In the beginning.Betty Feniak (Dr. Ellizabeth Feniak) dreamed of having a Canadian Home Economics Foundation. Iremember having coffee with her one morning in the Home Ec coffee room at the University of Manitoba when she convinced me to pursue the idea. (She can be very persuasive!) I left after having agreedto apply for a charitable tax number and to design some brochures to promote the idea. Things movedalong quickly once we got started. Our colleagues rose to the challenge and money was raised to startawarding grants for research and distribution of relevant information. It has been a joy to watch thesuccess of the foundation over the years. My gratitude goes to all the hard-working members of thecommittee who have kept up the good work.I may have been the first chair of the foundation, but the credit should go to Betty for pushing me along,to all the support of fellow committee members and the encouragement of our colleagues.M.E. (Peggy) Tyrchniewicz1st Chair of the Canadian Home Economics Foundation, 1980 – 1985CHEAF to CHEF from then to now, a Financial PerspectiveThe Canadian Home Economics Association (CHEA) looked after the Foundation donations in the earlyyears. The first donation recorded was on July 10, 1979 for 10 from Miss Jessie Stewart of Brandon,MB. From then to April 30, 1982 the total donations equalled 575, not an overwhelming beginning!!!During that time the donations ranged from 10 to 100 with most being 10, 25 or 50. The LondonHome Economics Association donated 100 as did Katherine Middleton from Chicago, Ill. In addition toBrandon, MB, donors were from Halifax, NS; Winnipeg, MB; Deloraine, MB; Toronto, ON; Oakville, ON;Don Mills, ON; St Thomas, ON and London, ON. Of special note in that list of donors are several whocontinue to be regular contributors today including Dr. Margaret Morton, May Maskow, Jennifer Welsh, and the Toronto Home Economics Association. On June 30, 1982 1,318.77 was transferred from Canadian Home Economics Association Foundation(CHEAF) Ottawa to a Winnipeg, MB bank account for the Executive to be responsible to administer. Aninvoice from the CHEAF auditor for 350 had prompted the transfer because, being true Winnipeggers,we felt we could have it done here for a more reasonable price. Several Home Economics Associationssent donations that year including BC, NB, SK, MB, Regina and Saskatoon. Also of note was a donation from Kellogg Salada Canada Inc. Dr. Elizabeth Feniak made our first 1,000 donation. A few othernames stand out to me as long time donors such as Marion Penhale, ON; Edith Cosens, ON; GailMarchessault, MB; Dianne Kieren, AB; Mary Price, NS; Isabelle Morrison, ON; Elizabeth Mullen, AB;Jean McHarg, QC and Dr. Patricia Hames, ON. In the next year the Edmonton Area Home EconomicsAssociation donated, followed by the Lethbridge and Nova Scotia Home Economics Associations. When reviewing the donors’ names in those first few years it’s very gratifying to see how many dedicated home economists donated then, and still do today. In all the years of writing the official donationreceipts my favourite address is Fiddlers Green Road; it just seems like it would be a pleasant place.Obvious examples of how things have changed are the expenses charged by the volunteer executivemembers. Postage has always been an item, but small amounts paid for typists and photocopyingwere common, plus the printing of our official receipts. None of us typed or had typewriters/computersthen.The first project supported by the Foundation in 1983 was 2,354 for the purchase and dubbing of public service announcements on radio and TV regarding children and nutrition. The funding was providedby CHEA and paid back by the Foundation over the next four years. It was endorsed by CHEA beforethe Foundation received legal charitable status. The next grant of 1,000 was made in 1984 to Sevenhuysen and Campbell, Faculty of Human Ecology, University of Manitoba for Review of requirements ofnutrition related micro-computer programs for educational purposes, plus 1,100 the followingyear to extend the project. The Dr. Elizabeth Feniak Award for Excellence in Technical Writing wasinitiated in 1986 and continues to this day. The first special funds were established in 1986/87 with memorial donations from the families of home economists Gwen E. Leslie, MB and Gwenyth Bailey Simpson, ON. The latter fund provided grants for the development of video tapes on foods topics to be usedin schools, libraries and other educational settings. The Foundation reproduced the tapes, marketedand sold them, using the profit to increase the amount of the fund. The first Gwen E. Leslie Memorial

Lecture award was made in 1989 and continued annually to the Canadian Home Economics Associationfor a speaker at their yearly conference.Efforts at constant fundraising by the executive and Home Economics associations across Canada assisted to increase the Foundation assets. Raffles, profits from special dinners and events, sales of foodcoupons, etc, were very common. A bonus for our new Foundation at the time was the interest rates. The investments made then were yielding anywhere from 8.75% to 11.25%. A far cry from what we canobtain today. In 1989 a grant of 1,000 was provided to support the research section of the CanadianHome Economics Journal and continued yearly until 1998, then 2,000 until 2,500 in 2003, the finalyear published.Several other special funds were initiated including the Margaret Speechly Stansfield fund in 1991, EdithRowles Simpson Recognition award and the International Development fund in 1995, a Tribute to Emmie Oddie in 1996, and the University of Saskatchewan Home Economics Teacher Education(USHETE) fund plus Home Economics-A Resource for Youth in 2003. Home economists in Saskatchewan have been very instrumental in fund raising and encouraging donations, plus have local committeesto select the grant recipients for the four funds they established including the Regina Home Economicsfor Living Project (HELP). Both the Edith Rowles Simpson and Emmie Oddie awards received substantial boosts to the fund amounts with memorial donations from family members in more recent years.2004 saw many changes to our by-laws with the dissolution of CHEA in December 2003 and CanadianHome Economics Association Foundation became Canadian Home Economics Foundation. At thesame time Industry Canada also approved our ability to offer financial support to post-secondary education and training. In 2018 the remaining funds of CHEA, 26,775, was received. The funds of the Nova Scotia Home Economics Association closure in 2005 created the Atlantic CanadaCommunity fund which has provided yearly grants decided by a local committee until the assets weredepleted this year. Also in 2005, CHE Foundation celebrated our 25th anniversary with the developmentof a web-site. In the following year the International Development fund was re-named the EngbergFewster International Development fund, following substantial involvement and funding from these twowomen. In 2013 new guidelines were developed for funding terms of reference for all projects posted onthe web-site.In 2014 the executive began the process of Continuance under the Not-for-Profit Corporations Act. Bylaws were amended to meet the Articles of Continuance and received notification of Continuance onAugust 7, 2014. In this same year the executive of Regina HELP transferred their funds to CHE Foundation and the first award was granted in 2015 based on the recommendations of the Regina committee. In the 2012-2013 year, the Doris Badir Leadership Development award was initiated by an Alberta groupof home economists and the first award provided in 2016. The Home Economics Resource for Youthwas renamed the Patricia J. Hames Resource for Youth award. She took out a life insurance policy inthe Foundations name in 1983, paying yearly tax deductible payments. Upon her passing CHE Foundation received the funds from her estate and designated them for this award. In 2017 the criteria for theGraduate Student award was updated to allow part-time students to apply, plus the number of awardswere increased from five 1,000 awards to eight 1,000 awards yearly. The
