IntroductionvIntroductionIn 1958 Toru Kumon founded the Kumon Institute of Education. Kumon is a math andreading program intended to supplement rather than replace school lessons. Students donot work together as a class, but progress through the curriculum at their own pace,moving on to the next level when they have achieved mastery of the previous level.Students are guided by trainedKumon Instructors and Assistants.At Kumon, the math and readingprograms help children of all agesand levels become eager,independent self-learners. Unliketutoring sessions, Kumon helpschildren learn how to learn on their own, and develops strong academic skills. Ourstudents gain a sense of confidence that will help them in the classroom and beyond.Kumon’s motto is there is “Success at any age and any level.”Handbook OverviewThe Kumon Employee Handbook, has been developed to provide generalguidelines about Kumon policies and procedures for employees. It is a guide toassist you in becoming familiar with some of the privileges and obligations ofyour employment. None of the policies or guidelines in the Handbook is intendedto give rise to contractual rights or obligations, or to be understood as a guaranteeof employment for any specific period of time, or any specific type of work.Kumon will provide each individual a copy of this Handbook upon employment.All employees are expected to abide by it. The highest standards of personal andprofessional ethics and behavior are expected of all Kumon employees. Further,Kumon expects each employee to display good judgment, diplomacy and courtesyin their professional relationships with members of Kumonʹs Board of Directors,committees, membership, staff, and the general public.

Chapter 13Federal Rules and RequirementsEMPLOYEE RECEIPT AND ACCEPTANCEI hereby acknowledge receiving the Kumon Employee Handbook. I understandthat it is my continuing responsibility to read and know its contents. I also understand andagree that the Employee Handbook is not an employment contract or any specific period ofemployment or for continuing or long‐term employment. Therefore, I acknowledge andunderstand that unless I have a written employment agreement with Kumon that providesotherwise, I have the right to resign from my employment with Kumon at any time with orwith or without cause, and that Kumon has the right to terminate my employment at any timewith or without notice and with or without cause. I have read, understand and agree to all ofthe above. I have also read and understand the Kumon Employee Handbook. I agree to returnthe Employee Handbook upon termination of my employment.SignaturePrint NameDateCONFIDENTIALITY POLICY AND PLEDGEAny information that an employee learns about Kumon, or its members or donors, as a resultof working for Kumon that is not otherwise publicly available constitutes confidentialinformation. Employees may not disclose confidential information to anyone who is notemployed by Kumon or to other persons employed by Kumon. The disclosure, distribution,electronic transmission or copying of Kumon’s confidential information is prohibited. Anyemployee who discloses confidential Kumon information will be subject to disciplinaryaction (including possible separation), even if they do not actually benefit from the disclosureof such information. To that end, the Board ofDirectors and Executive Director of Kumon will not discriminate against anyemployee or applicant in a manner that violates the law. Kumon is committed toproviding equal opportunity for all employees and applicants without regard torace, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, sexual orientation,disability, political affiliation, personal appearance, or any other characteristicprotected under federal, state or local law. Kumon’s policy regarding equalemployment opportunity applies to all aspects of employment, includingrecruitment, hiring, job assignments, promotions, working conditions, etc. TheExecutive Director shall act as the responsible agent in the full implementation ofthe Equal Employment Opportunity policy.Kumon will not tolerate any form of unlawful discrimination. All employees areexpected to cooperate fully in implementing this policy. In particular, anyemployee who believes that any other employee of Kumon may have violated theEqual Employment Opportunity Policy should report the possible violation to theExecutive Director. If Kumon determines that a violation of this policy hasoccurred, it will take appropriate disciplinary action against the offending party.Kumon is also committed to complying fully with applicable disabilitydiscrimination laws, and ensuring that equal opportunity in employment exists atKumon for qualified persons with disabilities. All employment practices andactivities are conducted on a non‐discriminatory basis. Reasonableaccommodations will be available to all qualified disabled employees, uponrequest, so long as the potential accommodation does not create an unduehardship on Kumon. Employees who believe that they may require anaccommodation should discuss these needs with the Executive Director.

