ESTABLISH A RELATIONSHIPWITH A VETERINARIANYour commitment to your pet starts by making an appointment for a veterinary examination.Local veterinarians support that commitment by donating a free health examination with eachadoption. A veterinarian can assess your animal’s specific healthcare needs and answer questions.The free examination does not include any additional tests, vaccinations, medications ortreatments. Here is a list of some tests and preventative measures that may be recommended: FeLV/FIV Testing for Cats –Feline Leukemia Virus and FelineImmunodeficiency Virus are infectiousdiseases that can be easily transmittedbetween cats. Cats may or may notshow signs of illness, so it is importantto have them tested in order todetermine if your cat carries one ofthese viruses. Heartworm Test and Preventative –Heartworm disease is transmitted bymosquitoes and is most common inareas close to bodies of water duringwarmer months. Incidence of thisdisease is lower in Colorado comparedto other areas of the country. However,if contracted, this disease can lead to alife-threatening illness in your pet. Flea and Tick Preventative –Protecting your pet from fleas andticks is vital to your pet’s overallhealth, as fleas and ticks cantransmit disease. Additional Vaccinations – Pleasetalk to your veterinarian regardingadditional vaccinations or boosters.Recommendations will vary based onyour pet’s age and lifestyle. Fecal Examination – Your new pethas been de-wormed for roundworms.However, we recommend that youhave a stool sample evaluated forother internal parasites, such asCoccidia, Tapeworms or Giardia. Geriatric Care – If you adopted anolder animal, please consult with yourveterinarian about a special diet, labwork, and dental care. Older animalshave special needs and require morefrequent veterinary attention toensure all their needs are being met.Accidents can happen.Having a veterinarian that knows youranimal could save your pet’s life.
