What is a Coalition?O A diverse group of individuals and organizations whowork together to reach a common goal or achieve adesired purposeOGoals often include:O Adapting, creating, or developing strategic thrustsO Influencing people or certain behaviorsO Building a healthy community

Texas Impaired Driving TaskForceO Began as an informal meetingO Evolved over the last 10 yearsO Meets twice a yearO Austin: Task Force Workshop (Fall)O Austin: Task Force Workshop & Impaired DrivingForum (Spring)O Discuss progress toward eliminating alcohol anddrug related crashes and injuries throughstakeholder work projects (Jointly & Subcommittees)O Provides guidance & technical assistance toTxDOT’s alcohol and other drug countermeasureprogram

Texas Impaired Driving TaskForceMembers include representatives from:law enforcement, prosecution, adjudication,prevention, advocacy, mediadevelopment/communications, traffic safetyeducation, treatment, research, training, alcoholservice, driver licensing, employers, administrativesanctioning, and public health/medicalThe members represent different aspects of theimpaired driving issue as well as the geographicand demographic diversity of the state

What are We Doing?OEducatingO Providing resources at the state and local levelStatewide Impaired Driving Plan; Uniform guidelines for impaired driving programs; TexasImpaired Driving Program assessment; Drug impaired driving; Evidence based programs foreducators– Information graphics & Powerpoint’s for presentations–O Creating awareness about the impaired driving issue by:–OEducating citizens through educator toolkits; Traditional trainings; Peer-to-peer groupinteraction; Employer education programs; and Media outreach campaignsEnforcingO Stepping up enforcement efforts through:Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grants and– Impaired driving mobilization grants– No refusal weekends with high visibility enforcement–OCollaboratingO Groups like the Texas Impaired Driving Task Force and statewide coalitionsare creating partnerships to attack the problem from many differentangles

Thinking About Starting aCommunity Coalition?O Create a core groupO Identify important potential partners for membershipO Recruit members to the coalition (consider gaps)O Plan and hold a first meetingO Follow up on the first meetingO Continue with next steps- Distribute minutes- Set agenda for next coalition meeting date- Stay focused on the “big picture” reason for why thecoalition existsO Re-evaluate as you proceed moving forward
