HISTORYIn 1950 the purchase of some registered females started the Curracabark Stud for the breedingof bulls for its commercial herd followed by the sale of registered bulls in 1952 which followedon from some commercial bull sales prior to 1950.These were selected and overseen by at first H.T. Higgins and then his sons John & Jim until mid-1990and currently Sandy and James Higgins.Normally around 700 breeders and followers are run on the shale based ridges with modestrainfall and some challenging temperatures. Virtually all steers are sold as 400 - 500kg feeders andsurplus females sold as future breeders or MSA graded bodies.STUD BREEDING OBJECTIVES Increase beef producers profitability with more beef production from thick, growthy, softcattle with soundness and a calm temperament from an unassisted birth.Easy doing cattle suitable for grass and grain finishing.Large body capacity to thrive in tougher grazing conditions.Cow and bull longevity with sound legs, feet, udder and teat shape.Visible muscularity in forearm and hindquarter thickness, ribeye size and some width androundness of muscle along the spine.Careful use of only higher accuracy Breedplan data to produce a continual lift of progenystandards like IMF levels for improved eating quality.Careful sire selection with lots of research and annual travel to studs in 4 States inspectingup to 1000 bulls each year.Choosing sires with proven background genetics to breed a more reliable result for bullbuyers. Our approach has always been for a visually balanced type of cattle and careful use ofdata allows us to aim for balanced, no- holes genetic data. This is not an easy combinationbut good for the commercial producers’ pockets.Sale DetailsDataEBV data is printed as received from the breed societies. The vendor recommends visualappraisal of stock with the beneficial use of EBVs with accuracies over 50%. Index values are derived directly from EBVs and their percentage accuracies. index values havelower accuracies than EBVs. As more performance information becomes available on an animal(or its progeny, or relatives) then the accuracy of its EBV for particular traits will increase.SaleThe sale will be open cry auction in consecutive lots in conjunction with AuctionPlus online bidding. The auctioneer will deem the lot as sold and responsibility of the livestock passes to the purchaserat the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer.GSTPrices for all lots will be GST exclusive and so invoices for sales will have 10% GST added to theinvoice.InspectionSale cattle will be on display on the sale day from 10.30 a.m.CURRACABARK HEREFORDS & ANGUS SALE 2022 Page 2
