We areexcited to see your work.Kill JoyHouston, TXjustseeds.org/artist/killjoy/ https://joyland.spaceHello, Print Friend podcast, Episode 36, 25 March 2020: .instagram.com/kill.joy.land/Kill Joy's work is grounded in honouring the earth and seekingenvironmental and social justice. Her work is an interpretation ofworld mythology and a study of ancient symbols. She integratesstory telling with calls to global, mental, physical, emotional andspiritual awareness and action. Her practice centers around reliefprintmaking, mural painting and more recently, puppet making. All of these mediums are particularly enjoyed for their graphicquality to talk about narratives in a context that is bold and easilyabsorbed. She believes that art is meant to be enjoyed by all peopleand not only confined between the walls of institutions. Much ofher printmaking practice also involves printing posters for peopleled campaigns, youth workshops wheat pasting posters on thestreet and making art affordable.Kill Joy, also simply referred to as Joy, has family originally fromand partly residing in the archipelago known as the Philippinesand based partly in the state referred to as Texas. Her work sitsat the intersection where jungle meets desert. She was raised inthe desert of west Texas, but has family links to the Pacific islands.Joy spends a lot of her time thinking about and working withdifferent cultural groups managing challenges and issues of thediaspora and also of the struggles faced by communities rooted intheir homeland. The immediacy of print offers the opportunityto explore these ideas for both self and for community in aninstinctual and rapid mark making. Because community and landare intrinsically linked, Joy's work is also very much about thenatural world. A belief in that the freedom of all human beingsis equally tied to the transformative freedom, free of greed andcontamination, for the Earth. You will see a new person in the photo below. Bella joined McClain’s inApril 2021. She has experience with a range of printmaking processes with aspecific focus on intaglio, relief, and screen printing, as well as multi-mediasculpture and installation; and has participated in numerous gallery showsthroughout the Pacific Northwest and nationally. Bella is passionate aboutthe natural world, likes to grow flowers, ride her bike and find glintingtreasure-trash. Bella’s personality and fun spirit have given a new boost ofenergy to the shop and we are thrilled to have her.Thank you so much for your continuing support of McClain’s. We wouldn’tbe here without each and every one of you. Stay safe and here’s to betterdays ahead. Try placing thetongue softly just behind the teeth, as if you were saying "la," and makea sound half way between r and l. It should take hardly any effort to say.The "r" in the word "baren" uses this sound.VowelsWhile English has at least eighteen vowel sounds, Japanese has only five:aiueo"ah""ee""oo""eh""oh"So the word "moku hanga," the Japanese word for woodblock print, ispronounced "moh-koo hahn-gah."Cranfield Wax Drier, Copper Traditional Ink and Metallic Relief Ink Set,page 18Metric ConversionsJapan uses the metric system, so sizes for most of the supplies from thatcountry are metric. Blocks and PlatesShina Plywood ArtPrint Linoleum Gomuban Scratch Foam Monotype Plates1/4" Shina Plywood3/8" Shina Plywood(five plies of Shina)Shina PlywoodThis fine-grained plywood comes fromHokkaido, the northernmost island in Japan.Shina feels virtually grainless as you carve itand it is dense enough to hold sharp edgesthrough many printings.A very thin layer of glue is used between theShina plies, so compared to most plywoods, these blocks will feel more like solid wood asyou carve them. Also, because the glue is thin, tools stay sharp longer.3/8" or 1/4" Plywood Comparison Because it is thicker, 3/8" is less apt to warp 3/8" can be safely carved on both sides If the block is to be