WelcomeWelcome to Western International UniversityWestern International University is a private university with some very uniquecharacteristics. The majority of our students are working adults who thrive onthe strength of our educational programs while appreciating the flexibility andconvenience of our course schedules and services. Courses are available duringthe evenings and on weekends, allowing students to continue to work and raisetheir families while completing their degree programs. Our two-month sessionsallow students to accelerate their programs to the extent that they are capable ofhandling their own workloads. The University has developed excellent relationshipswith local employers, providing opportunities for their employees to attend WIUcourses at a number of corporate and municipal sites across the region.We strive to have a diverse, multi-cultural student population. Significantportions of our students have come to WIU from more than 40 differentcountries. Many of these students attend the university to learn English throughour English as a Second Language (ESL) program prior to starting theircoursework in degree programs. They recognize that, throughout the world, anaccredited American degree is a valuable commodity. Services are provided tosupport these students while they learn English and become acclimated to ourenvironment and culture.WIU faculty hold advanced degrees in their teaching fields and are also highlysuccessful practitioners in their areas of expertise. While our course schedulesmay be “non-traditional” in form, our educational model and teaching style canbe considered more “traditional”. Faculty share their knowledge throughlectures, presentations and class discussions. Students have the opportunityto demonstrate their achievements through individual quizzes, tests, papers,projects, and presentations.Global and technology issues are key themes throughout the WIU curriculum inall degree programs. Many of our faculty have international business experience.The international flavor of our student body provides ample opportunity toidentify with and observe many cultures. Western International UniversityWestern International University (WIU) was founded in 1978as a private, non-profit institution and regionally accreditedin 1980. In 1995, WIU was acquired by Apollo Group, Inc.and became a for-profit subsidiary of one of the leadingeducational corporations in the United States. WIU isheadquartered in Arizona, the Grand Canyon State.WIU’s main campus, in northwest Phoenix, is convenientlylocated adjacent to the Black Canyon Highway. A secondPhoenix metro area campus is situated in the East Valleysuburb of Chandler, and our most recent Arizona campus islocated in Scottsdale, Arizona. This new WIUimplementation takes advantage of the latest technology andblends our superb teaching approach to enable students tostudy and complete the AAB degree in less than two years. Inthis innovative teaching model, students take two classes inparallel for nine weeks, logging in to attend class at times mostconvenient to their schedule. AdmissionWestern International University (WIU) welcomes applicationsfrom all students qualified to achieve the University’s educationalgoals without regard to gender, race, creed, age, disability,national origin, or religious belief.Since coursework at WIU begins monthly, applicationsand registrations are accepted on an ongoing basis. Earlysubmission is encouraged to allow sufficient time to processapplication materials. International students should begin theprocess well in advance of intended start date. A minimum ofthree months is recommended.Students must complete all application requirements beforebeing considered for admitted status. All students applyingfor admission to the University have the responsibility ofsubmitting a complete and accurate application packageincluding all academic and professional credentials required.Applications to the University are considered current for 12months from the date of submission. Admission requirementsmust be met within 12 months of application date. Should thisnot occur, students will be notified in writing and must reapplyto continue the admission process.Special consideration is given to applicants who are activeservice members or reservists called to active duty.Western International University recognizes, for admissionand transfer credit purposes, only coursework attempted andcredit earned at regionally accredited (or equivalent) collegesand universities.As a service to students, the WIU Admissions Office acceptsthe responsibility of obtaining transcripts from previouslyattended institutions. However, should another institutionrefuse to release a student’s records, the student will be notifiedand must assume responsibility for obtaining documentationrequired for admission.Degree-Seeking StudentsUniversity applicants pursuing Associate, Bachelor, or Masterdegrees at WIU are considered degree-seeking students.Students applying for financial aid must be accepted forenrollment as degree or certificate seeking students prior tofinancial aid being processed. Students having completed a WIUapplication and granted provisional status are considered eligiblefor enrollment. International students on WIU-issued studentvisas must be admitted as degree-seeking. The four types ofadmission to degree programs - Registered, Conditional,Provisional, and Admitted - are explained on page 7.Associate Degree AdmissionEligibilityAll applicants must meet the following requirements to beconsidered for admission to the University: High school graduation or equivalent from an institutionthat is regionally accredited and/or state licensed.5 Western International UniversityNOTE: In certain circumstances, a transfer Associatedegree from a regionally accredited institution may beaccepted in lieu of a high school diploma. United States (U.S.) citizenship or appropriate legal statusallowing University enrollment.StandardsAll students who have presented qualifications meeting theabove eligibility requirements will be granted provisionaladmission to the Associate of Arts in Business degreeprogram. Upon successful completion (2.0 or better gpa) ofthree courses, students will be granted admitted status.Those students who have completed 12 or more college-levelsemester credits with a cumulative gpa of 2.0 or those studentswho have less than 12 college-level semester credits, but haveachieved a high school gpa of 2.5, are eligible for admittedstatus upon receipt and review of all academic credentials andprior to completion of three WIU courses.Students from countries where English is not the officiallanguage must demonstrate English language proficiency (See page 10).ProceduresCandidates for Admission must: Submit a completed and signed WIU Application forAdmission listing secondary and all postsecondaryinstitutions attended. Applicants under the age of 18 musthave the signature of a parent or legal guardian. Pay non-refundable application fee. Sign request form(s) for official transcripts from allpreviously attended colleges, universities, and nationaltesting agencies. Students relying on foreign transcripts foradmission must provide official academic records fromall institutions attended outside the U.S. Students whoserecords are on administrative hold at another institutionmust resolve the issues and provide the required documentsto WIU.NOTE: Applicants with fewer than 12 graded semestercredits of college level work from a regionally accreditedpostsecondary institution must sign a request for highschool transcripts or GED documentation.Bachelor Degree AdmissionEligibilityAll applicants must meet the following requirements to beconsidered for admission to the University: High school graduation or equivalent from an institution
