Linux is a fully featured Unix system that runs on many hardware platforms,including Intel, DEC Alpha, Sun SPARC and SGI MIPS, with one single source code base. Linuxsupports a vast array of commercial software and it offers multiple graphical user interfaces, includingOSF/Motif with CDE and Windows95. Linux interoperates very well with other operating systems,including those from Apple, Microsoft and Novell. In 1996, its fifth year of existence, Linux was alreadyselling more than half a million copies, which amount to almost 20% of the shipping volume of all Unixdistributions combined. Its unofficial installed base is estimated to have grown far beyond ten millionsites - this far exceeds any other operating system except, of course, DOS and Windows95. Today,Linux drives hardware that ranges from mission-critical embedded systems, such as experiments onboard the last few Space Shuttle missions, up to parallel supercomputers, such as Beowulf clusters,which are sponsored by the San Diego Supercomputer Center, among others.8 PagesHP – Decus IT-Symposium 2006www.decus.de2
