2013 Short Course SeriesDescription: Coal preparation has become anessential step in preparing coals for both domesticand export markets. As such, it is important formine managers to understand the purpose, function and limitations of these facilities. Thisfour-day short course describes the operationalfeatures of the processing equipment andpractices used in coal preparation. Thepresentations provide background informationthat describes (i) why coal preparation isnecessary, (ii) methods for determining coalcleanability, and (iii) what types of plant layoutsare required. Specific topics to be covered in theworkshop include sizing operations (screens, sieves and classifying cyclones), cleaningoperations (dense medium separators, waterbased separators, and froth flotation), and dewatering operations (centrifugal dryers, screenbowlcentrifuges, vacuum filters, belt presses, and thickeners). For each topic, suggested operatingpractices are provided for equipment operation and maintenance.Registration: The registration fee is as follows:Corporate Members sending 5 or moreindividuals 1295CPSA Members 1395Non-members(includes a 1-year CPSA membership) 1495The fee includes course notes, coffee breaks and lunches. (1982)and Ph.D. (1986) degrees in mining and minerals engineering from Virginia Tech. His expertise lies in the areas of separation technologies for the mineral and coalindustries as well as pioneering new fields of technology in the environmentallyclean processing of mined materials.Dr. Luttrell has 18 patents, many of which are in commercial use. His patentsaddress three important industrial problems in mining: fine particle flotation, coarseparticle flotation, and fine particle dewatering. He has completed projects worth over 14 million, obtained 15 process patents and authored more than 150 scholarly publications in journals andproceedings, as well as more than 180 technical reports. His research has contributed to the developmentof innovative technologies for coal preparation and mineral processing.Dr. Luttrell was recently elected into the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highestprofessional distinctions accorded to an engineer. He holds numerous awards, to include the AmericanInstitute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers' Nicholls and Aplan awards, the PittsburghCoal Mining Institute of America's Stephen McCann Educational Excellence Award and is a recipient ofthe Robert H. Richards award.
