Bakersfield College 2013-2014 CatalogABOUT BAKERSFIELD COLLEGEHistory of Bakersfield CollegeEstablished in 1913, Bakersfield College is one of the oldest two-yearcommunity colleges in the nation. The initial program offered a oneyear curriculum, and in 1915 the trustees of the Kern County HighSchool and Junior College District authorized a second year of juniorcollege and normal school courses. The college opened its presentday campus high above the Panorama bluffs in 1956. BakersfieldCollege offers courses at its satellite campuses located in downtownBakersfield at the Weill Institute, at its Delano Campus, and otherlocations in Kern County.The 153-acre Panorama campus features a state-of-the-art libraryand technology center and a 19,000-seat stadium that is the crownjewel of community colleges nationwide. These rates arebased on a limited cohort (or group) of students which are trackedfor a three-year period. The cohort is limited because it includes onlystudents who entered Bakersfield College in the fall term as firsttime, full-time students seeking a degree, certificate or to transfer.Students included in the 2008 SRTK Cohort were tracked from Fall2008 through Spring 2011 to determine their academic outcomesduring the time period.A student is included in the Completion Rate if they attained acertificate or degree or became ‘transfer-prepared’ within the threeyear period. Transfer-prepared is defined as having completed 60transferable units with a GPA of 2.0 or better.A student is included in the Transfer Rate if, within the threeyear tracking period, they transferred to another postsecondaryinstitution prior to receiving a certificate or degree or becoming‘transfer-prepared.’The table below compares Bakersfield College’s Completion andTransfer Rates to the statewide community college average.
