5th Sunday of Easter:John 3:31-35Jesus has a heavenly origin and is above all (3:31). John 3:31: “He whocomes from above is above all, he who is of the earth is from the earthand speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.”Something toThink AboutOne who let’s slip by the opportunity toserve another, misses one of the richestexperiences life has to offer. –Pali TextIt is not enough to have power. Powermust be used to protect freedom and giveall people hope for the opportunity to seethe fruit of their own labor. –Jesse HelmsGood question. How often I have fished all night and caught nothing! Whathappening then? Talk with Jesus about this.John seems to be commenting on Jesus’words to Nicodemus (3:11-13): “Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what weknow and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony. IfI told you earthly things and you do notbelieve, how will you believe if I tell youheavenly things? No one has ascendedinto heaven, but He who descendedfrom heaven: the Son of Man.”John is repeating the point that Jesus’existence did not begin when He wasborn to the virgin Mary. The eternalWord became flesh and dwelt amongus (John 1:14). Jesus came to this earthfrom heaven, where He dwelt eternallywith the Father. Through the virgin birthJesus took on human flesh so that Hecould bear the penalty for our sins. Butnow He is again exalted on high, “aboveall,” a point that John repeats twice foremphasis (some manuscripts omit thesecond repetition, but it is probablyoriginal).John is not the only apostle to affirmthat Jesus is now above all. In Ephesians1:20-22a, Paul says that after God raisedJesus from the dead, He seated Him “atHis right hand in the heavenly places, farabove all rule and authority and powerand dominion, and every name that isnamed, not only in this age but also inthe one to come. And He put all things insubjection under His feet .” The apostlePeter affirms (1 Pet. 3:22) that Jesus “isat the right hand of God, having gone intoheaven, after angels and authorities andpowers had been subjected to Him.” And,the author of Hebrews spends the entirefirst chapter of that letter asserting thatJesus, the Creator of all things, is over allthe angels. In our text (3:31) John contrasts Jesuswith John the Baptist, “who is of theearth, is from the earth and speaksof the earth.” He is not nullifying thetestimony of John, but rather pointingout its limitations by contrasting it withthe superior testimony of Jesus. WhileJohn the Baptist was a faithful witnessof all that God entrusted to him, hewas nonetheless human. He only had alimited understanding of the things ofGod, as all humans do to one extent oranother. But Jesus dwelt eternally withthe Father (17:5). Because Jesus cameto earth from heaven and is now backin heaven, exalted above all others, wemust believe everything that He has toldus about God and heavenly things. The most extraordinary thing about theoyster is this. Irritation gets into hisshell. He does not like them. But whenhe cannot get rid of them, he uses theirritation to do the loveliest thing anoyster ever has a chance to do. If thereare irritations in our lives today, there isone prescription: make a pearl. It mayhave to be a pearl of patience, but makea pearl. –Harry Emerson FosdickMy philosophy on life is that it’s up to youto make it happen. If you sit back andwait for it, it will never come to you. –TimDriverThe future is somethingwhich everyonereaches at the rate of60 minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is. –C.S.LewisThere is a fine difference of perspectivebetween getting involved and beingcommitted. In a ham and egg breakfast, the chicken is involved, but the pig iscommitted. –John-Allen PriceA JokeAn elderly couple sat in church Sundayafter Sunday with the woman holdingher husband’s hand. When askedabout it, the woman said, “It’s not somuch love. I’m just trying to keep himfrom cracking his knuckles.”
