Let’s Celebrate! In the musical WICKED, during a dark period the good witch Glinda, speakingto her fellow Ozians, says, "Let us put aside our worries for this one day: andcelebrate!" Likewise, Beloit Meals On Wheels is appealing to you to celebrateand not just for a good times' sake. We are raising funds from the 2009 KickUp Your Heels for Meals On Wheels dance to reduce the uncertainty in ourclients' lives. Uncertainty of whether Mom or Dad is eating right. Uncertaintyof whether they will see another person that day. Uncertainty of whether theycan stay in their home. Amid bleak economic forecasts we remain optimistic that our program will be a bright spot in the lives of those we serve. Our "Celebration" this year happens Thursday, September 10th at 7 p.m.in the La Casa Grande banquet hall. With the support of our sponsors Culver's of Beloit, Blackhawk Bank, Paulette and Steve Christensen, andThrivent Financial, all the elements of another great event are falling intoplace. Challenges Await New BoardWow, as we begin our new year, what challengingtimes are ahead unemployment is up, long time businesses are being forced to close their doors and ourcommunity continues to struggle. Other communityservice organizations similar to ours have been forcedto make adjustments and cutbacks in their programsand offerings. How lucky & blessed are we to be ableto continue to provide the same personal, quality service that we have in the past. And it’s all because ofyou.“Thank You.” Thank you to those who have servedand retired, to those who continue to serve and to allwho support our program both in front of and behindthe scenes. We could not do it without you.On a personal note, I would like to thank DeloresMoore, retiring President. Her guidance and mentoringwill surely come in handy. I only hope to be able tocontinue the exceptional standard she has set by example.I look forward to working with our board and the community to meet these challenges together and continuethe Meals On Wheels great tradition of caring.Trina EhlersWe Have The PrescriptionFor Good Health!!With all of the current discussion regarding health care, it has beenestimated that 85% of older Americans have chronic diseases thatcould be helped by better nutrition. The Nutrition Screening Initiative, asserts that every 1 spent on home delivered meals saves 3.25 in health care costs. With that in mind, we’d like to share thefollowing message from the sister of a Beloit Meals On Wheelsrecipient.“I am so pleased to tell you that since my brother started Meals onWheels at the end of April, he has lost 20 pounds. This is so exciting tome. He is a severe diabetic and has many health issues and unfortunately, leads a very sedentary life.Meals on Wheels serves a wonderful variety of meals and cater to hishealth issues. He's really enjoying them. Thank you so much!”Norma J. FuchsIn MemoryWe extend our sympathy to the family ofMary Pickett, who recently passed away.Mary was a Beloit Meals On Wheelsvolunteer for more than 20 years, serving this program through herchurch, the River of Life MethodistChurch. Her dedication to this program continued even when her longtime delivery partner and neighbormoved away . She simply foundherself another partner! Then a littleover a year ago she found the needto discontinue her delivery. andshortly there after, began receivingmeals from the very program shehad been such a vital part of.Mary’s contributions to this programcontinue even with her passing, since she and her family chose tomake Beloit Meals On Wheels a recipient of her memorial contributions. We thank her caring familyand friends for honoring Mary’syears of service to this program withthis most thoughtful gesture, whichwill help to ensure that no seniorgoes hungry in this community. We also share our condolences withthe family of Tom Cook . Tom was aformer volunteer through the Stateline Golden K Club, and former Beloit Meals On Wheels board memberas well as President of the Board.Like his fellow club members, Tompromoted the mission of Kiwanis bychanging the world, and their community through service. This program is as successful todaybecause of the dedication of volunteers like Mary and Tom!

We Deliver Generations of Caring .At 86, Ed Watson figures he’s been delivering meal for more than 20 years. He joined his wife delivering after he retired and now delivers with fellow Evening Lion, Jack Walsh. Ed claims that volunteering isgood for his health and his heart. During his tenure, he has served as a board member for 6 years, culminatingas President of the board. Over the years, his family became aware of his involvement in the program, and thisyear he was quite proud to share that his grand daughter, Shannon Steskal, and great grand daughter, Maddie, are carrying on the tradition of serving in their hometown community of Schaumberg, inspired by Ed’sexample. Following are excerpts from a note sent to Ed, sharing their first experiences “on the road”:Hi Grandpa!I know mom told you Maddie and I started Meals on Wheels, but I wanted to email you the detailsmyself. Our coordinator is Sandy Werner and she is terrific. The route is in Schaumburg, not too farfrom Tutor Time. It’s super easy – takes about an hour (will be less now that we know what the heckwe’re doing!). We have 8 stops and 12 sets of meals. We deliver at lunchtime. Sandy went with uslast week but today we were on our own, which wouldn’t have been bad at all except I completely forgot my folder – with the route in it! And the number to call in case of emergency.I freaked out for about 30 seconds and then remembered the addresses are right on the meals.Whew! With our GPS and our memory, Maddie and I were able to piece together the route. We only mixed up the order at the very end, but it worked out. At some point webecame superheroes, pretending to fly through the air.We decided I was Meals-1 and Maddie was Wheels-2.We are happy to be helping people and extra happy to be continuinga tradition that you and Grandma started so long ago.Cheers,Shannon (& Maddie)
