5Shanghai World Expo 2010Global Food Security Team University of NottinghamRepresentatives from the University of Notting ham Malaysia and UK Campuses were invited todeliver a talk at the Shanghai World Expo, inJune 2010, on the topic of Global Food Security.Prof Sayed Azam Ali, VP Research and Interna tionalisation, and Dr Asgar Ali, Associate Profes sor School of Biosciences from the University ofNottingham Malaysia Campus were joined by ProfJerry Roberts, Head of School Biosciences Univer sity of Nottingham UK Campus, to form theGlobal Food Security Team.Prof Sayed Azam Ali, delivered a presentation onthe subject of Underutilised Crops; Dr Asgar Alidiscussed Post Harvest Technologies and ProfJerry Roberts provided a presentation on thetheme of Global Food Security.The event was attended by international partici pants and students and the involvement of theUniversity of Nottingham on this particular stage,clearly demonstrates the esteem with which itsresearch is regarded on a global scale.Prof Jerry Roberts and Prof Sayed Azam AliGlobal Food Security Team

6Decentralization in Higher Education from aGlobal Perspective: Implications for Vietnamand the Region.29 30th July, 2010SEAMEO Regional Training Center hosted the International Conference in Ho Chi Minh City July 29 302010. Dr Hill was funded by the British Council to attend the conference, where he presented a paperentitled Global and National Education: The Internationalisation of the Local and the Localization of theInternational and chaired a panel on the Diversification of Resources for Higher Education.The conference was held with the purpose of enhancing the knowledge and understanding of autonomyin higher education which is always one of the key and hot issues in all discussions and planningthough it has been repeatedly grilled very early since the 1960s to cover the six areas: organization,curriculum, faculty and staff, student recruitment, finance and evaluation. Likewise, international andregional perspectives toward one of the most debated issues in higher education, decentralization,were also introduced. This conference was co organized by the British Council, Asian Institute of Tech nology, and SEAMEO RETRACThe conference proved its importance through the number of participants. As many as 120 participantswho are presidents, vice presidents, administrators from institutions in the UK, the US, Malaysia, Indo nesia, Canada, Australia, the Philippines and Vietnam took part in the conference. Presenters werethose who come from such prestigious institutions and organization as British Council, Oxford Univer sity, Asian Institute of Technology, University of Missouri Columbia, etc. A wide array of topics werepresented at the conference including Decentralization in Higher Education: an East Asian Perspective,Global and National Education: The Internationalization of the Local and the Localization of the Interna tional, Decentralization in Higher Education Institutions through University Autonomy, Autonomy andAccountability of Universities and Colleges – Current Situations and Solutions that fall into four majorsubthemes: Institutional Autonomy and Accountability; Curriculum and Management; Diversification ofFinance; and the Relevance between Higher Education and the Labor Market.

7SpringBoard4Asia Foundation Visit10th August, 2010UNMC hosts SpringBoard4Asia Foundation VisitOn August, 10 2010 a collaborative PGR project wasconducted between the University of NottinghamMalaysia Campus, and the SpringBoard4Asia Foun dation in Thailand.The Foundation works to support the development ofThai Education, especially at University and Schoollevel with the majority of the Foundation’s partnerscoming from the University sector. The Foundation’sChair Person, Assc.Prof. Dr. Pracob Cooperat formerVice President of Chulalongkorn University, leads theDoctoral Program at Surindra Rajaphat University.On August 10th the Foundation brought a group ofdoctoral students from Surindra Rajaphat Universityin Thailand to present their research proposals to apanel of academics at the University of NottinghamMalaysia Campus. Under Surindra Rajaphat's PhDstructure, their students are required to presenttheir research proposals and receive feedback fromacademic experts outside Thailand.The visiting group consisted of 22 graduate studentsand 10 faculty members from the University Surin dra Rajaphat and the Foundation. UNMC was repre sented by Prof. Sayed Azam Ali, Dr. Neville Wylie,Dr. Ganakumaran, Ms. Ruth Tomlinson and Dr. Ra hul Ganguly.The event was a huge success and is testament tothe importance the University of Nottingham Malay sia Campus places upon its ability to explore part nerships and share best practice within the SE Asianregion.PhD student presenting his Research proposal
