2020MISSOURICOMPLAINT REPORTSTATISTICS SECTION
The Missouri Department of Commerce & Insurance (DCI) investigates complaints made by Missouriconsumers who feel they have been treated unfairly by an insurance company. This report presents data oncomplaints against insurance companies received by DCI between 2018 and 2020. Three years of complaintsare pooled for each report to ensure that data are statistically credible. All complaints are included, regardlessof how the complaint was resolved.Complaint data are presented in four sections: Complaints by line of businessComplaints by reasonComplaint indices reported for the top 40 writers by line of businessComplaint indices for all companies, by line of businessSeven business lines are included: Private passenger automobileHomeowners (including farm, mobile home, and personal fire and allied lines)Life and annuityAccident and healthLong term careMedicare supplementHMOsComplaint indices compare the ratio of complaints to premium for each company to the industry average, foreach line of business:Company complaintsCompany premium*100Industry-wide complaintsIndustry-wide premiumAn index of 100 indicates that a company received complaints at a rate equal to the industry average. An indexof 10 indicates that a company’s complaint ratio is only 10 percent of the industry average, while an index of235 indicates a complaint ratio is 135 percent greater than the industry average. Indices are capped at 9,999.
