUDE and heartfelt THANKS to those who have invested in Woods’ exceptional peopleand programs that enable us to support individuals in attaining a fulfilling life. Hermost significant challenge was controlling her anger, whichled to violent rages and threatening behavior. Frankly, our staff had never seen such extreme outbursts and hadreservations about admitting her. However, they felt thatthey could make a difference in her life through supportthat would empower her to make the changes necessaryto enable her to return home to her family. The influence and impact of this mission has bolsteredMaddy’s self-esteem. She now values her ability to makea tangible difference in the world. Maddy’s 360 degree lifeturnaround in just two years is one of the most significantwe’ve experienced. Our staff believes that championingthis cause became part of her therapy aimed at learning, developing, and nurturing positive behaviors. Maddy nowhas self-confidence and dreams for her future! In just a little more than two years of treatment, Maddy’slife has changed forever. Madelina E. Kubasta, age 17,was honored in November by the Central Bucks Chamberof Commerce for her leadership in the UNLESS initiativechampioned by the Philadelphia Zoo. The UNLESS projectis an effort to raise awareness of the harmful effects onthe natural habitats of many endangered species by theproliferation of palm oil, pulp and paper plantations. Mostaffected by this tragedy are the orangutan and Sumatrantiger through unsustainable farming and deforestation inthe world’s rain forests.Maddy says she is most grateful to her grandfather andmother for finding Woods Services, which she calls “ablessing.” She has big plans for her future. Inspired byher grandmother, who once owned a floral shop, Maddyexpects to return to her Washington home and pursue acareer in floral design. In preparation for this career, youmay have seen her captivating smile at our own YellowDaffodil Flower Store. Our staff at Woods believes thatMaddy is their “blessing” because she has taught themabout perseverance, hope, and joy.Maddy immersed herself in this initiative through theencouragement of her clinician, Dr. Constance Grant, whocorrectly predicted that Maddy would empathize with thesuffering animals. Maddy’s leadership of the palm oilinitiative in school has been pivotal in her overall treatment.Living so far from her home and family in WashingtonState, Maddy easily related to the displacement of theorangutans from their rainforest homes. Their plightmotivated her to become an advocate, share their storyand promote environmental conservation for orangutansand other endangered wildlife.EXCEPTIONAL PEOPLE.Her wish is that all animals can have a home that is theirnatural place in the world just as she will go home to hers. Please follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/WoodsOrganization to read stories of other individualswhose lives have changed thanks to the exceptional staffat Woods.Exceptional People.
