Congratulations Class of 2020On behalf of this University’s Board of Trustees, I am delighted to offer my congratulationsto the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science Class of 2020.You will be known forever as one of the most unique graduating classes in the history of CDU.With your on-campus classwork cut short, you have demonstrated perseverance and dedicationin finishing your final year, and we celebrate your resilience. As you move on to the next stage of your life, know that, if the pandemic has demonstratedanything, it is that the need for you as a healthcare practitioner committed to working to achieve health equity forunderserved communities is greater than ever. You have much to offer the world. Go forward in your career—or continued education—with great pride and also faith in themission of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. We are exceptionally proud of you for your achievements!Arthur J. Ochoa, JDSenior Vice President of Advancement and Chief Advancement Officer for Cedars-Sinai Health SystemChair, CDU Board of Trustees3

Congratulationsto the Class of 2020!It gives me great pleasure to offer my congratulations to the Charles R. Drew University ofMedicine and Science Class of 2020!Your hard work has paid off. We applaud you for your diligence in your studies and know that yourCDU education has prepared you for the next chapter in your career or educational journey. But the world of medicine that you now enter—indeed, the world itself—is one that we could not imagine, as COVID-19has changed medicine and our lives forever. Yet, your response as a front-line provider in health care delivery, healthpolicy and research offers a tremendous opportunity to change the face of health care while advocating for health equityin underserved communities. Consider the leadership skills and education you now have to influence and change thefollowing:- The existing health disparities that we all know to exist, the inequities that inspired you to come tothis University to study, that have been clearly revealed to an entire nation by this pandemic.- The disproportionate effect of COVID-19 upon communities ofcolor, which is evidence of the tremendous need for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, radiologic technologists and other alliedhealth professionals committed to the cause of increasing access toquality healthcare for under-resourced populations.- The mistrust in the healthcare system by many in communitiessuch as South Los Angeles, which can really only be remedied bygetting more graduates of institutions such as CDU out into thehealthcare workforce—providers who look and sound like thepeople they are caring for.In short, the world is waiting for you. This is what you have trained for. This is your time.Be bold and keep your eyes on the prize. The entire CDU Family is behind you.We could not be prouder of you as you accept this challenge.David M. Carlisle, MD, PhDPresident and CEO, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science4

Dear Class of 2020,What a year! A common American witticism says “when the going gets tough, let the toughgets going.” It has been a tough, topsy-turvy, pandemical, dark, and rough year with theunprecedented health crisis that has claimed the lives of millions, plummeted national economies, truncated campus operations across the globe, and flipped the normal for a new normal. Butyour rugged determination has prevailed ultimately and lo and behold, congratulations is such abanal word for the deserving triumphant victors of the Class of 2020.The two most joyous days in the life of a Provost is the first day of orientation that welcomes students to the campus andthe day of commencement that celebrates their final accomplishments. Although COVID-19 has robbed us of the privilegeof shaking hands, hugging, and smiling to the cameras; it certainly has failed in stealing our tremendous joy for youraccomplishments. So, we rejoice that we are alive today; we rejoice that we are a witness of you crossing the finish-line; werejoice that you have been given the opportunity to come back to participate in future commencements; and we rejoice thatno matter how dark the night is, there is joy in the morning! Go in the spirit of Charles R. Drew and change the world!Hongera!Steve O. Michael, PhDExecutive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost5
