Item #1.PROCLAMATIONOFFICE OF THE MAYORNew Jersey Blind Citizens Association110th AnniversaryWHEREAS:The New Jersey Blind Men’s Club was established in 1910 by a group of forwardthinking men from Hoboken to help provide support for the blind to lead happy andproductive lives and promote acceptance by the public for the blind and visuallyimpaired; andWHEREAS:In 1930, Camp Happiness, a free summer camp vacation program for blind adults,opened as a waterfront facility on the Sandy Hook Bay in Monmouth County. The campallowed blind New Jerseyans to venture out on their own in a safe environment and learnthe basics of mobility and independent living; andWHEREAS:By 1987, the demand for everyday programs skyrocketed, leading to the transformationof Camp Happiness to include a day program. Today, the Wobser Day Camp, named inhonor of the day program’s founder, Helen Wobser, is the organization’s primary focus.They offer creative activities such as art, crocheting, wellness programs and peer supportgroups, to promote camaraderie and enrich the lives of blind and visually impairedindividuals; andWHEREAS:Now known as the New Jersey Blind Citizens Association (NJBCA), the organization,located in Leonardo, continues to serve the blind of New Jersey thanks to communitysupport and donations; andWHEREAS:This year NJBCA is celebrating 110 years of service to the blind, visually impaired andthose with deteriorating vision and they look forward to continuing to fosteran atmosphere of confidence, empowerment and community. Now,THEREFORE: Be it proclaimed that I, Mayor Tony Perry and the Middletown Township Committee, join inthe celebration of the 110th Anniversary of NJBCA and encourage the community to supportthis organization through its anniversary campaign, especially during the month of Octoberwhich is Blindness Awareness Month. During National Small BusinessSaturday, we celebrate the resolve and ingenuity of American businesses,entrepreneurs, and workers; andWHEREAS: This year, as we collectively recover from an unprecedented pandemic,Middletown is more dedicated than ever to support our small businesses; andWHEREAS: Our Nation’s more than 30 million small businesses, which employ nearly halfthe private-sector workforce and create two-thirds of all net new jobs, are thekey to propelling our economy; andWHEREAS: 89 percent of consumers in the United States agree that small businessescontribute positively to the local community by supplying jobs andgenerating tax revenue; andWHEREAS: Advocacy groups, as well as public and private organizations across thecountry, have endorsed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small BusinessSaturday; andWHEREAS: Middletown Township is committed to investing in small business owners,and therefore advancing solutions that make it easier for them to exceed theirgoals. Congresschanged the name to Veterans Day in 1954 to expand the significance of thecommemoration so that a grateful nation might pay homage to the veterans ofall wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of the nation; andWHEREAS: Middletown Township and Middletown VFW Post 2179 will honor the sacrificeand valor of our brave servicemen and women with a Veterans Day Parade onSunday, November 8th; andWHEREAS: We, as citizens of a grateful nation, are thankful for the opportunity to recognizeour distinguished veterans whose service has allowed our nation to prosper andlet us live in freedom. We pay special tribute to the valiant guardians of ourfreedom who remain listed as Missing in Action, and we offer support to theloving families who hope for their safe return; andWHEREAS: This year we celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the Veterans Day Parade.
