Faculty Award RecipientsThe Class of 2021 presented the following awards to outstanding medical school faculty:Jade Woodcock, MAPrashant Patel, DOJoseph Prahlow, MDMichelle Peterson, MDOutstanding Basic Science EducatorFoundations of MedicineOutstanding Clinical Science EducatorClinical FacultyOutstanding Clinical Science EducatorFoundations of MedicineOutstanding Clinical Science EducatorResident PhysicianMelissa Olken, MD, PhDOutstanding Clinical Science EducatorClerkship DirectorCOMMENCEMENT TRADITIONSIn planning our virtual commencement, we wanted to maintain academic traditions, including the academic regalia worn by our speakers. While we are not all together inthe traditional apparel, we want to recognize the robes, hoods, and tams originating inmedieval Europe.ACADEMIC REGALIAToday’s academic regalia—the robes, hoods, and tams—originated in medieval Europe. In 1895, representatives of America’s leading academic institutions adopted a codeof academic dress. The code regulates the cut, style, and materials of the gowns, andprescribes colors to represent different fields of learning. Today, with few exceptions, the academic robes are black and the colors of the hood reflect the field of learning andacademic institution. At WMed for the medical degree, the gown is faced with blackvelvet; three bars of velvet are used across the sleeves. The hood is hunter green with achevron of brown and gold. For master of science degrees, the gown has long swoopingsleeves, and the hood is science gold with a chevron of brown and gold. All graduateswear a brown tassel with a WMed Medallion.WMED SEAL AND MEDALLIONThe institutional seal, a symbol of Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D.School of Medicine, is one of an academic institution’s most important symbols. Servingas the legal mark of the institution, the seal is used to authenticate official documentssuch as diplomas. The WMed seal includes the institutional name and two elements ofthe logo—the W and the Rod of Asclepius. The medallion is three inches in diameter, crafted with antique brass, and reveals the institutional seal. The medallion is at thecenter of a brass necklace which is a permanent part of the dean’s academic regalia, andis worn at formal ceremonial events.THE MACEThe ceremonial mace is used to lead the academic procession at commencement andother special ceremonial occasions, signifying the importance of the event and theconformation of the academic process. The 42-inch mace is made of natural walnut andis topped with a 4-inch antique brass medallion of the institutional seal.WELCOME ALUMNIWhile the annual Awards and Alumni banquet was not able to be held, graduates of theClass of 2021 are welcomed as medical school alumni by the Office of Development andAlumni Affairs, which plays a key role in keeping alumni involved in the growth of themedical school and celebrating continuing successes. Class OathThe oath of Hippocrates is a symbol of the medical profession and perhaps the most widely known of Greek medical texts. The Hippocratic Oath requires a new physician to swear upon the healing gods that he or she will uphold professionalethical standards. Over the centuries, it has been rewritten often to suit the values of different cultures that have beeninfluenced by Greek medicine. A medical oath declares the ethos of medicine, and includes solemn promises that identifythe covenant relationship between physicians, other healthcare providers, patients, and society as a whole. During thevery first weeks of medical school, medical students in the Class of 2021 created their own class oath which enabled thestudents to reflect on the principles they feel are important to embrace as medical professionals. By writing their ownwords, the oath created the foundation for their medical education and medical career.CLASS OF 2021 MEDICAL STUDENT OATHIn recognition of the honor and privilege of being a member of the Western Michigan UniversityHomer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine Class of 2021, I devote myself to the practice of medicine andsolemnly swear the following oath:I pledge to adhere to and abide by a standard worthy of my peers, the school, thecommunity, and the medical profession.I pledge to respect patient autonomy, and to collaborate in creating patient-centered,humanistic care.I pledge to uphold the bonds of trust between myself and my patient.I pledge to educate and empower patients to be advocates of their own health.I pledge to advance the frontiers of medical knowledge with the goal of continuousimprovement of patient care.I pledge to resist the vices of arrogance, apathy, and avarice.I shall do no harm.I pledge to demonstrate humility by recognizing my own limitations, and to look to myinter-professional team for guidance.I pledge to serve all patients and be vigilant in the service of those who are most vulnerable.I pledge to establish and maintain an inclusive environment that welcomes individuals ofall communities and identities.I pledge to extend my advocacy beyond the clinic to the community as a whole, withdeference to the privilege our position affords.I pledge to devote myself to the alleviation of human suffering.Above all, I commit to a life of service. We pledge this oath individually and collectively.WMed 2021 · Page 6
