Speaker BiographyRuss Broome became managing director of the Society of Plastics Engineersin October 2014.He began his career in the plastics industry in 1994 on the manufacturing sideat multiple custom injection molding operations. This led to plastics designengineering roles at ABB, a global leader in electricity metering,communications and energy management platforms, in Raleigh, NC.In 2000, he was recruited to LNP Engineering Plastics, a custom compounderof engineered thermoplastics, in Exton, PA. He held roles in territory sales, aswell as product and industry marketing across the LNP brands. In 2008, hewas recruited to PolyOne, a global leader in specialty polymer solutions andservices, where he held roles in corporate key accounts and global businessdevelopment.Most recently, Mr. Broome was working for TE Connectivity, a leading global supplier of consumerelectronics, as a resins engineer sitting on their automotive procurement team. During these twenty yearsfocused on OEMs and resin suppliers, Broome also formed his own plastics company representing equipmentmanufactures as well as recruitment.Mr. Broome holds a degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC.He began his SPE membership in 1992 as a student and was elected President of the Society in 2011.Map of Firestone CCYou may zoom inPage 2

We have now completed the regular SPE technicalmeetings for 2014-15. Our Awards Night will be on Monday, May 18 at theFirestone Country Club in Akron and will feature Russell Broome, the new Managing Director of SPE, asthe guest speaker. His talk will be on “SPE: Mission Possible”. It will highlight all education and careeradvancement initiatives covered under the SPE mission for students and the next generation of plasticsengineering professionals.Russell joined SPE in 1992 as a student and was elected International SPE President in 2011. He becameManaging Director of the Society of Plastics Engineers in October 2014. He has held positions primarily insales and marketing with LNP Engineering Plastics and PolyOne Corporation and more recently he workedas a resins engineer for TE Connectivity a leading supplier of consumer electronics. He subsequently formedhis own plastics company representing equipment manufacturers as well as recruitment.Past Akron Section President Dan Jones will be recognizing the Akron Section for receiving the SPEPinnacle Gold Award and the Communications Excellence Award. This year’s recipient of the AkronSection Plastics Hall of Honor and the William C. Zecan Memorial Service Award will then be introduced.The Hall of Honor is awarded to an Akron area resident whose continued service and support has contributedto the growth of the plastic industry. The William C. Zecan Award is presented to a member of the AkronSection for outstanding long-term service to the Section. Our Education Committee chairman KevinCavicchi will then introduce our scholarship winners and their sponsors and the winners of the AkronSection Essay contest. Please come and join us for this auspicious ending to the 2014-15 SPE year.Your incoming President, Keith Pelfrey, has done a great job with Rik Keeley of the Cleveland Section inputting together a varied and topical technical program for the 2015-16 year. Councilor’s CornerCouncilor Update: SPE Councilors meeting at AntecGlobal membership growth continues to be a major concern and focus moving forward withspecial attention on increasing Student Chapter membership and involvement.Russell Broome is actively visiting sections and Universities around the country to help growStudent Chapter activity.New Executive Committee members were voted on and confirmed.Discussion: There was a break-out session to brainstorm “how we would like SPE structured asfar as Executive Committee and Councilors”– Reducing the size of the EC is being considered– Reducing the number of councilors is being considered – having regional councilorsversus every section.Bylaws were reviewed and updated.Page 4

Akron Section Society of Plastics Engineers Educational Foundation1-15The Akron Society of Plastics Engineers Educational Foundation operates exclusively for the benefit of andto carry out the purposes of the Akron Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers, which is to promotescientific and engineering knowledge relating to plastics by making educational scholarship grants todeserving students in the field of plastics engineering and related subjects. The Organization is supportedprimarily by contributions from the Akron Society of Plastics Engineers, the Society's individual membersand corporations like yours affiliated with the polymer industry.Since the inception in 1988, the Akron Society of Plastics Engineers Educational Foundation has grown to itscurrent position through the hard work of many volunteers and the generosity of the local businesscommunity. Over the twenty three years that the foundation has been in existence, it has providedscholarships to over 245 young men and women totaling in excess of 310,000 to assist them in furtheringtheir careers in the polymer industry.Our goal is to continue to grow the assets of the Foundation in order to increase the number of scholarshipsawarded, as well as the size of the awards, and to do so in perpetuity. In doing this, we hope to be able tocontribute to the supply of well-trained individuals to support the growth of the polymer industry in theNortheast Ohio area today and well into the future.When the Foundation began its fund raising activities in 1988, we offered those companies who contributed 30,000 a scholarship in their name. To date we have five named scholarships, Newell/Rubbermaid,Goodyear, Ken Sharp Memorial and Jim Steiner Memorial scholarships.
