Morsels & Tidbits From Our Pastor

MORSELS & TIDBITS FROM OUR PASTORSunday gospel in everyday EnglishLater on that day, the disciples had gathered together, but, fearful of theJews, had locked all the doors in the house. Jesus entered, stood amongthem, and said, “Peace to you.” Then he showed them his hands and side. The disciples, seeing the Master with their own eyes, were exuberant. Jesusrepeated his greeting: “Peace to you. Just as the Father sent me, I send you.”Then he took a deep breath and breathed into them. “Receive the Holy Spirit,”he said. “If you forgive someone’s sins, they’re gone for good. If you don’t forgive sins, what are you going to do with them?”(from John 20).Rev. Artur Sowa, PastorJune 5, 2022The St. Francis ofAssisi Communityis a welcomingChristian family. We believe inJesus Christ andare guided by theHoly Spirit andthe example ofSt. Francis. We gather tocelebrate, togrow in theknowledge ofour faith rootedin the Catholictradition, and torecognize ourresponsibility toreach out to theworld.Notes on the ScriptureFifty days after Easter, we celebrate Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and the birth of the church occurred. With the celebration of Pentecost Sunday, the season of Easter officially comes to a close.Pentecost begins a string of three solemnity Sundays (Pentecost, Trinity, andBody and Blood of Christ) that transition us into a long stretch of ordinarytime. The readings for today rightly focus on the Holy Spirit. The celebrated Jesuittheologian Karl Rahner declares that the Holy Spirit is the “nearness of God.”Profound. Simple. But how difficult it is to remain aware of that nearness. We’re aware of the busy, the loud, the fast in our world, but trying to be always aware of the silent, constant, life-giving nearness is like trying to be always aware of your own breathing. For most of us, it’s only in moments suchas when your hot shower suddenly turns icy cold and leaves you gasping thatyou realize how much you need and desperately want that next breath.Without that breath, we die. This is more than metaphor: It is reality. “Wemust will to believe in such a nearness–in the Holy Spirit,” says Rahner, andthis is what we celebrate today: the nearness of God, the breath that will never be taken away, that is keeping you alive in this very instant so that you maywhisper, “Thank you.”Thank YouAs we conclude our Easter Season this weekend, I want to take this opportunity to thank all the ministers and volunteers for making our Easter Seasonso beautiful. I also hope and pray that with our beautiful environment andgreat liturgies we all renewed and deepened our faith a little bit more. Thankyou so very much!!!!!!Personal NoteI mentioned few weeks ago that I was going on a diet. It has not been easy, but things are good. I have been loosing weight and feeling better. In July Iam going to Poland to visit my parents, that will be a true test for me, but Iknow that eating healthy is important so I will try to keep it up.Yours in Christ,Fr. Artur Sowa
