Activities Held In Our Newest Campus BuildingTuesday, August 23, 2016 1:45 PMAll-School Ice Cream Social and Ribbon-Cutting CelebrationKrill Construction provided lots and lots of ice cream to the entire school on a beautiful, sunny afternoon to celebrate the grandopening of Kemper Science and Engineering. John and Betty Kemper earned big cheers from the students and hugs from their sixLake Ridge Academy grandchildren as President Klimas told the excited audience about how their creative ideas and scientificsolutions might solve some of the world’s biggest challenges one day. To help mark the occasion for years to come, Karen(Kemper) Kastelic provided a time capsule in which hundreds of student-submitted science predictions will be stored until theschool’s 75th anniversary in 2038. Then, science got “super fun and silly” as students participated in age-appropriate scienceactivities and challenges in the quad. The entire school convenes in front of Kemper Science and Engineering.Fourth grade students make “elephant’s toothpaste,” a chemical reactionexperiment.Mr. Patrick Smith, Institute of Scientific Research Director and Upper Schoolbiology teacher, shows kindergarteners how to replant outside of thegreenhouse.9

TODD MORRISON, ENGINEERING & AUTO CAD TEACHERThere is a lot of “new” happeningin our recently opened KemperScience and Engineering! Thebuilding is home to one of ournewest faculty members, Mr.Todd Morrison. Mr. Morrisontook on a brand new position asan engineering and Auto CADteacher in the Upper School whilesupporting the entire K-12curriculum related to the NavratilEngineering Fab Lab.Mr. Morrison is a civil engineer with ten years of experienceworking at private engineering firms and municipalengineering departments. He has designed many differenttypes of projects including bridge rehabs, waterlines, roads, sewers, geotechnical analysis, and green infrastructure likebioswales and rain gardens. Mr. Morrison had an earlyinterest in engineering recalling, “I built my first computeraround the age of 13. I began at Ohio State with a focus incomputer engineering and wanted to become aprogrammer, but I eventually changed my major to civilengineering. My dad, now retired, owned and operated anexcavation company. So I’ve spent most of my life aroundconstruction, and it seemed like a natural fit since I alreadyknew a lot about this kind of work. I find that I enjoyexploring new technologies and developing new ideas to fixold problems.”Lake Ridge Academy is a place where Mr. Morrison is veryhappy to dive into new technologies as a teacher and helpstudents to innovate and solve problems. He finds manythings about our school unique and exciting compared tohis small, rural public high school. The Navratil EngineeringFab Lab is a cutting-edge space, and the entire Lake RidgeAcademy community is excited to discover what ourstudents design and produce within it. And, Mr. Morrison isready to take on the challenge to show us what is possible.11

DEDICATION CEREMONYOn Thursday, August 25, over 100 KemperScience and Engineering benefactors joined50th Anniversary Campaign donors and 1963Society members at a private party toexperience the new facility first-hand andcelebrate their important contributions. Kemper Science and Engineering DonorsSupporting the first new building at Lake Ridge Academy in more than a decade, donors made gifts totalingmore than 3 million for Kemper Science and Engineering. In keeping with the school’s strong fiscal mandate,25% of every gift was directed to an endowment fund to reduce the additional operating strain and helpmaintain the building going forward. In addition to outright building gifts from more than 100 families, otherdonors provided gifts of equipment and supported Gift from the Heart at the 2015 Auction Gala to fundadditional equipment needs for the expanded engineering workshop and technology for the building.NAMED BUILDING SPACESKemper Science and EngineeringJohn W.
