General InformationHistoryPhilosophyThe Alvin Community College District was approved by the qualifiedvoters of the Alvin Independent School District on November2, 1948. From its inception until the 1971-72 academic year, theCollege was administered by officials of the Alvin IndependentSchool District. The 1971-72 academic year marked the beginningof a new era in the history of Alvin Community College. A separateadministration, tax district, and college board were establishedto assume the management, control, and operation of a newlycreated Alvin Junior College District. We believe in the dignity and worth of all individuals. Learning is alifelong process, and all individuals should have opportunities forlifelong education. Education should help people develop, to theirmaximum capacity, technical excellence, occupational proficiency, and academic ability. Education should also provide for personalenrichment. To prosper in a complex and changing society, each individual must learn to think independently, value logicaland tested conclusions, develop problem-solving abilities, andfunction effectively with other people. Competent performancecontributes significantly to individual health and happiness andbenefits the organizations and communities in which individualswork and live. Alvin Community College is an integral part of thecommunity it serves, and it must respond to identified needs andinterests. In delivering educational services, we believe that thereis no substitute for the pursuit of excellence.By a vote of both the original district and voters of adjoiningterritories, the college district was enlarged to nearly twice itsgeographical size in 1974. Then, in the spring of 1975, an 8million bond issue was approved, providing funds for the facilitiesnecessary to meet an expanding enrollment. In 1998 the Collegeexpanded into its service area with the establishment of thePearland Center in the former C.J. Harris Elementary School inPearland. The Pearland Center was closed in 2013 and the campuswas sold in 2016.In 2005, a 19.9 million dollar bond issue was approved, providingfunds for a new science/health science building to meet the needsof expanding health programs, to provide relief for overcrowdedclassrooms, and to update technology and simulation labs.Mission StatementAlvin Community College exists to improvethe lives of its constituents by providingaffordable, accessible, high quality andinnovative academic, technical and culturaleducational opportunities for the diversecommunities it serves.Vision StatementAs a premier college that provides high-qualityacademic, technical and cultural programs,Alvin Community College’s focus will be topromote student success, enhance quality of lifeand support economic development.General InformationInitially, when the College and public schools were in the samesystem, the College was part of Alvin High School.
