For convenienceand to expedite the move-in process, allresidence halls will be open; half of incomingstudents will be assigned to move in onSaturday and half on Sunday. Check-inruns from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. each day.Students will be notified in mid-August asto which day they have been scheduled tomove in.Students who are unable to move in on theirscheduled day may move in any day aftertheir scheduled move-in day. Important Residence HallCalendar RemindersWill the residence halls be closedduring academic breaks?The residence halls close during winter breakand remain open during spring break. Duringwinter break, students are required to leave theresidence halls. They may leave belongings intheir rooms but items of value should not be left.During spring break, per the contract, the diningcommons are closed; no meals are servedduring spring break. Closure dates are listed athousing.ucdavis.edu/calendar.When do students move out at theend of the year?Students need to vacate the residence hallswithin 24 hours of their last final exam or by7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019, whichevercomes first. Students and their family membersshould make advance preparations to meet thedeadline.When may students start receivingmail and packages in the residencehalls?Mail and packages will be accepted beginningMonday, September 24. Students need to checktheir mailboxes soon after arriving for importantinformation regarding university events andactivities. Packages are delivered to the AreaService Desk of the area in which they live. TheStudent Housing and Dining Services automatedmail system will send an email notification tostudents who receive packages.Is it possible to tour residence hallrooms prior to moving in?Yes. Welcome Week programsin the residence halls include movie nights,community socials, late-night socials, academictransition workshops, the Fall Welcome Rally,the Involvement Fair, ice cream socials andtours of the computer centers, campus libraryand academic advising centers. All activities aregeared toward helping students meet others,learn about the campus, understand how to startout on the right foot academically and transitioninto the campus community. Students may visitfallwelcome.ucdavis.edu for campus eventsand, after moving in, may ask a resident advisor(RA) for details.Academic and First-YearExperience ProgramsWhat is the First-Year Experienceprogram?The First-Year Experience (FYE) programencompasses both the FYE peer advisingand the Residence Hall Advising Team (RHAT)programs. FYE advising coordinators andpeer advisors create a positive and seamlessacademic transition experience for new UC Davisstudents while helping students prepare for asuccessful academic career. FYE peer advisorsprovide academic guidance and support in theResidential Academic Advising Centers andduring academic programs in the residence hallsthroughout the academic year.1

What type of academic supportis available to residents livingwith Student Housing and DiningServices?Student Housing and Dining Services operatesAcademic Advising Centers in each of thethree housing areas. In these centers, studentshave access to the Residence Hall AdvisingTeam (RHAT) peer advisors, a Writing Specialist,tutoring and study space. Student Housingand Dining Services collaborates with thefour colleges and other campus departmentsto implement these services. In addition topeer advising, RHAT peers facilitate academicworkshops in the residence halls. Tutors whoare hired and trained by the Student AcademicSuccess Center offer tutoring in commonfirst-year subjects, such as math, chemistry, andwriting. The Academic Advising Centers areopen as a study space between 8:00 a.m. and11:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and fromnoon to 11:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. This isa great place for students to study, read, or workon group projects. For more information aboutthe academic support offered in the residencehalls, download the “New Student Guide” in theUC Davis Now app, or visit housing.ucdavis.edu/academics.How can students interact withfaculty in Student Housing and DiningServices?Student Housing and Dining Services providesvarious opportunities and activities for residentsto interact with faculty. Faculty are invited intothe residence halls and dining commons tointeract and build connections with residents.Examples of activities range from faculty game2nights to discussions on how to get involvedin research on campus. Stay up to date aboutfaculty programs in the residence hall bydownloading the “New Student Guide” in theUC Davis Now app, or visiting housing.ucdavis.edu/academics. Several of the living-learningcommunities also include for-credit, academicseminars or