The BeginningOVERVIEW“Twas built by the toil of our fathers:To its glory our voices swell.Hail to old Fort Hays State!”This is our Heritage: This Is Fort Hays StateFort Hays State University (FHSU) is a state, taxassisted liberal and applied arts university establishedand maintained by the state to serve the people ofKansas. The university was established to satisfy a need felt bythe early settlers for educational facilities in the newregion. Martin Allen, a horticulturist who came to Haysin 1873, and other Hays residents, conceived the idea ofusing the Fort Hays Military Reservation land, about tobe abandoned by the government, for experimental andeducational purposes. The fort was abandoned in 1889. From that time until1900, the proposal for its use was repeatedly presentedto Congress by farseeing residents of the area. In 1900the federal government enacted legislation grantingthe land to the state of Kansas for a state college, anagricultural experimental station, and a state park. In1901 the Kansas legislature accepted the grant. On June 23, 1902, the university opened with 34students, two faculty members, and 19 courses. Fortwo years, sessions were held in two old buildings onthe fort grounds. In 1904, the first stone building wascompleted on the “flats” adjacent to Hays and the younginstitution was moved to its present location.1The university opened as the Western Branch of theKansas Normal School of Emporia. The curriculum forthe first two years consisted of the upper two years of highschool supplemented by courses in teaching methods. After 1910, the first degree, A.B. in Education, wasauthorized at this time, although the degree was laterchanged to B.S. in Education. Liberal arts degrees ofA.B. and B.S. were authorized in 1930. Graduate workleading to the master’s degree was first offered in 1929;in 1958 the university was given permission to grant thespecialist in education degree.During its years of educational service, the universityhas had several changes in its name. In 1914, the HaysNormal was made independent of the Emporia NormalSchool and its name became Fort Hays Kansas StateNormal School. In 1923, the name of the universitywas changed to Kansas State Teachers College of Hays. The right to confer liberal arts degrees was approved bythe Board of Regents early in 1931 and the legislatureauthorized the change to the name of Fort Hays KansasState College in the same year. In 1977, the name of theuniversity was changed to Fort Hays State University.FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY110th COMMENCEMENT
