ForewordThe earliest mentions of Witches in Christian times depictthem as people who communicate, or claim to communicate,with the dead. This theme appears even in ancient writingsof the pre-Christian era. It is noteworthy that the associationof Witches with the dead predates the insertion of Satan orthe Devil into Witchcraft. This association was primarilyconcocted by Catholic theologians and became the basis forso-called historical Witchcraft. However, the data used byscholars that now constitutes “historical Witchcraft” is notan ethnographic study of a people known as Witches.