First-Year Aggie Connections heldin the residence halls and taught by faculty.Topics include health services, businessinnovation and leadership development andmore. In addition, UC Davis offers numerousfirst-year seminars with small faculty-to-studentratios during fall, winter and spring quarters.These one- or two-unit courses, limited to 15students per seminar, are an excellent wayfor students to experience close interactionwith faculty. Seminar topics are rooted infaculty member expertise and their individualpassions Residence Halls,Bedrooms, BathroomsDo students get to pick whichresidence hall they live in?Students may request the area in which theywould like to live but not the specific residencehall. Students will submit living preferences fortheir desired area, living environment, roomoccupancy and living-learning community in theirhousing application.Are there special interest, themedliving areas in the residence halls?Yes. Check out Aggie Abodes,an online video tour ofresidence hall rooms, athousing.ucdavis.edu/aggie-abodes.proud to offer special interest living-learningcommunities in the residence halls that areaffiliated with a variety of identity, academic,career, and subject matter based themes.Students participating in a living-learningcommunity often find their transition to theuniversity to be more fulfilling, supportive andsuccessful both academically and socially, whichcan lead to retention and increased persistenceto graduation. Living-learning communitiesprovide an opportunity for students withsimilar interests, goals, or experiences to livein the same hall or on the same floor, creatingan educational community that supports itsresidents. Living-learning communities allowstudents to enjoy unique learning activitiesrelated to their community’s theme as wellas more traditional, social, and recreationalopportunities that are driven by the participants,resulting in a dynamic resident supportedexperience each year. Most living-learningcommunities will include an optional one- ortwo-unit seminar or First-Year Aggie Connectionrelated to the theme, which are typically offeredduring the fall quarter. Students interested inchoosing a living-learning community shouldindicate their preference when filling out theonline housing application and can make edits totheir preference for a living-learning communityuntil August 5th. Students are not guaranteedhousing in a living-learning community, and aregiven consideration based upon the prioritythey assign to the community in their applicationrelative to other living preferences (gender andoccupancy; see housing.ucdavis.edu/apply/livingpreferences.asp) as well as random lotterynumber. If you are requesting a roommate, makesure you both/all preference the living-learningcommunity in your application. You can findthe full list of current communities at housing.ucdavis.edu/education/communities.Are there housing options in theresidence halls related to gender?Yes, there are! An all-female building andfemale-only floors are located in Tercero andSegundo. For questions or information relatedto transgender, gender-inclusive or other needs,students can contact Student Housing andDining Services at 530-752-2033.Can students be guaranteed a singleroom? How much is a single room?Single occupancy may be requested but cannotbe guaranteed. There are a limited number ofsingle rooms: only 170 out of 5,633 bed spacesare single-occupancy rooms. Not everyonewishing to have a single room will receive one. Ifa student has a special need requiring a singleroom, they can complete and submit a specialaccommodations form, available at housing.ucdavis.edu/publications, for consideration.Every effort will be made to accommodate anymedical concerns. Students can refer to theresidence hall fee schedule for specific roomrate information: housing.ucdavis.edu/fees.What type of exterior access systemis used in the residence halls?An electronic access system is used in theSegundo, Tercero and Cuarto areas. Theoutside doors of all residence hall buildings arelocked 24 hours per day. Students use theirAggieCard ID cards to enter their buildings and,depending on their hall system, use either theirAggieCard ID cards or a key to get into theirrooms. Safety and security are discussed at3

