She says that she kept calling and didn’t get a call back for so long that shewas afraid they didn’t want her. (Can you imagine?) She worked with TheresaMcFadden at the east campus for many years, and then she was asked to startpatient admittance. So she worked by herself with no desk. It has evolved intothe department it is today. She stepped down from leadership and is contentto come in on Thursday mornings to work with the “best crew ever” to deliverpapers and guide people to their destinations. The accent . Joan’s family moved from Ireland to Ontario, Canada 55 yearsago where she met her husband, Jim. Joan and Jim married and moved toBoston. They moved to The Villages area 17 years ago. They have 4 children, 8grandchildren, and their first great-granchild on the way. Thank you Joan for allyou are and all you do.A hospital Wow story!“I was recently a patient in the cardiac wing of TVRH after having a valvereplacement by Dr. Tim Moore. From the time I arrived to the time I wasdischarged four days later, I felt totally comforted by those caring for me. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart for such outstanding personnel. I give yourhospital an A and I plan to tell others!”hospital tours availableDeidre Rosemond, the PatientNavigator, for the AuxiliaryFoundation of TVRH is nowconducting tours of the hospital. If you see her in action, just smileand wave. Kudos toOur Volunteer AidetWe still need more volunteers to reach our goal of 1,000, that is true. But I would be greatly remiss if I did not acknowledge the wonderfuljob our Villages Daily Sun Newspaper has done to help us try toreach our goal. Without their help, we would not be anywhere nearthe numbers we have reached. They have done a wonderful job ofkeeping the public aware of our need both in articles and in publicnotices. Our application question shows that most applicants come tous from reading the Sun so we hope that they will continue to supportus because they are the most direct means to attaining our final goal. Many thanks Villages Daily Sun.a Carol HughesDirector of Public Relations, TVRH Auxiliary/FoundationWELCOMETEEN VOLUNTEERSThis is the time of year when we start getting an influx of teens whowant to volunteer at the hospital. A number of these teens are hopingto go into the medical field. Others are just trying to get the requirednumber of community outreach hours to complete their collegeapplications. This year we are establishing a new process to bring theteens on-board.iWe anticipate that this new process willnot only be more efficient and effective, but will bring TVRH teens that arededicated to doing a great job.If you have questions, please contact theVPO at 751-8176.Page 3Introduce Yourself Depending on the situation and theplace you are in . State your nameand your role at TVRH.Highlight skills and expertise of selfand other healthcare team members.deExplanationtThank YouOver the next couple of weeks, Volunteer Placement Office (VPO)representatives will be contacting the high schools to make them awareof the volunteering opportunities for teens at TVRH. VPO currentlyhas a date scheduled at the Charter School to be on-site and talk withthe students.Hopefully soon you will be seeing a number of teens volunteering invarious department within TVRH. Follow the 10 – 5 rule: at 10 feet smileand acknowledge and at 5 feet speak. Smile, make eye contact and greetthem in a pleasant manner .If theylook confused or they are looking forsomething, ask if there isanything you can do for them. Anytime you see someone looking fora sign that means they are probablylooking for something and could usesome help. NEVER ask “How Do You Feel”, youknow they are sick or nervousbecause they are in the hospital.DurationOn May 16, we will be having a one-day session for teens that willcover the interview, placement decision, ATM/TB tests, and anorientation. A new application has been developed for teens whichnow requires that they be 15 years of age, have a Parental Permissionform completed and submit two Letters of References to us. We believethat this will impress upon the teens the seriousness of the commitmentthey are making to the TVRH Auxiliary and volunteering.Currently there are a number of positions open within the Hospitalthat could be filled with teens. The timing is also advantageous for theteens to fill in for snowbirds while they are back home for the summer.Acknowledges the Patient and/or Visitor: Depending on the situation and theplace you are in .Give the Patient/Visitor a time expectation, even if it is justa time for your return. Keep patient/visitor informed as to the amount oftime a procedure or process will take. If you don’t know the procedure/process time see if you can find out.Never guess, ask someone in theknow. If there is a wait time give them thetime expectation of that wait. Depending on the situation and placeyou are in .Keep patient/visitorinformed by explaining process &procedures. Assist patient/visitor to have a clearexpectation of what will be occurring. Get correct information from the properperson. Thank the patient/visitor for choosingTVRH. Express appreciation that they havechosen TVRH as their Health CareFacility. Ask if there is anything else you cando for the patient/visitor before ending

She became involved infundraising shortly thereafter andhelped launch the first significantfundraiser – a cookbook called“Sharing Our Best”. She agreed tobecome Treasurer of the Auxiliaryin 2006 and then served in thatDean WagnerDean was one of our first DayCaptains. Dean volunteered in CitrusCo. at the hospital there until movingover to our hospital. You could alwaysexpect a smile when you checked intothe Day Captains office on FridayMornings. Dean was a very goodfriend of Jim Lemon’s and Jim willrole for the next nine years! In theearly days, Effie had to educate usall on the importance of includingour 501(c)3 tax identification on alldocuments and the dangers of callinganything a “raffle.” (It’s definitely ano-no to have a raffle in this state –it’s considered gambling without alicense). In the summer of 2008, Effie was partof the four-person group who weretasked with the job of implementinga thrift store to raise money forour hospital. She assisted in thecreation of a pro-forma to forecastthe potential cost and revenue fromthe store. In fact at the time, Effiewas one of the few people who evenunderstood what a “pro-forma” was. This store became “Ye Olde ThriftShoppe” and she continued hersupport of the project with monthlyreports of expenses and profits untilmiss their conversations. Dean, likeJim, was originally from Michigan,so they had many discussions abouthome.Dean has been married to his lovelywife for 61 years. Their health hasbeen failing as of late and Dean felt heshould resign.Page 8her recent retirement. She also servedas Comptroller for all the Hearts forOur Hospital galas the pasts sevenyears. But probably the most significantthing Effie did for the Auxiliarywas establish an accounting systemthat has been able to grow andsupport the expanded scope of ourfundraising, including the creation ofthe Auxiliary Foundation. She servedas the Treasurer for the AuxiliaryFoundation during the first yeargetting the new organization startedwith the implementation of rigorousaccounting controls.Effie will be happily reading books, playing Bridge and enjoying somefree time in her retirement, but wewill miss her passion for excellenceand her mischievous delight whenreceiving a check for the Auxiliary’sfundraising efforts. Our AuxiliaryOfficers and theFoundation Boardwill both missthe contributionsthat both of thesevolunteers made for along period of time.
