The Larry Murphy PageDunmanway August week-end charity run:Every year my good friend Donal O’Leary organises a car run usually to aidthe local hospital and Marymount Hospice in Cork City. What is unusualabout this run is that there is no club and no committee, just Donal, his wifeMary, daughter Ann and another friend of Donal’s. They do a huge amountof work and the only reward they seek is a good entry and to raise as muchmoney as possible for the charities and see everyone enjoy themselves. This year we were to travel from Dunmanway to Bantry, spend a fewhours in Bantry House and gardens and then return to Dunmanway via thePass Keimaneagh, Ballingeary and Inchigeela in time for a meal at 4.00pm.This of course is God’s own country.Every year entries number eighty to one hundred and it makes for avery enjoyable day out. However, like so many shows, displays and runsthis year the rain ruined the day, but did not dampen the spirits totally. Atthe end of the day over 8000 was raised. Well done Donal! and long mayyou have the health to do your good work and of course visit us in Galwayfor WestRun. Donal first came to WestRun twenty years ago with his wifeMary and only missed one year since, that was 2006 when his son’swedding day clashed with our event.Ford Model T Run:The 18th Annual Ford Model T Run was heldin Galway on August 11th and 12th. Thirty fiveModel Ts took part including one of the firstthree Squad cars purchased by the Irish FreeState for the Civic Guards. The car, picturedright, is currently owned by Garda PatO’Connor with registration number YI 4017.The organisers of the run were our own WilliamFennell and John Malone.8

Holidays Abroad – National Motor Museum,Beaulieu, Hampshire, EnglandFew car museums in the world can match the unique collection of the world renownedNational Motor Museum at Beaulieu. Managed by the National Motor Museum Trust,Beaulieu is also the home of the world famous Beaulieu International Autojumble andAutomart. Beaulieu is situated in the south of England, in the New Forest betweenBournemouth and Southampton, with easy access from London and the Home Counties. To get there from London, take the M3, then the M27westbound, exiting at Junction 2 on to the A326. Followthe brown and white tourist signs for either Beaulieu or theNational Motor Museum. The approximate travel timefrom London is 2 hours. The National Motor Museumevolved from the Montagu Motor Museum, founded byLord Montagu in 1952. It was originally conceived as atribute to British Motoring achievement and a memorial tohis father, John Scott Montagu, one of Britain’s motoringpioneers. The Collection comprises some 250 vehicles - from some of the earliest examples ofmotoring to legendary World Record Breakers like Bluebird and Golden Arrow, andtens of thousands of objects relating to motoring history. The latter includes caraccessories, motoring clothing, printed ephemera and anything else that helps todescribe the fascinating evolution of motoring in all its forms and the associated socialimplications.Motor Sport Section: Mounted on sweeping steel structures, star exhibits in theGallery include Britain's oldest complete racing car, the 1903 Napier, MichaelSchumacher's 1994 World Championship Benetton, Damon Hill's 1996 WorldChampionship Williams (not forgetting his father's 1967 Lotus 49) and the Vanwallwhich Stirling Moss drove to victory in 1958.Other marques to which the Gallery paystribute include McLaren, Ferrari, Jaguar and BRM. The display is appropriately flankedby the Museum's famous Land Speed Record Breakers; the first and last of Malcolm andDonald Campbell's Bluebirds, the 200mph Sunbeam and the 1929 Golden Arrow.Stars Cars: The most famous flying car, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is also on display. The car, star of one of the best loved family films of all time, is one of the museum'smost requested vehicles, from visitors of all ages. Other star cars on show within theexhibition include cars owned by music legends such as Eric Clapton, George Harrisonand Mark Knopfler. There are also cars once owned by or used by stars of the silverscreen including Marlene Dietrich, Mr Bean's Mini andContinued next page9

Continued from previous pageJack Tucker’s Garage: A permanent, multi award-winning 1930's garagehas been created within the Museum, complete down to the last nut and bolt andrusty drainpipe. Whilst the building is a complete fabrication, everything in it - allthe fixtures, fittings, tools and ephemera - are genuine artefacts collected over aperiod of 25 years. The garage portrays the transition from blacksmith andwheelwright to a country garage servicing the needs of the 1930's motorist.Visitors are able to experience the working of garages of this era and can learnmany interesting facts and trivia, such as why there were so many different petrolcompany’s pumps on the forecourt.AFFILIATED CLASSIC CAR CLUBS cont’d from page 6Rover Enthusiasts Club of IrelandMr. Ray Tracey, 170 Ballymun Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9.087 6334328Shandon Vintage Wheels SocietyMr. Kennedy O’Callaghan, Convent Road, Blackrock, Cork. 087 2351012Southern Volks Folks Owners ClubMr. Cormac Reddy, 646 Collins Avenue, Santry, Dublin 9.086 8343812Tipperary Light Car & Motorcycle ClubMr. Richard Slattery, Giants Grove, Clonmel, Co. SnippetsWestRun 2007:Once again, WestRun has come and gone. This year'sevent was very successful - this was due in no small wayto the effort and commitment of the organisingcommittee under the run director, Joe O’Neill. THE WVVMC CHARITY FUND by Sergio MagnettiThe end of 2007 is approaching very fast and the Charity fundcommittee has managed to raise about 12,000 for the year, not verymuch I must say but this year we did not have any major projects suchas the Porshe Speedster or the TR-6. However between what was leftover from last year and this year’s collection we managed to distribute 12,000 to very worthy local charities, such as Cancer Care West,Ábalta, Gort Cancer Care and the Crumlin Children’s Hospital and westill have enough money in the kitty to support our Mozambiqueproject which is going very well.In addition to helping these very worthy causes the charity fund projecthas created a new image for the club through exposure to the localmedia and to the national television network by appearing on ‘Nation–wide’ in 2005 and I am glad to say that we will be again on TV at thebeginning of October with our TR-6 restoration project and again on‘Nationwide’, at this stage I hope that the public will stop thinking thatwe are just a bunch of snobs that likes to show off their ‘expensive andover polished cars’.Now for the bad news, in 2008 most of the outgoing committee willresign and it seems that I will be the only one left in the ‘Charity Fund’committee and furthermore I have completely run out of ideas on howto raise money, is there anybody out there with a bit of a drive and‘ideas’ that would like to help with the continuation of this very worthyaspect of our club? Believe me it is not a full time job but it takes acertain amount of commitment and fresh ideas, I am appealing toanybody for help but in particular to the lady members, this is anoccasion to become an ‘active member’ of the club and no any longerjust a ‘classic car’ passenger. If you wish to help or even give us some new ideas on how to raisemoney, please contact me at 087-8142733 or E-mail me at SM@IOL.If you have any queries on Membership, please contact theMembership Director, Michael Spellman at 086-8210679.mpgspell@iol.ieThe fee for 2008 remains at 38.00 by Cash/Cheque or 32.00 by Direct Debit12