carved on both sides, 3/8"is more economical If the block is to be carved on just one side, 1/4"is more economical Because it is thinner 1/4" is easier to print onan etching pressIf you plan to carve both sides of a block, tape a sheet of heavy paper to the side notbeing cut. This will protect it from dents andscratches while you carve the top side.On standard sizes, the wood grainon the block runs parallel with the longestdimension. Custom blocks can be cut with thegrain running parallel to the short dimension.GrainTo prevent warping, store blockshorizontally in a dry place, away from heat.Storing(five plies of Shina)1-11 each12 each1-11 each12 each 3.25 3.09D12604" x 6" 2.25 2.14D12404" x 6"D12616" x 8" 4.35 4.13D12416" x 8" 6.30 5.99D12628" x 10" 7.40 7.03D12428" x 10" 10.70 10.17D12639" x 12" 9.95 9.45D12439" x 12" 14.30 13.59D126412" x 16" 17.65 16.77D124412" x 16" 25.40 24.13D126514" x 18" 23.25 22.09D124514" x 18" 33.45 31.78D126614" X 20" 25.75 24.46D124614" X 20" 37.10 35.25D126716" x 20" 29.55 28.07D124716" x 20" 42.50 40.38D126818" x 24" 39.95 37.95D124818" x 24" 57.45 54.58D126920" x 24" 44.30 42.09D124920" x 24" 63.80 60.61D127020" x 30" 55.50 52.73D125020" x 30" 79.85 75.86D127122" x 28" 56.95 54.10D125122" x 28" 82.00 77.90D127224" x 32" 70.95 67.40D125224" x 32" 102.10 97.00D127324" x 36" 79.85 75.86D125324" x 36" 114.95 109.20D127430" x 40" 110.90 105.36D125430" x 40" 159.55 151.57D127536" x 36" 119.80 113.81D125536" x 36" 172.40 163.78D127636" x 48" 159.75 151.76D125636" x 48" 229.85 218.36Please note that wemay lose the width of the saw blade (upto 1/8") from the dimensions of a block.Exact and custom sizes can be cut for asmall additional charge. Japanese Carving ToolsFutatsu Wari Moku Hanga ToMoku Hanga NomiMalletsJosei Moku Hanga ToNamisei Moku Hanga ToTool SetsFutatsu Wari Moku Hanga Totwo part woodblock carving toolsMade by master craftsmen in Japan using techniques passed down forgenerations, these hand-forged blades are some of the only tools in theworld designed specifically to carve yama sakura, the hard mountaincherry traditionally used for Moku Hanga. The material choice, bladegeometry, bevel angle and handle design all reflect this legacy of artisanshoning their craft for centuries.6.0mmFutatsu Wari blades are made of high-carbon steel forge-welded by handto wrought iron, which provides both an extremely sharp cutting edgeand a tool that can be easily sharpened. Compared to Josei or Namiseitools, these blades are more robust and they work exceptionally well onany carving substrate from hardwoods like cherry to softer woods likeShina plywood. Komasuki have a deeper U shape compared to Maru Toand Aisuki have a bull-nose or fan shaped tip so they glide more easilythrough wood compared to Hira To. The blades are approximately 8cm(3 1/8") in length and are designed to be re-sharpened, repositioned, andeventually replaced.Futatsu Wari handles are made of kaba (birch). The brass ferrule can beremoved, allowing the handle to swivel open to reveal the blade within. The brass ferrule on the Hangi To can also be removed so the bladewill slip out of the groove that holds it in place. The total length of theassembled tool is approximately 12.5cm (5") and the end of the handleis rounded to fit comfortably into the hand when held in the traditionalJapanese two-handed grip (see upper left).6.0mm6.0mmHangi ToKomasukiknife, right- or left-handedu-gougeAisuki6.0mmSankaku Tobull-nose chiselv-gougeC1811RC1811L1.5 mm 39.30C18201.0 mm 42.50C18301.0 mm 34.35C18401.0 mm 58.70C1813RC1813L3.0 mm 39.30C18211.5 mm 40.55C18311.5 mm 32.30C18411.5 mm 53.35C1814RC1814L4.5 mm 42.90C18222.0 mm 40.55C18322.0 mm 32.30C18422.0 mm 53.35C1816RC1816L6.0 mm 46.45C18233.0 mm 40.55C18333.0 mm 32.30C18433.0 mm 53.35C1817RC1817L7.5 mm 56.75C18244.5 mm 46.00C18344.5 mm 35.90C18444.5 mm 60.60C1819RC1819L9.0 mm 62.00C18266.0 mm 51.90C18366.0 mm 40.65C18466.0 mm 69.357.5mm 45.509.0mm 