She has contributed to betterunderstanding on the pathophysiology, treatment options andawareness of peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM), a globaldisease particularly prevalent in African populations.She leads several inter-Africa research projects, which havehad a major impact for creating knowledge about CVDscommon in Africa, leading to changes in policy.Professor Karen Silwa(Speaker)Professor Julian Gillmore(Speaker)Professor Julian Gillmore undertook MD and PhD degrees inthe field of amyloidosis. His research interests includepathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of amyloidosis. He wasappointed Centre Head at UCL’s Centre for Amyloidosis &Acute Phase Proteins in 2019 and is research lead at the UKNational Amyloidosis Centre. Hestudied Medicine in Heidelberg, Lille, Georgetown, andMünster. After graduating, Professor Kirchhof learned andpracticed cardiology at the University Hospital Münster andworked in Birmingham from 2011 until moving to Hamburg in2020. Professor Kirchhof researches translational mechanismsand management of cardiovascular diseases, especiallyarrhythmias and heart failure. He is a highly cited researcher, anenthusiastic teacher and a mentor for cardiologists andcardiovascular researchers.

He qualified at WitsMedical School. His interest in Cardiac Electrophysiology (EP),arrythmias and cardiac pacing in began 1969 while workingwith Dr Pro Obel. He moved to Groote Schuur Hospital in 1984to develop EP there until retirement in 2006, since when hehas continued to teach ECGs to undergraduates andpostgraduates. He has an extensive library of high-quality ECGsbuilt up over the past 40years and in 2015 published “The ECGAtlas of Cardiac Arrhythmias” containing 100 examples of fullsize 12 lead ECGs with explanatory text.
