What is a PCP?A PCP, or Primary Care Provider, can be a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant that will serve asthe primary provider for your health care needs. Your PCP will help to keep you healthy by helping youwith: Referrals to a specialist Prior approval for hospital services Case management Emergency care Manage prescriptionsIf your current doctor is listed in our Health Share/Providence directory as a PCP, you can continue to usethem as your PCP. If each family member’s current doctor is listed in our Health Share/Providencedirectory as a PCP, they can continue to use their doctor as their PCP. Each family member can have adifferent PCP.Whether you decide to continue using your current PCP or decide to switch to a new PCP, please callHealth Share/Providence customer service, and tell us your PCP choice(s). As soon as your coverage begins,you and your family member(s) can make an appointment with their selected PCP(s).If you have difficulty choosing a PCP, please call Health Share/Providence customer service. We can tell youwhich PCPs are accepting new patients and help you choose a PCP close to your home. We can also helpyou find a PCP or specialist who speaks a specific language.If you do not choose a PCP for you and your family member(s) and inform us of your selection at the timeof enrollment, we will choose a PCP for you and your family member(s) until you contact us to chooseyour own.If you have a medical problem, you can locate your PCP’s phone number on your ID card and call yourPCP’s office. Providers are available any time of the day or night to help you. You can also call a ProvRNnurse at 1-800-700-0481, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. TTY users should call 711.If you have an emergency, go to the closest hospital emergency room or dial 911. Do not use the hospitalemergency room for routine health care.Specialist care and referralsSpecialist physicians will usually require a referral from your PCP. In most cases, your PCP will talk withyou and give you a referral to see a specialist. If you do not have a referral and see a specialist, you mighthave to pay for the visit yourself.Direct access specialist careThere are some specialist services that do not require a referral from your PCP. This is called direct access toa specialist. You can make appointments with a specialist who is a Health Share/Providence provider for thefollowing services: Routine women’s health care and preventive women’s health care services Family planning Immunizations (shots) Outpatient treatment for chemical dependency or drug and alcohol problems Urgent care and emergency servicesiii