Chapter 15If you have any question regarding this policy, please contact the ExecutiveDirector, or their designee.Policy against Workplace HarassmentKumon is committed to providing a work environment for all employees that isfree from sexual harassment and other types of discriminatory harassment.Employees are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and toshow respect for their co‐workers. Kumon’s commitment begins with therecognition and acknowledgment that sexual harassment and other types ofdiscriminatory harassment are, of course, unlawful.To reinforce this commitment, Kumon has developed a policy against harassmentand a reporting procedure for employees who have been subjected to or witnessedharassment. This policy applies to all work‐related settings and activities, whetherinside or outside the workplace, and includes business trips and business‐relatedsocial events. Kumon’s policy against harassment covers employees and otherindividuals who have a relationship with Kumon which enables Kumon exercisesome control over the individual’s conduct in places and activities that relate toKumon’s work.If Kumon determines that a violation of this policy has occurred, it will takeappropriate disciplinary action against the offending party, which can includecounseling, warnings, suspensions, and termination. Employees who reportviolations of this policy and employees who cooperate with investigations intoalleged violations of this policy will not be subject to retaliation. Uponcompletion of the investigation, Kumon will inform the employee who made thecomplaint of the results of the investigation.

6Kumon Employee ManualCompliance with this policy is a condition of each employee’s employment.Employees are encouraged to raise any questions or concerns about this policy orabout possible discriminatory harassment with the Executive Director.Employee SolicitationEmployees are prohibited from soliciting (personally or via electronic mail) formembership, pledges, the collection of money or for any other unauthorizedpurpose anywhere on Kumon property during work time, especially those of apartisan or political nature. “Work time” includes time spent in actualperformance of job duties but does not include lunch periods or breaks.Non‐working employees may not solicit or distribute to working employees.Persons who are not employed by Kumon may not solicit or distribute literatureon Kumon’s premises at any time for any reason.Employees are prohibited from distributing, circulating or posting (on bulletinboards, refrigerators, walls, etc.) literature, petitions or other materials at any timefor any purpose without the prior approval of the Executive Director or his/herdesignee.If there are any questions about this policy, please contact he Executive Director,or his/her designee.

Chapter 29Kumon EmploymentDefinition of Terms1. Employer. The Kumon is the employer of all full‐time, part‐time and temporaryemployees. An employee is hired, provided compensation and applicable benefits,and has his or her work directed and evaluated by Kumon.2. Full‐Time Employee. A Full Time Employee regularly works at least 35 hours perweek3. Part‐Time Employee. A Part Time Employee regularly works less than 35 hoursper week but no less than 17 ½ hours per week4. Temporary Employee. An individual employed, either on a full‐time or‐time basis,for a specific period of time less than six months.Hours of WorkThe normal work week for Kumon consist of five (5), seven (7) hour days.Ordinarily, work hours are from 3:30 p.m.- 8:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday,and Saturday – 9:30a.m.- 12:00p.m. Employees may request the opportunity tovary their work schedules (within employer‐defined limits) to betteraccommodate personal responsibilities. Work assignments as well as hours ofemployment that best suits the needs of the work to be done by the individualemployee; are determined by the facility director.Attendance and Punctuality Attendance is a key factor in your job performance. Punctuality and regularattendance are expected of all employees. Excessive absences (whether excusedor unexcused), tardiness or leaving early is unacceptable. If you are absent for anyreason or plan to arrive late or leave early, you must notify your supervisor as farin advance as possible and no later than one hour before the start of yourscheduled work day. In the event of an emergency, you must notify yoursupervisor as soon as possible.

10Kumon Employee ManualFor all absences extending longer than one day, you must telephone yourimmediate supervisor prior to the start of each scheduled workday. Whenreporting an absence, you should indicate the nature of the problem causing yourabsence and your expected return‐to‐work date.Excessive absences, tardiness or leaving early will be grounds for discipline up toand including termination. Depending on the circumstances, including theemployee’s length of employment, Kumon may counsel employees prior totermination for excessive absences, tardiness or leaving early.Working OvertimeOvertime pay, which is applicable only to Non‐Exempt Employees, is for anytime worked in excess in a work
