Youth Grant recipientsmust submit a picture and article for The Policemen’s Magazine detailing how the grant was used within the yearafter receiving the grant to be eligible for future grants. At the 1992 Convention, the State Executive Board made a recommendation that the Youth Grant should not beused in conjunction with an agency-sponsored program. The Board felt that the intent of the grant is to provideassistance to the local PB & PA Unit sponsored programs, and not to subsidize a program that is administeredby a governmental agency. At the 1996 Convention, a resolution was passed by the delegates present, which raised the amount of the grants. The resolution stated that local units could apply for a youth grant requesting up to 1,000.If you have sent your request in, please double check with the Springfield office. The master file will be kept atthe office in Springfield and will be brought to the Convention for review by the Executive Board. All applications must be submitted to the address above by September 15, 2017. Five Ridiculous ReasonsYou Need More Liability InsuranceYou’ve worked hard for your home, vehicles, and otherpossessions. All that hard work could be in jeopardy because of a lawsuit. You hope it never happens, but youcould be sued for an auto crash that you or a family member caused or for an accident at your home.Anyone can sue for just about any reason, and here arefive examples from the list of most ridiculous lawsuits of2016 showing why you need to be prepared:5. A mother and son who sued the EducationalTesting Service and the College Board over atypo that gave New Jersey students fiveextra minutes to take the SAT test.4. A California woman who sued SoulCycleworkout bicycles and the instructor for “grossnegligence” after she fell off the stationary cycleat a gym.3. An Indiana man who sued over a printer hebought on Craigslist for 40 because he claimedit was broken. The original suit was tossed out because the litigant had thrown away the printer. He refiled in March of 2015 requesting damages forfraud, breach of contract and emotional stress. Aspecial judge ruled in his favor, awarding 30,000. That ruling was eventually overturnedby an appeals court because the man who sued isknown to be a repeated, flagrant, and continuingabuser of Indiana lawsuit laws, but not before incurringthousands of dollars in lawyer’s fees.2. A woman who filed and won a 161,000 lawsuit after she walked into a bucket truck liftwhile texting. Video surveillance showed therewere warning cones and she had walked past itthree times before the incident. Phone recordsconfirm that she was sending a message at the time.1. A California woman who filed a suit againstFresh, Inc. over their Sugar Lip Treatment balm. She claimed the company conned consumersinto thinking there was more balm in thetube than there actually was. The case wasthrown out after the amount of balm measuredup to what the package stated. You can read the entire list of ridiculous lawsuits at:www.facesoflawsuitabuse.org.The Policemen’s MagazineWhile all of these are worst-case scenarios, lawsuits dohappen and they could be costly. If someone were hurt because of an accident you or your family caused, you couldbe responsible for their medical bills, loss of income andother damages. These are real verdicts or settlements fromrecent cases: 7.2 million settlement on behalf of three peopleinjured in a collision with the driver of a pickuptruck 3.2 million verdict on behalf of a child killedwhen a man driving more than 60 miles per hourin a 25 mile per hour zone struck the familyvehicle 1.5 million for a man who suffered a back injury requiring surgery as the result of anautomobile accident 1.1 million on behalf of a 26 year old motorcyclist who was struck by a left turning automobileoperated by a 16-year-old driver. You can also be sued if someone slips and falls at yourhome or if your dog bites them. All this goes to prove that you need to protect yourself.Your auto, homeowners or renters insurance provide someliability protection from lawsuits. However, if you are ahigh earner, have a lot of assets, or have inexperienceddrivers in the house, you should consider an umbrella policy, which can give you 1 million or more of coverage.People sue; that’s why it’s a good idea to contact a California Casualty advisor at 1.800.800.9410 or visit www.calcas.com/personal-umbrella to check that you haveadequate liability limits on your auto, home and rentersinsurance, and to investigate whether an umbrella policyis right for you.And because you work so hard to keep your communities safer, don’t forget to enter California Casualty’s WorkHard/Play Hard “Choose Your Tools” sweepstakes. Thedeadline to enter for the chance to win 5,000 of DeWALTtools is November 13 at www.policefiregiveaway.com.This article is furnished by California Casualty, providingauto and home insurance to law enforcement officers forover 40 years.
