Technology-enabled courses in D2LNSCC will use D2L for allcourses by September 2017This guide shows howto navigate D2L and usePeopleSoft Queries to seehow faculty and studentsare doing with using D2L.2

ARE YOU NEW TO D2L?You may want to start by viewing these two videos. They willintroduce you to NSCC’s D2L and show you a few things before youstart to look at your facultys’ courses. Take a Tour using NSCC’s D2L Explore Commonly used Tools3

STEP 1Get a list of the courses your faculty are teachingusing Peoplesoft.Log onto PeopleSoft and usePeopleSoft QueryNS SR 417 INSTRUCTR SCHEDIt lists the courses a faculty isteaching for a term.Enter these prompts:%INSTI1171%4

HOW ARE YOUR FACULTY DOINGWith meeting NSCC’s minimum requirements?If your faculty need help building courses to meet minimum requirements they can: Use the guide, Build Your Technology-Enabled Course Use the self-paced video, Build Your Technology-Enabled Course Submit a Service Desk ticketNOTE: Early fall there will be a report available with easy to use metrics onfaculty usage of D2L. It will be able to let you know how faculty are using D2Lfor each of their courses.13

HOW ARE YOUR FACULTY DOINGWith using content in a manner that follows the Copyright Act?Copyright rights and responsibilities apply to faculty’s use of D2L. They have the same educations users’rights teaching in D2L that they have in the physical classroom; and the same responsibilities to use contentin a manner that meets the conditions set in NSCC Policies and the Copyright Act.Click NSCC D2L & Copyright for a one-pager on copyright at NSCC.If your faculty are not sure if copied content qualifies as fair dealing or as an educational use exception inthe Copyright Act or is posted under a permission or license agreement, they can: Use Copyright Decision Tool Ask Campus Librarian to review course(s) Contact the Copyright Office at copyright@nscc.ca14

A query wascreated in PeopleSoft to report on this data.Login to PeopleSoft and navigate to the Query Viewer and enter NS D2L 002 ASSN AND GRADESSeveral prompts are required:TERM: Enter the term to search, it can be either the fall, winter, spring or year long term.FOR EXAMPLE: 1168, 1171, 1175, 1169.CAMPUS: Use the campus abbreviation, e.g. Insti, Water, Truro.DO NOT LEAVE THIS FIELD BLANK.INSTRUCTOR: If you wish to view all instructors use % otherwise enter the 7 digit emplid.DO NOT LEAVE THIS FIELD BLANK.FINAL GRADES: To view only the Final grade, or current final grade, for a class enter Y. A COUPLE OF THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOWA. Academic Chair ROLE in D2LThis role gives you access to your faculty’s classroom coursesand any online courses they are assigned to teach.You can view content in the courses but cannot edit, delete or changeanything.NOTE: It is best to leave your Role at All RolesB. Course titles in D2LStarting in September, course title in live shells will contain Subject code, catalog nbr, course title,online or blended information, Instructor name, and class nbr. You will be able to search on anyone of these features.Example:ICOM3310 – Technical Training (B) - Marc Scarfone 3808Note: To find your faculty’s course development shells, you may need to have faculty rename thecourse title to include these features or you can search by user rather than course title.Click “Search by User” for instruction on how to do this19

A COUPLE OF THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOWC. D2L Course End DateThe end date on the courses will be extended by 4 weeks so students do not lose access to theircourses on the last day of the semester.D. Student Email AddressA student’s NSCC email address will now come over to D2L. NOT their preferred email.20

AD HOC SECTION ASSOCIATIONS(formerly Combined Sections)Class Section 001What is an Ad Hoc Section Association?This functionality provides the ability to group class sectionstogether into one D2L Shell.Why Associate Sections?To manage content and learning more efficiently acrossmultiple sections of the same or similar course.SameSemesterClass Section 003Class Section 004What is the process to have Course Shellfor ACTG 1000Class Section 002SameCourseFaculty will complete the request form and send it to their Academic Chair. Academic Chair’s will review and if approvedsend the request to their Administrative Assistants to complete in PeopleSoft.Note: All Ad Hoc Section Associations must be completed inPeopleSoft before the 1st day of classes.21