community development meetings held in eacharea. All residents are expected to attend thesemeetings.Which residence hall buildings haveelevators?All Student Housing and Dining Servicesbuildings have elevators except Regan Hall(Campo, Indio, Nova, Paloma, Rienda, Serenoand Talara buildings).How are rooms furnished in theresidence halls?Rooms are furnished with a bed frame, mattress,desk, desk chair, dresser, bookshelf and desklamp for each student. Each room has onewastepaper basket and recycling container.Students must bring their own bedding (pillow,sheets, mattress pad, bedspread) and towels,etc. Due to different bed sizes, Student Housingand Dining Services recommends waiting untilfinal room assignments are announced beforepurchasing sheets.Do students have control over thetemperature of their residence hallrooms?All bedrooms within the Student Housing andDining Services inventory have user-friendly,occupant-controlled thermostats. Thesethermostats allow adjustment during the coolingseason ranging between 72 and 84 Fahrenheitand during the heating season ranging between58 and 70 Fahrenheit.What are the bathrooms like in theresidence halls?In Bixby, Gilmore, Malcolm, Ryerson and ReganHalls, students share community bathrooms.Emerson and Thoreau Halls have bathrooms ineach suite: residents share bathrooms with theirsuitemates. Alder, Thompson, Miller, Kearney,Laben, Wall, Campbell, Potter, Pine, Scrub Oak,Currant, Live Oak, Sequoia, Mahogany, andHawthorn, Madrone, Cottonwood and RedwoodHalls have one bathroom with two showers andtwo toilets for every four or five bedrooms. Allbathrooms include showers with a curtain ordoor and towel racks or hooks to hang a wettowel. Not all residence halls have paper towelsso be sure to bring hand towels. Additionally,all bathrooms, with the exception of Emersonand Thoreau, have cubbies or lockers to storebelongings in.4Are there lockers or other storage inthe community bathrooms?Bixby, Gilmore, Ryerson and Malcolm Hallbathrooms have lockers. Alder, Thompson,Miller, Kearney, Laben, Wall, Potter, Campbell,Pine, Scrub Oak, Currant, Live Oak, Sequoia,Mahogany, Hawthorn, Madrone, Cottonwoodand Redwood Hall bathrooms do not havelockers but instead have “cubbies.” Thecommunity bathroom lockers found in selectbuildings are not assigned and students mustbring their own padlock.Are there laundry facilities in theresidence halls? What is the cost?Yes. Laundry facilities with card-operatedwashers and dryers are available in eachcommunity. Laundry machines accept credit and/or debit cards; they do not accept cash. Washcycles are 1.25 each. Dryer cycles are 1.00each.Can students have a refrigerator anda microwave in their rooms? What arethe options?Yes. One refrigerator and one microwave areallowed in each room. Refrigerators must beno larger than 4.5 cubic feet and no taller than35 inches. Microwaves must be 800 watts orless; Energy Star rated is preferred. They mustbe in good working order with defect-freecords that are grounded and approved byUnderwriters’ Laboratories (UL). Student safetyand residence hall electrical capacities are theprimary concerns related to the use of electricalappliances in the residence halls.Alternatively, students may rent a MicroFridge ,which is a combination refrigerator andmicrowave. Associated Students, University ofCalifornia, Davis (ASUCD) offers MicroFridge and refrigerator rentals that meet StudentHousing and Dining Services guidelines. StudentHousing and Dining Services recommends thatstudents discuss the purchase or rental of thisequipment with their roommates prior to makinga decision. Contact ASUCD at 530-752-1990or visit fridgerental.ucdavis.edu for moreinformation.What type of cleaning service isprovided?Student Housing and Dining Services providesfull custodial services for all public areas sevendays a week, which includes all communitybathrooms. However, residents are responsible

for keeping their rooms clean. Residentsliving in Cuarto will receive bathroom cleaningevery other week by the custodial staff.Environmentally friendly cleaning supplies,vacuum cleaners and toilet paper are availableat each Area Service Desk.community in the residence halls. Professionalstaff supervise the RAs and provide additionalstudent support. All staff members are availableto assist students whether their concern ishomesickness, academic schedules or how toget involved on campus.How do students request repairsor facilities-related service in theresidence halls?How does Student Housing andDining Services select roommatesand when do students get theseresults?Emergency requests, such as for a water leak,should be reported as soon as possible to theFacilities Service Desk at 530-752-8200 or theon-call resident advisor. For all other requests,students may submit a service request onlinethrough myucdavis. Log into myucdavis atmy.ucdavis.edu, go to the MyHousing tile, click“Submit a Service Request, and fill out the form.Be sure to include the exact location for serviceand describe the service needed. Service maybe requested for a bedroom or any area outsideof a bedroom, such as a lounge or bathroom.What types of hooks or nails maystudents use to hang pictures orposters?Students may use thumbtacks and push pins onsurfaces such as tack boards and tackable wallsurfaces. All rooms have tackable wall