W.U. Forest Resources CollegeAccession No. 70-1InventoryGuideThese records are primarily those of Hugo Winkenwerder, Dean, 1912-45.Other Forest Resources Deans represented include Frank G. Miller, 1908-12;Dwight S. Jeffers, acting, 1933-34; Gordon D. Marckworth, 1945-64. OtherCollege faculty members are also represented in the general correspondenceseries. In general, the records are a mixture of the public records of theCollege and the personal papers of the Deans.Winkenwerder actively sought to influence logging and forest resourcespolicy in the state, serving wfth numerous civic planning bodies, includingthe Seattle Chamber of Commerce, Washington State Forestry Conference,Washington. Planning Counctl, Washington. Forestry Board, and U.S. PacificNorthwest Regional Plannlng Commiss·ion. The concerns of the logging industryare particularly well represented in the Washington State Forestry Conferencerecords, since the Conference served as a legislative lobby for the industry. In educational matters College faculty members were most concerned withthe development of forestry research and professional and educational standardsfor foresters. These interests are reflected in several of the subgroups(Society of American Foresters, Western Forestry Schools Executive Council,U.S. Forest Research Council of the Pacific Northwest, U.S. National ResearchCoundl. Forestry Committee), as wel 1 as i n the general correspondence series, particularly in correspondence with vartous forestry schools and with the U.S.Forest Service. The general correspondence series also [nclude many letters wtthstudents and alumni, often detallfng working conditions In Forest Servlceposts or loggfng camps. Originally many of the letters in the correspondenceseries were interfiled in the folders for each individual year. The presentarrangement was arrived at by cons·i·stently separating the letters lnto thecategodes found sporadically (established for some years, but not others)throughout Winkenwerder's tenure. Correspondence with Forest Serviceexecutives is filed under "U.S. Forest Servi'ce. 11 Correspondence withfield personnel - mostly students and alumni - is flied under the nameof the correspondent. The 1'U.S. Forest Servi cell f i 1es from 1932 to 194 7remain largely unprocessed and thus may contain letters from other series,e.g., employment, publications, etc., though U.S. Forest Research Councilrecords were removed to that subgroup.Correspondence with forefgn governments and forestry schools fs presentin th general correspondence, though more substantive reports on foreignforestry conditions and practtces are to be found in student and alumniletters. For example1J Kenneth Pearce and C.S. Martin report from lndia,Horacio Recart from Chile and LeRoy Huntington from the Phflfpplnes. Fora list of alumni in foreign countries, see General Correspondence t,"Palmroth, Wi 11 iam G. 11 ; 1930.

/IW.U. Forest Resources CollegeGuidePage 2While much of the General Correspondence II I series seems routine, many of the letters are nevertheless of value. Many of the replies to"Applicants" contain Winkenwerder's thoughts on forestry as a profession, the employment outlook, the value of certain courses, and prospects forwomen students, etc. "Employment" includes letters with students andalumni seeking jobs and with prospective employers - logging companiesand, particularly during the depression, federal agencies. "Inquiries''includes correspondence concerning experiments and tests the Collegecarried out for lumber companfes and government agencies (including, forexample, the Canadian Munitions Board during WWI).There is virtually no correspondence from 1942 to 1944. The 1947correspondence appears to be only a partial sample of that year. One carton of grade books, student records and registration forms,ca. 1907-47, was discarded, July 3, 1980.Throughout this inventory Chambers of Commerce have been enteredunder the community name rather than under the "Chamber of Commerce" prefixas normally called for by the corporate entry rules. For example "SeattleChamber of Commerce" i·s used i·nstead of "Chamber of Commerce. Seattle.''
