LETTER FROM THE CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTORIn 2016, HVO marked its 30th anniversary, and launched plans for itsfirst symposium early in 2017. Such a milestone is certainly somethingto celebrate, but the anniversary year is also a time to reflect on yearsof experience and lessons learned. HVO has grown from one discipline(orthopaedics) to sixteen. Volunteers currently serve in 92 projects across 28countries around the world. In 2016, 388 volunteers shared their skills andknowledge in 410 completed assignments. Those assignments ranged in lengthfrom a week to several months, and many of the volunteers continued to returnto the same project site year after year, to assist with the changing needs asprojects evolved.Just as HVO has grown and evolved over the years so, too, have the needsin global health care. Patients presenting in resource-scarce countries arenow more likely to have non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer) than the infectious diseases that once dominated the globalhealth field. These are diseases that cannot be treated with a vaccine, or ashort-term dose of medicine. Instead, they require a long-term commitment onthe part of the patient and the local health care system. Building the capacityof health care systems, through the training and education of health careprofessionals, is the core of HVO’s mission. In this anniversary year, HVO is strengthening its commitment to globalhealth care. Our “Grow 30 More” fund was launched, as a way to expand ourreach and ensure that more health care professionals can be trained. Wewelcomed new sponsors and partners and offered scholarship and fellowshipopportunities for professionals at our sites and for volunteers.BOARD OF DIRECTORSPamela BensonEmily Berry, MDIn private practiceHelen Cherrett, MAAmerican Dental AssociationPeter Curran, MD, FACPin private practiceSusan Eitel, PT, MAEdEitel Global, LLCRichard C. Improving Health CareTogetherWhen two differentcountries can shareand collaborate with each otherin a professional manner, the worldbecomes a better place to live in. Thecross cultural experience is priceless. As ahealth care provider, it is always rewardingto make someone else’s life a little bit better. Most of our patients improved and werevery appreciative for our help. By teachingthe techniques to the staff physios, we feltconfident that their new skills could helptheir patient populations’ dysfunctions.A healthy world can bring muchhappiness to all!!- Patricia McIntosh, BS, PTAPhysical Therapy Vietnam3

Educating Tomorrow’s Global Health LeadersTTogetherhis course helped meto improve my clinicalreasoning, and to appreciate how hardI have been working to satisfy my clients, butit also helped me to see and analyze why somecases do take a long time. This is not due to lackof materials/equipment that we [always list first as apriority need] but a lack of thinking about why our clientsbehave/present the way they do.It also helped me to analyze myself and seehow much I only deal with symptoms and notthe patient as a whole, and do not include thefamily during my therapy. By doing this I givemyself a hard time and [there is no carryoverof therapy] during the time the client is athome. For this I decided to include parentsin my goal settings so that we can worktogether and team up for good results.- Inès Musabyemariya (Wyss Scholar)Kigali, Rwanda9
