From Monsignor Fran CiliaWe resume the Sunday readings of Ordinary Time, which willcontinue this year until November 20.ParishMission StatementFounded in 1777,Saint Clare Parish isan ethnically diverseCatholic community offaith, united in worship, discipleship andservice. In welcomingimmigrants, newcomers and strangers, we“Ordinary” does not imply “regular” or “usual,” but an “ordered”presentation of the weeks, apart from the major seasons (Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter). That is why the Sundays are known by anumber, for example today is the Thirteenth Sunday in OrdinaryTime.During the 33 or 34 Sundays of Ordinary Time, we read the gospel(this year from Saint Luke) in order, chapter by chapter; we do thesame with the second reading, which usually comes from one of theletters of Saint Paul. The Old Testament reading, however, is chosenfor its connection with the gospel reading each Sunday. Often it isfrom the first reading that one can get a sense of what can beemphasized in the gospel reading.Today’s readings tell of the cost of discipleship: Elisha’s request thatElijah allow him to kiss his father and mother goodbye before hefollowed him is rejected. And Jesus declares that “No one who sets ahand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for thekingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). We, who want to be disciples of thesame Lord, need to consider its cost in our lives: what are we willingto give up? How committed are we to go where He leads us? As wewalk with the Lord these next five months, let us, as the song says,“see Him more clearly, love Him more dearly, follow Him morenearly. . .Day by Day” (from Godspell).strive to live the virtues of justice andlove, so as to be theface of Christ in theworld, becoming inHim a sign of unityand an instrument ofGod’s peace. Our New Church Roof: New Start DatePlease keep in mind that work on the new roof for the church isscheduled to begin on Monday, June 27. During this project, dailyMass (Monday through Friday) will be in the tent, to allow for oursafety.Book for IntentionsWe have placed a book in which you maywrite intentions to be held in prayer. Thebook will be place near the statue of SaintClare. All parishioners are invited to keep inour prayers the intentions included in thisbook.2

Eucharistic RenewalSaint Clare Parish will participate in the national program,“Eucharistic Revival,” to encourage us and all Catholics to deepen ourunderstanding and appreciation of the Eucharist, which began lastSunday, as we celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body andBlood of Christ (Corpus Christi). As Bishop Cantú announced in December 2021, the Diocese of SanJosé seeks spiritual renewal of our local church at all levels. TheEucharistic Revival is the heart of this renewal, which also includesthe 2023 Diocesan Synod to discern the direction of the mission andministry of the local church in Santa Clara County. Over the nextthree years, every Catholic parish, school, apostolate, and family areinvited to be a part of renewing the Church by enkindling a livingrelationship with the Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and going outin mission “for the life of the world.”Diocesan Prayer for Eucharistic RenewalHeavenly Father,In your loving mercy, you sent your Son, JesusChrist, anointed by the Spirit,to redeem the world through his PaschalMystery. The disciples on the road to Emmauspleaded with the Lord, “Stay with us.”Main Office Number(408) 248-7786Pastor/PárrocoMonsignor Francis V. Youth Ministry NewsCelebrate Independence Day with us at our YouthMinistry Session on July 3rd at 1:30pm.Please continue praying for our young people from our parish andall other parishes who will be heading off to Diocesan Youth Retreatthis coming Monday, June 27th. You can pray for our young peopleby name: TJ, Tomás, Giselle, Anthony, Nick, Reyes, Yareli,Alberto, and Diana.Creation Care TipsWe have just passed the summer solstice—the daywith the most daylight hours in the northernhemisphere—and we will continue to enjoy longhours of sunlight for weeks to come. This is theperfect time to test out a new invention which hasjust hit the market. It’s both ecological and economical. It replaces thedryer during the summer and is more gentle on clothing. It makesclothes smell fresh, like the outdoors. It’s called lateral garmentsuspension or more commonly known as “the clothesline.” Inaddition to the ecological aspects, hanging out your laundry is goodexercise for the arms, it’s relaxing, and it’s an opportunity to talk tothe neighbors. When it’s windy, the result is better than ironing. Lookfor a space to stretch a laundry line—something permanent orretractable—or get a simple, fold-up drying rack to set up in the sun.You may discover you enjoy the few quiet minutes of hanging laundryoutside and the fresh smell so much that you find a way to do it atother times throughout the year, not just when the summer days are attheir longest. Have you triedthat new ethnic restaurant which will introduce yourfamily to new flavors and textures of food? When youdecide on a restaurant, do you check to see if the restaurant useslocally-produced food instead of buying it from thousands of milesaway? Your challenge this week is to check out the restaurants in yourtown and then support those which provide healthy, farm-to-tableoptions which also care for God’s creation.
