Among its provisions,the STOP School Violence Act of 2018 authorizes the Department of Justice to manage grantprograms that support states, local governments and federally recognized Indian tribes to preventand reduce school violence.The STOP School Violence Act also authorized the Office of Justice Programs and theOffice of Community Oriented Policing Services to develop grant programs that provide fundingto enhance school safety. These funds are used to develop or improve school safety projects,such as enhancing school threat assessment efforts, as well as to implement technologicalsolutions that improve reporting of suspicious activity in and around schools. This program alsohelps states create and enhance State School Safety Centers.This year, OJP’s Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded nearly 53 million via threeseparate funding opportunities required through the Act, while COPS awarded nearly 32.5million through its School Violence Prevention Program.BJA’s STOP School Violence Technology and Threat Assessment Solutions for Safer SchoolsProgram ( 29.5 million)BJA awarded 68 local governments, federally recognized Indian tribes and publicagencies nearly 29.5 million to directly help schools by providing school administrators, staff,students and first responders with the ability to use threat assessments, crisis intervention teams,and anonymous reporting technology.
