Learning the language of the navyA/SLt Ron MacDougallBPAO TraineeBeing new to the navy myself, it’s amazingto listen to seasoned sailors as they speakto each other in an almost secret language, which the British and Canadian Navies havedubbed jackspeak. After scanning the web and various literature on the subject, I realized there arehundreds, if not thousands of jackspeak termsand phrases; just as the oceans are vast so arethe possibilities for further development andwidespread usage of jackspeak.“Any group that is somewhat isolated frommainstream society can develop their ownslang as part of building group identity,”said Dr. Judith Nylvek, Instructor at theDepartment of Linguistics, University ofVictoria. This development is clearly seen in jackspeak. In the navy, it’s bulkhead, deck and overhead and not wall, floor, and ceiling. Theexecutive officer is called the jimmy, and akillick is a leading seaman. In the mess (dining room), the sailors eat food prepared inthe galley (kitchen) and love their navy gravy(ketchup). If the sailor is jagged (tired), he may wantto catch some rack time (sleep) in his rack(bunk). Or he may listen to scuttle-butt(gossip), skylark (joke around) with his wingers (friends) or hear a salty-dip (exaggeratedstory) from a jack (young sailor putting onairs). Or perhaps there is some dhobey (laundry) to do whereby dhobey dust (laundrydetergent) is needed. Some terms are logical when the originsare closely reviewed. For example, many arefamiliar with a ship’s bathroom being called“the head”, but they don’t know it originatesfrom a time when sailing ship crews relievedthemselves all the way forward on either sideof the bowsprit, the integral part of the hullto which the figurehead was fastened, that is,at the head of the ship. The permanent usage of some phrasesYour Community Partner. To discuss our Integrated Relocation Program(IRP), contact:Mark Phillips, Mobile Mortgage Specialist,250-818-9650 Registered trade-marks of Bank of Montreal.into mainstream society “is simply a result ofsocial integration,” Dr. Nylvek states. “Whena sailor comes back home, he’ll use expressions that are effective, catchy and funny forthe listener.”Many phrases and terms may be used bymainstream society without the speaker evenknowing their origins. Jackspeak often permeates into mainstream English. The phrase, asthe crow flies, now understood as the shortestdistance between two geographical points, originated from when a ship, being lost orunsure of their position in coastal waters, would release a caged crow that would thenfly towards the nearest land, thus giving thevessel some sort of a navigational fix.Even the phrase, feeling blue comes fromthe custom of flying blue flags and having ablue band (representing higher British society) along the entire hull of a ship returningto home port when the captain or any officerperished at sea.Sailors all over the world use jackspeak, theslang derived from their work and life at sea.10% offany TruckRateMILITARYDISCOUNTOFFEREDCall 250-953-5300www.budgetvictoria.com