54.70The craftsmen are gradually switching to roundferrules on all of the tools so please do not besurprised if the ferrule on your new tool is round.C18277.5mm 55.95C1837C18299.0mm 67.25C1839Replacement BladesAisuki, Blade Onlyfor Futatsu Wari Moku Hanga Tobull-nose chiselReplacement blades are designed to fit intoFutatsu Wari Moku Hanga To handles. They measure approximately21cm (8¼") in length.Kento Nomi is a specialized tool designed to make kento (registrationmarks) by hand. In the days of Ukiyo-e printmaking, this was the onlytool used by the printer instead of the carver. The length is approximately16.7cm (6").12.0mmThis combination of large and smallhand-forged professional quality toolschosen by Moku Hanga teacher andartist Richard Steiner of Kyoto, Japan isan excellent foundation set for anyoneserious about woodblock printmaking.Includes a canvas tool carrier to protectthe tools. Josei Moku Hanga Tosuperior quality woodblock carving toolsJosei Moku Hanga To are hand-made using the same techniques asour Futatsu Wari tools. The blades are hand-forged, high-carbon steellaminated to wrought iron and are the same 8cm (3 1/8") length astheir professional counterparts. The differences come from theirintended purposes. The bevel angle on Josei and Namisei tools canbe changed to perform a wide range of carving techniques includingthree-dimensional work and high relief. Like the Futatsu Wari tools, the craftsmen have given our tools a shallow bevel angle intended forcarving wood that is resting on a horizontal surface.Josei tools also come in the widest range of blade design and sizes. The long handles of the Josei tools are made of honoki (silver magnolia)which can be shortened to suit different carving practices. The bladegeometry of these tools is slightly different from Futatsu Wari tools toreflect their intended use in a variety of applications. The shape of theu-gouge is more shallow and the chisel is square at the tip, comparedto the deeper shape of the u-gouge and the rounded bull-nose chiselblade on the Futatsu Wari tools.A Josei tool’s usable blade extends well into the handle, and as the toolis sharpened over it’s lifetime it will become shorter. The handle canthen be whittled down to expose more usable blade, the same way apencil is sharpened. Many carvers cut down the handles of Josei and Namisei tools so theyfit comfortably in the hand; see the facing page for instructions.Total length is approximately 21cm (8¼"). Made for hand carvingonly, not for use with a mallet which will damage the handle.6.0mm6.0mm6.0mm6.0mmSho ToMaru ToHira ToSankaku Toknife, right- or left-handedu-gougechiselv-gougeC2602RC2602L 1.5 mm 18.45C26411.0 mm 20.85C27121.5 mm 18.35C27511.0 mm 32.30C2603RC2603L 2.0 mm 18.45C26421.5 mm 19.35C27132.0 mm 18.35C27521.5 mm 30.55C2604RC2604L 3.0 mm 18.45C26432.0 mm 19.35C27143.0 mm 18.35C27532.0 mm 30.55C2605RC2605L 4.5 mm 19.20C26443.0 mm 19.35C27154.5 mm 19.15C27543.0 mm 30.55C2606RC2606L 6.0 mm 20.75C26454.5 mm 20.15C27166.0 mm 20.75C27554.5 mm 32.30C2607RC2607L 7.5 mm 23.85C26466.0 mm 21.50C27177.5 mm 22.38C27566.0 mm 38.38C2608RC2608L 9.0 mm 25.95C26477.5 mm 24.48C27189.0 mm 24.25C27577.5 mm 51.08C2609RC2609L 10.5mm 30.58C26489.0 mm 26.70C271910.5mm 28.48C27589.0 mm 63.85C2610RC2610L 12.0mm 32.90C264910.5mm 31.65C272012.0mm 30.55C2611RC2611L 15.0mm 41.40C265012.0mm 34.45C272115.0mm 38.90C265115.0mm 43.25C272218.0mm 47.38C265218.0mm 50.68Special Order: Allow eight to twelve weeks for the tools listed below to arrive from JapanSho ToMaru ToHira Toknife, right- or left-handedu-gougechiselSankaku Tov-gougeC2612RC2612L 18.0mm 49.15C265321.0mm 65.75C272321.0mm 61.95C2613RC2613L 21.0mm 64.08C265424.0mm 77.40C272424.0mm 72.98C2614RC2614L 24.0mm 75.45C275910.5mm 86.60C276012.0mm 102.60C276115.0mm 150.75Magari Moku Hanga ToBent neck tools are made to be held in a clenched fist or like a pencil, instead of the traditional ways of holding tools.
