CLERKSHIP GOALSDefinition: A goal is an outcome you intend to achieve, whereas an objective is an action that helps you achieve a goal.Note: In the following text, the terms “clerk,” “student,” and “medical student” are synonymous.OB/GYN Clerkship Goals Conduct a thorough history and physical exam in the OB/GYN setting. Perform direct patient care experience in both inpatientand ambulatory settings with emphasis on management of normal pregnancy and ambulatory gynecology and the surgicalinterventions associated with these conditions. Improve communication and interpersonal skills with patients, patient fam-ily members, residents, physicians, and othermembers of an interprofes-sional, interdisciplinary healthcare team. Develop professional behaviors necessary to be a practicing physician. Develop on awareness of the impact on health and well-being of psychosocial factors such as pregnancy wastage, sexuality,and domestic violence.Settings: The clinical settings include classroom activities, outpatient clinical patient exposure, the operating room, the recovery room,the intensive care unit and the wards. It is expected that the OB/GYN clerks will learn about the recognition of disease that aprimary care physician would learn to recognize, so that the appropriate consultation may be made.Expectations: The clerks are expected to log their patient encounters into One45. These will be printed by the coordinator on a weekly basisand reviewed by the director. The clerks are expected to be an integral part of the surgical team to which they have been assigned, they will report to theintern resident and follow them closely. The clerks must attend all post-graduate conferences and attend all didactic sessions that are provided for them. The clerks are expected to be professional, compassionate, and altruistic with an appropriate attitude, all of which arecarefully observed.The faculty will strive to achieve these goals in the following manner: Teach and model an approach to the evaluation and initial management of acute presentations commonly seen in OB/GYNpatients in the outpatient and inpatient settings. Provide instruction in historical assessment, communication, physical examination, and clinical reasoning skills as pertains toOB/GYN care and problem solving.At the end of the OB/GYN clerkship, each student should be able to: Effectively and competently evaluate a patient and produce a competent history and physical that facilitates differentialdiagnosis and the development of a treatment plan. Achieve the core basic knowledge that is considered necessary to the practice of medicine in OB/GYN patients. Begin developing through behaviors professionalism skills which will encourage the development of an enduring commitmentto the care of patients and the inter-and intra-professional team work this requires. Manage post-op, inpatient and outpatient visits with patients having one or more common OB/GYN processes.We will assess the student based on completion of curricular components, faculty appraisal, and standardized National Boardof Medical Examiners (NBME) testing.YEAR 3 OB/GYN CLERKSHIP CLASS OF 20222

LEARNING OBJECTIVESClinical Learning ObjectivesBy the end of the clerkship, OB/GYN clerks should be able to:I. OB/GYN Patient CareStudents must be able to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of healthproblems and the promotion of health. Student will:1. Become an integral part of the patient care team providing clinical care to the patient.2. Demonstrate skills for diagnosis and management of patients.3. Be directly observed by faculty members while performing of history and physical examination.4. Submit write-ups of the history and physical examination of new patients.5. Submit quality Progress notes.6. Perform the required procedure skills in the operating room, including suture skills.7. Participate in the bedside rounds with team residents and attendings.8. Give solid oral presentations.Demonstration of patient cares skills for diagnosis and management of patients is assessed by one or all of the following:faculty assessments of clinical work and the NBME surgery shelf exam.II. OB/GYN Medical KnowledgeStudents must demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and social-behavioralsciences, as well as the application of this knowledge to patient care. This includes the use of diagnostic imaging studiescommon to the practice of OB/GYN. Students will:1. Develop an in-depth knowledge of the diseases in patients who require OB/GYN care and evaluation.2. Approach clinical decision-making in an evidence-based, cost-conscious manner that utilizes the principles of obstetricsand gynecology.Demonstration of medical knowledge is through faculty assessments and NBME shelf examination.III.OB/GYN Practice-Based Learning and ImprovementStudents must demonstrate the ability to investigate and evaluate their care of patients, to appraise and assimilate scientificevidence. Students will:1. Access sources of information at the point of care and interpret and use this data in real time.2. Reflect on lessons learned from a patient seen for multiple visits.3. Practice self-directed learning.Demonstration of practice-based learning and improvement is through faculty assessments and NBME shelf examination.IV. OB/GYN Interpersonal and Communication SkillsStudents must demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information andcollaboration with patients, their families, and health professionals. Student will:1. Discuss the risk/benefit/nature of an operation with patients and families in the setting of informed consent.2. Communicate evidence-based treatment plans to patients, and when appropriate to the patient’s family.3. Communicate effectively with an interprofessional OB/GYN team.4. Participate in the transition of patient care, i.e. “sign out.”5. Communicate with consultants and nursing staff.6. Be able to have end-of-life discussions.7. Communicate effectively, using an interpreter when necessary, with patients of a different culture or language.8. Accurately present patient findings to a supervising physician.9. Accurately and completely chart patients. Use the SOAP format for current problems, problem list, medication list, and/orpost-op flow sheets.Demonstration of interprofessional and communication skills is assessed through faculty assessments.YEAR 3 OB/GYN CLERKSHIP CLASS OF 20223

Recognize own limitations and seek opportunities to learn and to grow.Demonstration of this goal is demonstrated by faculty assessment of adherence to ethical principles.Breaches of ethical or professional behavior are identified through reports from clerkship directors and faculty as well as otherclinicians and students. All breaches are reported to the dean of students and to the dean of the medical school. Formal actionsuch as a professionalism project, a letter of censure or expulsion is rare. Such decisions are made by the dean of the medicalschool in consultation with the Student Professionalism Committee.VI. OB/GYN Systems-Based PracticeStudents must demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of healthcare, as well as theability to call effectively on other resources in the system to provide optimal care. Students will:1. Identify and evaluate the psychosocial, cultural, familial and community influences that impact a person’s health.2. Make positive contributions to patient care by working collaboratively with office staff, community faculty, and patients.3.
