A statute of 1312required that all doctors, licentiates andbachelors of the University of Coimbra,Italy, wear gowns. The shape and size ofthe American hood marks the collegedegree of the wearer. It is possible torecognize the college or universityfrom which the degree was obtained byidentifying the colors on the center ofthe hood. Gowns for bachelor’s degreeholders have pointed sleeves and are wornclosed. Gowns for master’s degree holdershave elongated sleeves, while doctoralgowns have velvet striping on the sleevesand down the front.Hoods from National University ofNatural Medicine are green and whitefor all degree programs. Dual-degreerecipients wear the hood of the doctoraldegree and a gold cord in recognition oftheir master’s degree. Twoweeks after graduation, she moved to Chicago andspent the next eight years working as a professionaltheatre actor. After the birth of their daughter, Stevieand her husband Andy — also an actor—wantedmore stability for their little family. Stevie hadalways loved the ever-growing, ever-changing fieldof nutrition and had been eyeing NUNM’s nutritionprogram. She decided it was time to move her familyacross the country to pursue another dream. Thesepast two years have been some of the most rewardingand challenging years of Stevie’s life. She can’t waitto see what’s next.Daphne Kauahi’ilani Jenkins-Holbrook followedher intuition to NUNM’s nutrition program whilecompleting a Masters of Education in Curriculumand Instruction with a concentration in AdolescentLiteracy at Concordia University in 2018. Sherealized that the subject she cared the most aboutwas food! NUNM provided Daphne with theinspiration and the space to thoroughly exploreher passion for food, art and social justice. Beingin a community with faculty and classmates in thenutrition program has fed her—mind, body andsoul. Since the age of four, Sarah knew she wantedto pursue medicine and the healing arts. Tribal medicine,and the notion that healing emerges when we are incommunion with nature and each other, inspired her topursue natural medicine. Prior to enrolling at NUNM,she led several volunteer trips to Nicaragua and volunteeredat the University of Maryland Shock Trauma.
