The Last WordPresident’s ReportRain at last . but!So, people who live and workin the outback (ie. most ofQueensland, and most ofAustralia) are used to dry times –it’s always been thus. And they’rea resilient breed. But it cannot bedenied that the drought of the lastfour years has been devastating. This has been officially declaredthe most widespread ever, withmore than 86% of Queenslandstill drought-declared as at 1.gifThe extent of the dry can be seenin the 41-month rainfall recordstarting October 2012.For more information go to:www.bom.gov.au/climate/drought/The recent rains are a welcomedblessing, but the drought won’tend until there’s lots more followup rain, and just as we are headingback into the dryer part of theyear. This drought has broken manyrecords, and does anyone stilldoubt that mankind has createdfrightening impacts on our world?New MembersJames Douglas Crichton (1955)Ian Allison Maddock (1965)Geoffrey Thomas McIntyre (1965)Keith Gerard Pembleton (1965)Kenneth Scott (1965)Ronald John Woodhead (1965)Peter Bernard Bevan (1969)Dennis Randall Barber (1970)Geoffrey Bruce Faulkner (1970)Ross Anthony West (1970)Neville George Christianos (1975)Ross Ernest Dodds (1975)Mark Austin Hohenhaus (1978)Meredith Anne Lawley (1981)Lynette Susan Butler (1985)Donald Robert Cherry (1985)Christopher Love (1985)Kathryn Margaret Reilly (1985)Gregory Edward Taylor (1985)Peter Michael Stevens (1995)Linden John Charles (2005)2Re-Connect, Winter 2016Gary MasonPresidentUQ Gatton Past Students’ AssociationInc.Phone: 0459 340 118Email: masogwj@bigpond.net.auIt is indeed an honour and a privilege tohave been elected your president at therecent AGM held during the Back to CollegeWeekend in December. I wish to thankall those who have sent or given me theircongratulations on this achievement. The December get-together was anothergreat success with emphasis on the yearsending in 5, and excelling in their efforts toreturn to Gatton were the 1965 group, manyof whom had not seen each other in half alifetime. This year, again the first weekend inDecember, the feature years will be for thosewho finished their study in the years endingin 6, eg. 1956, 1966, 1976 through to 2006.Get on the phone, email, fax, facebook orwhatever communications method and getyour year to become involved, start now andlock in that first weekend in December.Since being elected I have attended tworeunions, namely at the Gold Coast andCaloundra, and I thank Peter Douglas andPeter Jacobson respectively for organisingthese events.Which leads me to the question ofmembership of the UQ Gatton Past Students’Association and I guess it has been anongoing thing for many years as to howdo we encourage the younger graduates tobecome members.Attending these two reunions brought homethe message that we are an ageing group andif we fail to replenish the stock then we, asan Association may not exist in the years tocome. With the changing demographics of thestudent population, mostly due to thetransfer of the School of Veterinary Sciencefrom St Lucia to Gatton, the number ofstudents studying at Gatton has increaseddramatically. This is reflected in the on-campusaccommodation sign showing “full”.Many of you, who have access toemail, would have recently received themembership survey to complete, which isan attempt to quantify the direction in whichwe should go to increase our membership. The results to date indicate a response ofabout 21% which is regarded as quite goodwhen it comes to surveys. Some of the feedback for becoming a member includes 78%believing the main benefits were catchingup with old friends; 69% want a regularnewsletter; 93% want updates on memberswhile 74% said they wanted informationabout upcoming events. We are yet to have a final analysis ofthe survey, which will occur at our nextmanagement committee meeting, and youwill be updated on where and what weintend to do on growing our membership. Our recent “first” newsletter was anoverwhelming success with considerablepositive feedback on its initiative, content, and why was it not thought of sooner. Againwe will appraise the feedback and decidewhether we continue with it, rememberingthat this type of exercise always requiressomeone to volunteer their time. I might addthat the newsletter is in addition toRe-Connect.I would also like to congratulate andacknowledge Bill Benjamin, Clifton andWally Taylor, Rockhampton on receiving theMedal of the Order of Australia in the 2016Australia Day awards honours list. You will also find in this edition theprofiles of our latest UQ Gatton GoldMedal awardee, Paul Sattler OAM, and therecipients of the Distinguished Past Studentaward, being Bill Palmer, Peter Forster andChris Bazley. All of these awards are now open fornominations with the details available onour Association website.Do we have your email address? If you are reading a hard copy of thisedition of Re-Connect, it means that we donot have your email address. UQ-GVEC Director Mr MarkPace advised we needed to review the durationof the current Diploma program and bring itin line with other educational offerings. Themajority of Agricultural Degrees offered todayvia Universities are 3 year programs and not 4years, as was the case when 2 year Diplomaswere awarded. A revision of the Diploma wastherefore required (ie. the 1 year proposal). The new revised Diploma will attainthe testamur ‘Diploma in AgriculturalTechnologies’ and incorporate moreprogressive approaches towards Agriculturaleducation including; Controlled Traffic Farming; Precision Agriculture; Biosecurity; Global Positioning Systems. The proposed program revisions are underwaywith the new modules under development andto be in place by late 2016 for new enrolmentsto commence in 2017.For further information please contact theUQ-GVEC Director Mr Mark Pace.Email: m.pace@uq.edu.au