surfacesfor each resident. Regular nails and hooks maynot be used in the residence halls. Students mayuse poster putty or two-sided tape that is madeto not damage painted surfaces.Living in a CampusCommunityHow do students get to know othersin the residence halls?Students have many opportunities to get toknow others in the residence halls. A great wayto get to know people is by attending communitymeetings and Welcome Week activities. RAswill have information about these activities atmove-in. To learn more about what is happeningin the residence halls, visit the Student Housingand Dining Services calendar page at housing.ucdavis.edu/calendar.Are there staff available to assiststudents in the residence halls?Absolutely! A Resident Advisor (RA) lives in eachstudent community. RAs are trained to assistwith the transition into college and to developStudents may make roommate requests intheir housing application. Students who do notmake roommate requests will be randomlyassigned roommates based on each of thestudent’s living preferences. Student Housingand Dining Services does not use informationabout lifestyle, personal habits or culture whenassigning roommates. After room assignmentsare processed, Student Housing and DiningServices will send an email to all assignedstudents’ UC Davis email accounts. Studentsreceive their assignment information in August.Can friends room together? How?Yes. Students can request friends to be theirroommates. The deadline for making changesto the housing application, including requestingroommates, is August 5. To request roommates,use the “Roommate Request” button on thehousing assignment status pages. Studentsmust include proposed roommates’ namesand hometowns in their requests and ensurethey have selected identical living preferences(desired area, living environment, roomoccupancy and living-learning community). Mealplans do not need to match. Student Housingand Dining Services will make every attemptto honor roommate requests as long as therequests are mutual and living preferencesmatch. After the deadline, any requests mustbe submitted in writing to Student Housing andDining Services and are not guaranteed.How does Student Housing andDining Services address roommatedifficulties?At the beginning of fall quarter, the RAs meetwith roommates to discuss what behaviors areacceptable to everyone in the room. Having theRA facilitate open and honest communicationhelps roommates avoid problems. Roommatesare advised to discuss problems themselves asa first step toward resolution. The next step is tocontact the assigned RA for assistance.5

Students receive theirassignment informationin August. They havethe option of completinga transfer request untilAugust 31.Can students switch rooms beforemove-in and/or during the year?Students receive their assignment informationin August. Students who wish to live in aresidence hall or room other than the one inwhich they have been assigned may requesta room/residence hall transfer until August 31.After students have moved into their rooms,they will need to meet with an area coordinatorto request a transfer. Requests are subject toavailability of space and are not guaranteed.However, Student Housing and Dining Serviceswill try to honor all room transfer requests andwill notify students if their requests can beaccommodated.What services are available at theArea Service Desk?There are many services available at each AreaService Desk. Student Housing and DiningServices staff is available to help students anddirect them to the resources that they need. TheArea Service Desk is open weekdays from 8:00a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and weekends from noon to11:00 p.m. Some services available at the AreaService Desk are: Fix faulty access cardsGive out temporary access cardsHelp students submit service requestsReceive and administer mail and packagesEquipment checkoutProvide general customer service andresources to residents and visitorsHow is Student Housing and DiningServices integrating sustainablepractices into its operations in theresidence halls?UC Davis Student Housing and Dining Servicesis committed to sustainable practices andeducating the campus community aboutsustainability. available online at housing.ucdavis.edu/capitalprojects.What is the best way to get aroundcampus?Bicycling is the fastest and most popular wayto get around campus and the city of Davis.Walking is the other main way to get aroundcampus. Cars are not allowed into centralcampus.The Bike Barn is a full service repair shoplocated in the center of campus. The Bike Barnperforms general bike repair and maintenanceand offers rentals and merchandise sales.Aggie Bike Buy is the Bike Barn’s onlinebicycle purchasing program for the UC Daviscommunity. Visit bikebarn.ucdavis.edu/bikebuyto