There, we givestudents real-world opportunities and experience;they create commissioned works of art and design forclients and community partners.Your Story: Latino Youth Summit.” This first-of-its-kind summerprogram provided young adults with opportunities for culturalexpression—for telling their personal narratives and connectingwith others—to decrease symptoms of depression and to fosterresiliency. The summit was followed by monthly meetings foryouths and their parents to continue learning from the program.For instance, while she was at Herron, JoannaTanaskovich ’12 was selected to develop a featuresculpture for the Avenue, one of BuckinghamCompanies’ downtown Indianapolis neighborhoods.Her playful, interactive sculpture perfectly captures theheritage of the area and, at the same time, embodiesthe Basile Center’s commitment to innovation,discovery, entrepreneurship, and collaboration.Innovative programs like this equip Herron students withdirect experience in our communities, enabling them to takethe knowledge and perspectives they’ve gained in the classroomand have a meaningful effect in the lives of people near and far.Visual Communication Design students have partneredwith colleagues at the IU Fairbanks School of PublicHealth at IUPUI to create a program called “Your Life,However, staffing and administering these programs requiressubstantial funding from the school—beyond what is committedto sustaining our galleries, visiting artists, and other forms ofcommunity engagement. Yasmine Kasem ’15 is an American-Egyptian sculptor,seen at left with her piece El Qamesha El Wahida (TheLonely Cloth), which earned her the 2015 OutstandingStudent Achievement in Contemporary Sculptureaward. This work explores the perceptions of womenin the Middle East and the West and the issues theyshare. Through her art, she is opening up cross-culturaldialogues about social stigma and confronting the heavyburdens placed on women, such as those related toappearance and sexuality.It’s perspectives like Kasem’s that we look to promoteby facilitating study-abroad programs and bringinginternational thought leaders to campus. These are keyavenues by which our students can gain cultural fluencyand competency.