My wife and I wanted the chefsand all the people in the dining room tobe complimented for an excellent spread.Ross Murray did a great job on thecampus tour. I wished that the day wasa lot longer – so many people to talk toand reminisce with. Anyway, it was allgreat.”“Thank you to you and your committeefor organising an enjoyable reunion andstay at QAC. The accommodation wasexcellent. I would say that very few paststudents from any institution other thanQAC would be able to stay on campuswith their wives and partners. Also if theOld Boys printed the record of penalties,it would be a top seller.”“We sure did have a great weekend andthank you very much for all the workbehind the scene. The Association hasdone wonderful work with the Collegehistory under old Shelton.UQ Gatton Past Students’ Association Inc.5

Branch ReunionsGold Coast ReunionPam and Jack Groenendyk and Patty Smith withCheryl and Charlie TeasdaleOur 27th Reunion Lunch on 6 February waswell attended by 49 members and spouses. The ever popular seafood spread, combinedwith the very attractive cost is still a drawcard. Twenty four apologies were received.Branch President Peter Douglas announcedthe recent passing of Geoff Dancer who wasa regular attendee of our branch reunions.First time attendee George Miller (1960–62) withAlan Flegler (1956–1958)Special guests included UQGPSA PresidentGary Mason, Past Presidents Bob Jamesand Graham McClymont, our HonouredOld Boy Clive Gilchrist 1934–38, 1999 UQGatton Gold Medallist Jim Miller, 2011Distinguished Past Student Ray O'Gradyand wife Moya together with AssociationHonorary Life Members Val Kilah (Whip)and Julie Reid (Stark).Sunshine Coast ReunionThis year’s Caloundra reunion attractedover sixty past students and familymembers. Fourteen apologies werereceived. The Caloundra Bowls Club againmade us welcome, providing a comfortablespace for our get together. We are indebtedto Barry Bendixen and Frank Natoli, who, years ago, arranged this venue for theCaloundra reunion.Jim Wright 1955–57, Peter Douglas, RichardMunt 1952–56The attendance of committee membersof the Past Students’ Association wasappreciated. For supporting our branch, thank you Kim Jorgensen, Bruce Birtwell,John Guthrie, Gary Mason and GrahamMcClymont and Phil Long.A special thank you goes out to Peter andDiana Douglas. As well as organisingthe Gold Coast reunion, they support ourbranch through their yearly attendance.Sadly missed was Jack Burchill, whopassed away last November. Jack was apost-war Diploma student who made stockinspection his career, for his entire workinglife. Jack knew Queensland’s pastoralholdings and geography intimately. Hisstory telling was never self-promoting butimparted insights into rural society and thesubtleties of cattle and the bush.Odette and Tony Linedale (1959–61),Brian Cull 1954–56 (standing)6Re-Connect, Winter 2016As noted for other branch reunions, paststudent participation is mostly from theDiploma era. Perhaps reconnection, by ayounger generation, is a matter of time. The yearly Back to College Weekend canonly improve interest. Also, networkingamongst our ex-College friends is a work inprogress. We were pleased to welcome first timersLouise McCreath 2004–07 and GeorgeMiller 1960–62.It is extremely hard to attract students fromthe post Diploma era. If one considers thatthe Diploma courses finished in 1968, itmakes the youngest of the diplomates about65 years of age. They will be an endangeredspecies in 20 years. Food for thought.A unanimous decision was reached that theGold Coast Branch of the UQGPSA donate 1,000 to the PSA Scholarship Fund. Acheque has been forwarded to the Secretary.Peter Douglas would like to give a bigthank you as always to Diana and to GeorgeHannaford for their assistance at the doorand to Darryl Edwards and Bob James forconducting the Raffle.Ray Montgomery, as both a past studentand teacher, is a wealth of knowledge aboutCollege history. As usual, Monty suppliedsome written memorabilia, which did therounds of the gathering. We thank Ray, forsharing both his loyalty to the Associationand his love for all things good about thatplace at Lawes siding. One issue, explained by Jack Drane, concerned the College’s Penalty Book. One school of thinking suggests greatinterest in publishing the Penalty Book, which recorded the many peccadillos andmisbehaviours of restless youth. Its printingcould also be a fundraiser. Opposing thisview is the opinion that printing names ofmiscreants could be embarrassing to some.Testing the support from our gathering,Jack then suggested that the possibility ofsuch a publishing be followed up by theCommittee.Thank you all who attended and made thisa memorable and happy gathering.Ken (1963–65) and Robyn Webster, Don Gordon(1963–65)