learn more about the program and to order anew bike.Is there a convenient and safe way toget around campus at night?Yes. Safe Ride Services is a free programprovided by the UC Davis Police Department toanyone at UC Davis who prefers an alternativeto walking alone at night. Those who use theservice are given a ride in a clearly markedsecurity vehicle or escorted on foot by an AggieHost Security Officer. Safe Ride Services may berequested from mobile devices with the TapRideapp (iOS and Android) or by calling 530-754COPS (2677). For more information, includinghours of operation and to download TapRide,visit police.ucdavis.edu and click “Safe RideServices”.How do students register their bikes?All bikes on the UC Davis campus must have acurrent California bicycle license. New licensesare 12 and renewals are 6. Licenses are validfor up to 3 years. Bike licenses are availableat the Transportation Services office, Mondaythrough Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.Most new students license their bicycles duringWelcome Week. From Monday through Friday ofWelcome Week, licenses will only be availableoutside and in front of the TransportationServices building. For instance, studentswho go home regularly on the weekends mightchoose a different meal plan than students whoplan to eat on campus every day.May students change their meal planduring the year?Yes, meal plan changes can be made onlineat my.ucdavis.edu or in person at the StudentHousing and Dining Services office. Studentsmay change their meal plans only during specificmeal change periods each quarter. Refer to theStudent Housing and Dining Services calendar(housing.ucdavis.edu/calendar) for specificmeal change period dates. Only students canchange their meal plans; family members cannotmake any changes.What is Aggie Cash?The Residential Computer Support (RCS)program and website is a great place to start.The RCS program encompasses the residencehall Computer Centers, online HelpDesk, directsupport services provided by our studentResidential Computing Advisors (RCAs), andonline information, instructions and links tocampus computing resources. Please visit theResidential Computing website at housing.ucdavis.edu/computers.Can students bring their computers?Yes. UC Davis expects students to have theirown computers; Energy Star-rated productsare preferred. Information regarding computerrecommendations and Internet access can befound on the Residential Computing website.For added convenience, Computer Centers arelocated in each residence hall area, providingcomputer and printer access for all residents.Will students have an Internetconnection in the residence halls?Yes. All residents have either a high-speed wiredconnection through ResNet, the ResidentialNetwork, or a high-speed wireless connectionthrough Eduroam, the campus wireless network.Students should visit the Residential Computingwebsite for information about how to preparebefore they arrive including getting connected,Aggie Cash is a declining balance (debit)account that students, faculty and staff use topurchase food and beverages at UC DavisDining Services locations on campus.UC Davis computer recommendations, andcomputer security. First-year students can alsoregister laptops at Orientation.Aggie Cash holders make purchases using theirAggieCard photo ID, similar to using a bankdebit card. Aggie Cash makes dining outsidethe dining commons cash-free and convenient.Transactions are deducted from the Aggie Cashaccount.Yes. The UC Davis eduroam wireless networkservice is available in the residence hall areasand throughout campus.Students living in the residence hallsautomatically receive 200 of Aggie Casheach quarter with their meal plan. Visitaggiecash.ucdavis.edu for more information.8Is wireless computing available in theresidence halls?What is safe and appropriatecomputing?Safe computing means taking appropriate stepsto secure and maintain a computer and avoidingpractices that make a computer vulnerableto virus infection and hackers. StudentHousing and Dining Services recommends thefollowing: configure Windows or Mac systemsto automatically update with current critical

software patches, avoid peer-topeer (P2P) file-sharing applications,turn off file sharing, configure anduse a built-in firewall and installanti-virus software. ResidentialComputing Advisors can assiststudents with configuring computersto university standards.Does the university provideanti-virus software?The university requires all computersconnecting to its campus networksto have anti-virus software installed.If a computer already has anti-virussoftware installed, no further action isrequired. Otherwise, Student Housingand Dining Services recommendsinstalling one of the free anti-virussoftware packages (available for bothMac and Windows).
